How did this ever become so popular?

>turn-based combat without anything to make it stick out or actually fun
>random encounters
>almost no level design or interactivity
>writing and worldbuilding is insulting:
>"These sectors ones had names, but the people forgot what they were" (literally impossible to happen)
>"Cloud, we need you to save the world!" "How is this my problem?"
>those graphics
Was it really just the CGI cutscenes?

the music and story is good. You didn't even beat the game since you're interpreting Cloud's personality off the first 2.5% of the game's runtime. ywnbaw retard

because FF7 is about broz. I don't just mean with an a, but with a z as well. It's one of the only JRPG's in existence that doesn't have a JRPG story; you don't play as some gay high schooler, you're not on a quest to kill God, it isn't retarded anime fuckshit, and Cloud is an actual character unlike the useless blank slate chosen ones in every other JRPG.

For many this was babbys first JRPG but it also skips a lot of gay ass JRPG tropes like aping shonen anime garbage where you're some kinda chosen one 16 year old who saves the world with friendship and love and shit.
This is a game where bad shit happens. The intro sequence is a fucking terrorist attack. Cities get destroyed, natural disasters (weapons) happen, there is constant threat to the wellbeing of humanity and earth. Sprinkle in a main character death and a twist about who the main char is, and you have a solid adventure.

literally the exact plot of the game. Even down to a scene as soon as you leave Midgar where the entire party all talks about how they need to all band together to take down sephiroth. Absolutely nothing about this game was anything more than generic jrpg, it was just the first time most anyone has played one.

            >literally the exact plot of the game
Literally not. Cloud has to become a real bro, he isn't actually a le badass epic "heh nothing personnel kiddo" sigma anime edgelord, he's actually a loser retard hillbilly. He isn't the chosen one, if anything Sephiroth is, and he still loses

Cloud being a brain damaged schizo isn't the plot of the game, it's a characterization and very badly done to the point it makes multiple other characters in the game act retarded.

              >A group of rebels and terrorists decide its best to work together to take down an organization trying to destroy earth
              >A band of teenage friends use the power of love and friendship to triumph over evil forces because love is what the villains lack
There is a difference between these two things.

Sephiroth has literally nothing to do with Shinra. The entire game after Midgar has nothing to do with saving the planet. It's a generic jrpg where half the cast abandons their motives and goals to kill the epic bad guy who personally wronged the main character.

No, it's literally not. Not a single thing in the game would change if Cloud actually was an elite army soldier. He acts, fights, and has the military knowledge of one anyway, and all of the mind control bullshit has nothing to do with it. It was a thrown in and badly done plot twist for the sake of one, which is common in anime storylines.
                >He's the consequence of Shinra's interest in the ancients and Promised Land...
Awesome. Why should anyone in Avalanche besides Cloud or Tifa care? Why should Red? Why does Yuffie even exist? Aeries was such a shitty character that they couldn't even write her a motive to get caught up in everything in Midgar besides "I wanna go too." The most relevant plot character in the entire game is a vampire who's only in the game as an anime character homage.

You are intensely analysing this shit and failing to grasp what any non-retard would automatically parse passively. Cloud's mental health affects his dealings with the other characters you fucking spastic cunt, holy shit. Cloud has chemistry with Aerith in the first place because he is LARP'ing as her dead boyfriend. Tifa is scared because Cloud has changed
                >Why should anyone in avalanche care

                >Yeah why should anybody care that a psycho is let loose to kill the people they're trying to save
Barrett was trying to save the head of Shinra? The man he started an underground terrorist ring to stop? Because that's the only person who actually got killed and apparently justified the band getting together to take down Sephiroth.

                >Do you mean why Tifa letting Cloud blatantly lie
As far as Tifa knows, Cloud wasn't there during the Nibelheim incident, yet he remembers it. How can Tifa be sure Cloud is the crazy one and not her? Shinra did cover up the Nibelheim incident, so Cloud and Tifa are equally stumped when they revisit town. What the fuck is Tifa meant to think? What right does she have to call Cloud crazy? How and why would she even bring it up? She has mediocre social skills (esp. compared to Aerith) and is content with Cloud being back
                >Cloud does everything exactly like a top level army member

Aeris being an ancient or even explaining what that is isn't brought up for another 15 hours of gametime. Sephiorth is a great risk to the planet because he, uh... kills everyone involved in the company destroying it.

