I feel like the original Mario Party contributed to a lot of wear and tear.

Not sure how badly you had to treat the analog stick to cause it to flop.

Urban legend says they neglected to apply mechanical grease, possibly just in regions outside of Japan. I don't know if that's true or fake, but supposedly adding your own mechanical grease to the stick mechanism greatly reduces the rate at which the thing wears.

The first Mario Party had some minigames where you'd roll the stick around, some found that to win, they'd push the stick down with their palm and roll it around rapidly that way. This gives results in game, but for one it actually rubs your palm fricking raw, and in excess causes stigmata (there was actually class action lawsuit regarding this, yes, for real), the other is that it wears out the stick a lot faster. The following Mario Party games would not have such minigames, because the first one really did cause a lot of wear fast, even if you aren't palming it.

No I had heard about the gloves in Nintendo Power but I had sworn off Mario Party by that point.

I bought a new US controller and there was grease in the areas where the gears sit on top of the bowl, but none inside of the bowl itself. They did lubricate these, just not in the parts that needed it most. It appeared to be fairly good quality grease because with a well preserved controller it hadn't dried up.

Also even after buying a new controller and adding my own lubricant to the bowl it's still slowly but surely losing range and becoming looser. It's been about a year of general use (no Mario Party rotations) and it's definitely not as noticeably crisp as it used to feel, and the benchmark results back that up. Everything that was reading 84-86 is now in the 79-82 range. I expect this controller to last me a few more years (not in terms of becoming completely unusable, but in terms of becoming noticeably shit) but I'd be surprised if I get more than that out of it. For those of us that actually play quite a bit of N64 these controllers were just not built to last.

I was able to get a metal bowl from them for my N64 controller and it was a nice compromise, but I'm super mad I never got a whole steel stick.

They didn't. Just like how they thought to bottleneck the audio through the RSP than having an audio chip was a good idea

If barely any company does a through stress test of the crap they release today, imagine what it was like back then.

It was intentional for short term sales. Any engineer, hell any normal person that could see the interior parts grinding together without even any lube knows what's going to happen, especially with cheap, thin, shit plastic. Shit's like grinding metal on metal in a car except it costs them nothing and they'll get enough sales by then for most of the buying population to already be in too deep to bother getting out

take the stick apart and clean the dust out. Then apply super lube around the stick. Problem solved.

I'd be really fricking surprised if they tested the console for 15 years before releasing it
