main char would be some dumb gay (human ghoul or supermutant) main villain guy was a crazy scientist that would use the main char as FEV vector and his main goal was activate some sort of orbital weapon to destroy the wasteland and clean it of filth (why tf would he soread fev then)
the legion was more of a raider troup on steroids instead of being an actual proto empire no moral dillemas here either just moronic bad guys and NCR was the super good guys already in hoover dam when legion arrived
there were no 87 tribes or whatever the legion was not glorious and wouldnt erase the conquered tribes culture and it would have super mutant slaves on it.
the whole game had non-human liberation undertones
the caesar position would be granted to whomever could kill the rulling caesar
and the main antagonist to the legion was some woman from a tribe they destroyed that survived and went on to lead another faction and theor mission was basically to destroy the legion
            Also isometric shit

        >B-b-b-but the retconned the reason for the war!
Actually they didn't, they showed vaul tec considering dropping the bombs, but the fact that what's her name didn't make sure she had her daughter ready to go is either terrible writing, or significant proof that isn't what actually happened.

          Anonymous

There was heavy implication in the show that vault tec was interfering with peace talks to make them go sour.
Besides that, it takes two seconds to realize how moronic it would be for vault tec to want the bombs to fall, even without the daughter getting nuked the story has massive holes.

        >Any worse than retconning the destruction of the Enclave?
        Yes.
Why would the Enclave only have one fricking base, it made no sense. Giving them other bases allowed for them to continue as a faction, it added more than it took.
        >Any worse than completely retconning the modus operandi for the BoS?
        That never happened.
In Fallout 3 the BoS still believe the same things, but the elder of the DC chapter went rogue, started pursuing an agenda more based on benevolence.
Which was also logically explained by the fact that the east BoS marched from Cali to DC instead of staying in bunkers, so many had a change of heart and decided to slightly alter their mission.
Even then there's the Outcasts who obey the old ideals, and in Fallout 4 they changed back to the old ways (more or less)
        >Any worse than making [ghouls] fricking everywhere rather than a niche thing?
        That was a good change.
Ghouls are cool, they are an iconic part of the setting. To not use them, or to barely use them, because of some autistic dedication to throwaway lines from Fallout 1 would be moronic.

A lot of incredibly bad locations and ideas from the shitters no one had the heart to say were too stupid to work on fallout

        namely:

talking animals in general and talking deathclaws in specific
        constant low brow dated references

Not the anon you are talking to at all and it's been years since I played through the first 2 games, but I could've sworn a slight supernatural element was always present in the first game. Very subdued and not a prominent part of the setting, but still there. I personally liked the talking deathclaws because they weren't treated goofy or silly at all, and because the mental image of raiders being surprised when a large cloaked deformed man throws off his shroud to reveal he's a giant fricking lizard is cool as hell.

If you want a handwaved explanation you could say that besides the saturation bombing nuclear material was being used in all sectors to power machines as well as incredibly sloppy handling of toxic waste. Every charge and powerplant was running off nuclear power and ever game you can find several spots where it's barrels of leaking toxic waste. Besides the bombs there was already a lot of rads to go around.

The skeleton thing is moronic. You might assume that they died recently and were picked clean by the insects and bleached by rads but still leaving them lying around a living space is silly. I hope if we complain enough they will correct that next game.

It's an open world, FPS/RPG, with irradiated mutants, and different factions you can join.
The main point of contention would be that it's not TECHNICALLY post apocalyptic. It's only post apocalyptic inside of the Zone.
It could just as easily be repackaged as an end of the world scenario, which would give you Metro.

It's pre apocalyptic, the Zone is infinitely expanding outwards and nobody has even the slightest clue how to stop this. That's part of the melancholic mood of the games, the knowledge that the desolation you see will inevitably cover the entire Earth.

You don't need to be sarcastic, I know they mishandled the series later (even the Van Buren plot sounds silly) but that doesn't change that the core feeling of the original game is totally lost in the show.

Is that even that bad? It's just a more action focused spin-off that was aimed at consoles, like that one Balder's Gate game. It's not like they called it Fallout 3.

Eh, BoS does deserve some shit. I think people were upset because it percisely was consolized. As in, why'd you cancel Van Buren in favor of this? But with gaming culture in the early 2000s it's kind of understandable. Fallout 1 was already semi-outdated when you had Diablo show off it's fancy real time combat and Baldur's Gate being a thing one year later. No one wanted isometric CRPGs in the era of the PS2. The other half of why it left a bad taste was because of how off it was in tone, even more than Bethesda Fallout. Why is there metal music and Bawls in my Fallout game? People felt similar about MechAssault compared to MechWarrior.