                >World explodes

                >Jenovaroth and the simps manage fail to get the Black Materia
                >With no other fail safe, Sephi's forever entombed atop the North Crater
                tl;dr You suck at this.

                >Zach and Cloud were on his way to Midgar anyway this is literally how he got there to begin with
                >why would he not meet Aeris?
                >why would he not go after the person who almost killed him?

                >Tifa
                >You weren't here. Cloud did not come to Nibelheim five years ago

While she doesn't specify what the terrible thing she's talking about was she does say that she kept her mouth shut out of fear that something awful would happen if she did spoke up. So there is a reason. Furthermore her initial assessment was that she wasn't sure if it was her Cloud or an imposter. Again quoted from the game

"You told me a lot about what happened after you left Nibelheim...
                But...
...Something's wrong. I felt there was something strange about the things you talked about.
All the things you didn't know that you should, And other things you shouldn't know that you did...
                I wanted to make sure...
But then I heard... you were going far away...
                And I didn't want that...
...I didn't know what to do. So, I thought I needed more time.
And that's why I told you about the AVALANCHE job. I wanted to be with you, watch you."

Tifa wasn't certain until the second trip to Gold Saucer at which point she knew this was her Cloud only that something was wrong with him and he needed to be protected. Which goes into her character of being indecisive which yet again, quote

                "Tifa
......I didn't know what to do. I was always like that..."

I mean her name is literally Lockhart. She locks her feelings away and just doesn't talk about them. That's why she will sit in a corner and silently listen as Cait Sith gushes about how perfect Aeris and Cloud are for each other.

Yes it does. Because Cloud whole story is about learning to accept himself. In the memories Cloud talks about his inferiority and how he kept trying to act tougher than what he actually was. He keeps trying to pretend to be literally anyone other than who he is. He left town because he wanted to be like Sephiroth. He spends the majority of the game pretending to be Zack. By the end he admits that it was his own weakness of character that put him in the position he was in. Give me a minute and I'll pull the quote.

The thing is though the way Cloud sees himself and the way he is are two different things. Because he did all of this wanting to impress Tifa but Tifa never needed any of that shit. All Tifa wanted was someone to be there for her when she needed him most. Which Cloud was the only one to chase her into the mountains in her grief. Granted it was a stupid thing to do and Cloud was blamed for her injury but he was there for her. And was there for her when she was injured at the reactor. And he avenged her father for her when she couldn't. CLOUD KILLED SEPHIROTH. He has the biggest dick in this game but the only person who doesn't believe in Cloud is Cloud himself. That's why the soldier thing is necessary for his story. The soldier thing is the biggest hill of bullshit that he needs to get over before he can be what he was always meant to be.

                >But weak people...... like me, get lost in the whole thing.
                >The combination of Jenova cells, Sephiroth's strong will, and my own weakness are what created me.
                >Everyone knew that. I'm...... Cloud.

And you can replace all of that by him just actually being in soldier and believing in himself. but then you don't get a gay anime plot twist that makes no sense thematically or otherwise.
What part of this do you not understand, he always acts like he's in fucking soldier. he's never weak, he's never wrong about military strategy, combat, anything like that, he's never self conscious, he never doubts his abilities, he's never not the perfect uber soldier he's made out to be. I don't know what you're talking about but that's not about Cloud. For starters the military strategy is entirely irrelevant. Barrett comes up with the strategies for the first quarter of the game. And for the rest of the game it's just tracking sephiroth across the world. Secondly, not self conscious? Doesn't doubt his abilities?

                >Barret
                >Hey! Why are you still sittin' around?

                >Tifa

                >Cloud
                >No.
                >I might lose it again.
                >If Sephiroth comes near me
                >I might......