It's the Fallout 4 show, it doesn't even share much resemblance with Fallout 3 or New Vegas, and sure as hell doesn't resemble the isometrics in tone or aesthetic. But at the same time, it feels like it is smugly trying to subvert Fallout 4 completely unaware that it is treading on ground previous Fallouts already staked out. I half expect the big twist moment in season 2 to be that "Vault-Tec didn't start the war, it was a frick up, and it doesn't matter anymore because we've all moved on" while being completely unaware that this has been the status quo since Fallout 1.

I think the bare minimum is ensuring continuity to respect the older titles in the universe. Not everything has to be the exact same, but a new installment can't completely break the previous one. Something like power armor jetpack arms is unlikely to break anything narratively, but with Shady Sands' new location, you'd have to rewrite the first game for it to make sense. We'll just have to assume the original Shady Sands was compromised somehow and the inhabitants moved to LA.

You guys are gays and don't understand subtext. Yeah lots of people on the surface are le wacky nutjobs. It does a great job of illustrating how desensitized everyone is to the fricked up excuse for society that exists in the wasteland. Lucy is meant to be the foil to all the degenerates on the surface who are killing each other, and she says almost every episode how bad the wasteland is. Many people criticizing the tone of the show lack an understanding of just how deep human coping mechanisms can be. A military vet who's seen his best friends face peeled off by shrapnel could be the goofiest motherfricker you've ever met. This isn't an anime where a character's every thought is spelled out for you, it shows the mildest amount of respect for the viewer by making them use their fricking brain.
A good example is the squire who gets his foot fricked up. He knows he'll die if it's not treated so he takes a big risk letting the chicken fricker treat him, while playing his negotiation intelligently the entire time. His positive reaction to his foot suddenly mending is understandable because weird, unexplainable shit is normal in the wasteland, and he's not going to fricking die. He even knows not to piss off the fiddler radio dj because the guy is clearly unhinged. I could go on, but my point is that he acts intelligently without acting unrealistically, despite being somewhat silly.

To add to this, you've chosen the most surface level detail to criticize when my original post was addressing the tone of the show. Yeah using teeth as ammo is moronic but so is using bottlecaps for money and drinking 200+ year old cola.

                Anonymous

The "they aren't moronic, they are just coping" subtext argument is undermined by instances where they actually are just moronic. And these instances build the tone of the series, when they have knock-off Beavis and Butthead running an organ harvesting operation, it undermines the tone. When they have a group called "the Govermint", it undermines the tone. When people are buying teeth or loading them into shells for whatever reason, it undermines the tone.

                Anonymous

I realize now I probably wasn't clear in my original post. I meant to address people's problem with the "marvelization" of the show, and the perceived lightheartedness of the tone. I don't believe they're using humor as a coping mechanism. I also don't believe the examples you gave contradict anything.
Two crackheads running a fully automated ghoul organ harvesting operation falls comfortably within the scope of what you'd find in one of the games, and illustrates how bad things on the surface really are, especially to somebody new to the setting. As for the "Govermint", it supports the bleakness of things by showing how any moron with enough power can fill a vacuum. It was clearly a purposeful decision to put the ghoul there, because he's the only character who remembers how the world used to work. The decision to call it the "Govermint" along with the fat morons decision to call himself the "president", along with the organ harvesting operation being a sanctioned business under the "Govermint" were made to show how far society has fallen, along with morality. Yes it's moronic. That's the point.
Also, selling teeth is not even stupid. People have been making dentures out of human teeth since dentures were invented.

Didn't F1 do extremely well for a PC RPG? That's why F2 got rushed so hard to capitalize on the sudden success. I don't think F2 did bad numbers either as Tictacs came not long after. The problem wasn't so much that people weren't interested in Fallout as much as Interplay being moronic and shooting themselves in the foot. I could see Interplay panicking during the early 2000s though and why they went with BoS over Van Buren.

Yeah but Baldurs Gate was the Half Life of CRPGs. Fallout 1 and 2 were more like Unreal. It's not top dog but not a failure either.

Bro, that's like saying that Tom Brady isn't rich because Jeff Bezos is worth 200 billion. You are talking about one of the most successful CRPG's of all time and putting it against something that was decently successful.

      >Fallout 2 was a commercial success.[28] In the United States, it secured third place on PC Data's computer game sales rankings for the first week of November 1998. It was absent from the weekly top 10 by the following week, but debuted at #20 for the month of November overall.[29][30] Fallout 2 sold 123,000 copies in the United States by March 2000. GameSpot writer Desslock considered these "very good sales, especially since the overall [worldwide] figures are likely double those amounts."[28] According to Keza MacDonald of Eurogamer, Fallout 2 was unsuccessful in the United Kingdom; she noted that the game and its predecessor totaled just over 50,000 sales combined in the region.[31]

Can someone explain to me why they went balls deep into the Native American motif for FO2? FO1 didn't have any of that, and the tribal thing isn't explained.