                >Barret
                >Yeah, godammit! It's 'cuz of you that Sephiroth got the Black Materia in the first place. It's your damn fault!

                >Cloud
                >My fault?

                >Barret
                >I know you got problems... hell, we all do. But you don't even understand yourself.

At this point I need to question whether or not you played the game at all because this is a pretty gigantic part at the tail end of disc 1. Because right now it sounds like you're talking about a character that doesn't exist or a different character entirely.

Because that's not a strategy. That's going from a to b. Cloud says I want to change sephiroth. It's Barrett who says to reup at Kalm before pushing to Junon. At Junon it's Priscilla who broached the idea of using the wiring to get to the upper level without using the elevator. And it's Hojo that tells Cloud and co to go to Nibelheim to actually find Sephiroth. Cloud himself very rarely comes up with any ideas. The only one is to meet at Gold Saucer to regroup. And that's just before his mental breakdown. Unless you have an example of others.

Also Jenova doesn't make you "self conscious" or "doubt your abilities." So I'm wondering how you connected that to the mind control?

                [...]
Well you certainly can't spell "lost" without LT. Maybe Cloud has the spirit of an O-1

He acts like a big shot soldier with expert military advice and knowledge from the opening of the fucking game. You are the most disingenuous fuckwad I have seen in months.
                >So I'm wondering how you connected that to the mind control?
Because the fucking line you're quoting as him being insecure is him not wanting to be mind controlled again you autistic fuck.

So you want another anime plot instead of a story about coping mechanisms?

The entire fucking plot point IS a stupid stupid anime storyline. He overcomes his issues by giving up and being reduced by his lover and friends and realizing he was strong all along. It's token fucking anime bullshit. Cecil in the same series has a better told redemption/self realization arc

Yep you really can't read the room. You missed my sarcasm (where the other anon didn't), so let me rephrase in a way that your autistic brain will understand: Cloud, Zack, Sephiroth and other members of SOLDIER are infantrymen; they're not generals. Their jurisdiction is to take orders and do it well.
                >He acts like a
He acts like a hyperefficient badass soldier. Calling the shots isn't his business especially if he's not being paid for it
                >IS a stupid stupid anime storyline
No, because Cloud has to drop the anime act. Cloud doesn't overcome his issues when he gives up lol, when he gives up he lets Sephiroth call on fucking Meteor. Cloud then wallows in his mental breakdown until Tifa shows him another perspective ie helps him find the truth

main character is defeated by overwhelmingly power entity, gives up, is eventually saved by loved ones and friends who tell him he was strong all along and to believe in himself. They then, with the power of love and friendship, overcome the evil.
This is token anime storytelling 101. This is the exact type of sterotypical retarded anime bullshit to the point the original post I responded to was praising the game for not being like this. You are fucking retarded.

You're kidding right? You mean to tell me someone acting with bravado that don't actually have is a foreign concept to you? Also if you're issue is the moment that kind is said let's do what Tifa does and go back further

                >Young Cloud
                >I used to think... they were all stupid.

                >Tifa
                >What!?

                >Young Cloud
                >You were all childish, laughing at every little stupid thing.

                >Tifa
                >But we were children, back then.

                >Young Cloud
                >...I know. I'm the one that was stupid.
                >I really wanted to play with everyone, but I was never allowed into the group.
                >Then later... I began to think I was different...
                >That I was different from those immature kids.
                >That then... maybe...

                >Just maybe, they would invite me in.
                >I thought that might happen, so I hung around...

                >Young Cloud
                >I was so prejudiced. And... weak.