They wanted to go for that sort of cyclical history thing alot of post-apoc fiction goes for, I wish they hadn't gone full native though, or at least made the natives more interesting.

          you didn't play the game.

boulder city was leveled by C4 in a strategic gambit to stop joshua graham's offensive during the first battle of hoover dam. the only things left in the town are the saloon (which is empty except for the proprietor), the train station, and the concrete mixing yard. what few people remained abandoned the settlement when the deathclaw infestation at the quarry caused limestone shipments to dry up.
why would people stick around an abandoned pile of rubble with no work when Novac, Freeside, and the interstate trading post are right down the road? the saloon owner is the only one with any reason to stay.

you're thinking too much about that location. it's not meant to be thought about. you're not supposed to ask why this place has a massive supply of nondescript "vials". you're not supposed to ask whether these vials are used on the ghouls in fridges to make them regenerate body parts. you're not supposed to ask why it's operated by two dumb, fat stoners watching cartoons. you're not supposed to ask why this place hasn't been raided if its only defense is two morons and a mr. handy. you're not supposed to ask who is buying these organs or why.

you're supposed to see that this is a cartoonishly evil organ harvesting operation being run out of a thing you recognize (super duper mart) with a thing you recognize (mr. handy) and being run by bad, dumb people. because it's evil and bad and the wasteland is filled with evil, bad, dumb people.
      and it advances the plot.

shut up stop thinking about it you're supposed to care about the plot, not the world. care about the plot. do you think vault-tec dropped the bomb? how do you think moldaver survived the great war? what do you think happened in vault 32? what do you think's going to happen in vault 31? why did hank go to new vegas? what's the brotherhood going to do with the infinite energy macguffin that the enclave also has? what's the enclave going to do? do you think the enclave was behind vault-tec's evil plan? wouldn't that be crazy, and totally like the games? do you think house had a super secret plan because he didn't have a moronic idea for an evil vault and looked mildly disinterested for a second at the secret vault-tec meeting?

i can't wait for season 2 to answer all these questions and more.

      >retread of Fallout 3's and 4's plots
      >worldbuilding is so bad that it makes Fallout 3 look like a work of art
      >the wasteland is empty and bland
      >weak dialogue
      >frantic pacing because they only had episodes to resolve 5 different sub-plots (Lucy, Maximus, the ghoul, Norm, and pre-war Cooper)
      >Moldaver is an awful antagonist
      >just kidding, she's an antihero
      >every episode is predicated on extremely convenient coincidences that allow the characters' sub-plots to intersect
      >plot is overly reliant on subversive, unresolved intrigue
It's carried by Goggins and how appealing the basic premise of Fallout is. And of course it accurately mimics the iconography of Fallout, so it's actually a "love letter to the franchise".

Don't get me wrong, I think I'd enjoy it in a vacuum as, like, a promising 7/10. But the show doesn't exist in a vacuum, because it's set on the West Coast and Bethesda decided it's canon, so you have to view it in that context.

It's bizarre how Ganker usually obsessed with specific developers, but in the case of the Fallout show, people are perfectly content to have blind faith in it despite who's writing and producing it.

If you are going to invest a hundred mill into something, you want to give that budget to people who have proven they aren't going to dumpster it. It doesn't matter that Amazon have the GDP of a small country, you don't get that big by being stupid and risky with your money. The problem with films and TV is that it's a vicious self-feeding cycle because in order to do almost anything, you need a team of people and a decent amount of money to spend on it. Or, you can do ultra-low budget indie stuff and hope you get noticed by someone who matters to the industry, which 99% of people don't. Kevin Smith said it best when comparing people who want to make films to other creative interests, basically saying "all I need to pursue my dream is 100 people and a million dollars." There's loads of people doing good stuff outside of mainstream, but you'll never hear about them unless you happen across them through word of mouth.

So yes, just like every other form of mainstream entertainment it's normie and cringe and reddit and whatever the the frick other cope buzzwords you want to call it, but it's successful.

      >misunderstand the NCR completely, saying it's "doing everything great" and that's why it had to be written out of the setting
i'm not even counting ghouls needing "vials", because i'm sure it'll be some backwards-ass plot twist. of course, the show had to be set in LA so that the show's wasteland could feature such thrilling locations as
      >a town based around an atomic b- i mean, landfill
      >vault, vault, and vault
      >another vault
      >a brotherhood base
      >a mysterious enclave research base that we know nothing about
      >super duper mart
      >empty ruins
      >empty desert
      >empty forest (?)
      >empty lake in empty forest (???)
      >house in the middle of nowhere belonging to a guy in a diaper trying to drink sand
      >the gas station from fallout 4 which was obviously shot across the fricking country for some reason
the most interesting location in the show is the dusty shack where 3 dumb hicks are LARPing as the government, and that's a pretty low level of worldbuilding / intrigue consider they exist purely to get shit on by Goggins.

the Boneyard in Fallout 1, which is 4 screens, has as much going on in it as the entire LA Wasteland in the show does.