You are wrong. Completely and unequivocally wrong. Self doubt and coping was baked into his character from the jump and Chad Cloud needed to be established so it could be subverted later. Operating under the assumption that you have played this game before the only guess I can make is that you wanted Chad Cloud to be the real Cloud and got upset when it wasn't. I'm not going to point fingers at taste but what I will say is that your argument isn't supported by anything. Even Aeris says during the date scene that something was underneath the surface though she doesn't know what it is

                >Aeris

Not reading any of the rest of your bullshit after this. It's never hinted this isn't his real personality, never alluded to, never cast doubt on. You are desperately desperately trying to walk back on the fact you literally agreed with me and made my point for me that it's a worthless plot twist. Main character is defeated by the realisation he isn't a le epic badass, has a mental breakdown afterwards. If course, you have consistently displayed a sociopathic lack of ability to read the room, so it is understandable that you cannot identify the story as being about Cloud's mental health
                >It's never hinted that this isn't his real personality
He has a fucking voice of Chad in his head giving him guidance as early as the bombing missions the game opens up with. Throughout the game, Tifa comes off as sceptical of certain things Cloud says. Aerith knows during the date that Cloud is bullshitting. I could write more but you are just retarded

What's really funny is that Cloud's inner voice actually calls attention to the plothole in his own story

                >...That reminds me.

                >5 Years ago... Nibelheim?

                >When you went to Mt. Nibel then, Tifa was your guide, right?

                >Cloud
                >Yeah... I was surprised.

                >But where was Tifa other than that?

                >Cloud
                >...I dunno.

                >It was a great chance for you two to see each other again.

                >Cloud
                >...You're right.

                >Why couldn't you see each other alone?

                >Cloud
                >...I don't know. I can't remember clearly...

                >Why don't you try asking Tifa?

                >Cloud
                >...Yeah.

This is why I don't think he's actually played this game. Or at best it's been a long time since he played. Either way I don't think he knows enough about it to comment on it

I mean I can see why people called Cloud mopey but it's also the first exposure to peacetime in 7 years. Nearly a decade of trauma, mind control, death, monsters, and a literal apocalypse. And it's fine when you have something to focus on but it's different when you have to just sit with it in silence. You can't just bludgeon cancer to death with a sword either so I can see why Cloud would feel like shit even though I'm not really a fan of AC

Oh and by the by, it's Barrett, Aeris, or Tifa depending on party comp who comes up with the idea to buy everyone cellphones to stay in contact. Not Cloud. So naturally I'm extraordinarily curious where this idea of Cloud being the team tactician came from

                >And you can replace all of that by him just actually being in soldier and believing in himself

                >he's never weak
What happened right before Cloud fell into the church?
                >he's never wrong about military strategy
When is he ever right about military strategy?

I don't know what you're talking about but that's not about Cloud. For starters the military strategy is entirely irrelevant. Barrett comes up with the strategies for the first quarter of the game. And for the rest of the game it's just tracking sephiroth across the world. Secondly, not self conscious? Doesn't doubt his abilities?

                >Barret
                >Hey! Why are you still sittin' around?

                >I might......

                >Barret
                >Yeah, godammit! It's 'cuz of you that Sephiroth got the Black Materia in the first place. It's your damn fault!

                >Cloud

                >Barret
                >I know you got problems... hell, we all do. But you don't even understand yourself.

At this point I need to question whether or not you played the game at all because this is a pretty gigantic part at the tail end of disc 1. Because right now it sounds like you're talking about a character that doesn't exist or a different character entirely.

No he's played the game, he's just a retard who can't read the room. He's the same sort of fuckwit who googles "ending explained" after watching a movie. You can't even say he's arguing in bad faith, his faith is just retarded

No you'd be telling a perfectly fine story about someone overcoming childhood insecurities, and becoming a strong, and skilled fighter to protect and eventually due to circumstance avenge his friends and family. What would not get in this scenario, and the only reason this stupid plot twist is actually in the game is Cloud being rescued by his love interest, and overcoming his problems due to the power of love and friendship.

Not even him but the fact that most characters dont play heavily in the plot is probably the most relevant criticism of the games story. Dont see why you need to be so hostile. Even near release people were complaining about that on forums since its one of the biggest things FF6 handled much better: obviously not every character in FF6 is plot relevant but you could easily say that game has like 7-9 main playable characters. FF7 the entire story revolves around Cloud, with everyone else being a side subplot at best.

This, and the commercials. FF7 was probably the most heavily marketed RPG in the US at that point. I had a friend who was big into sports and racing games who wouldn't even look at FF6. Imagine my surprise when I found he owned a copy of FF7, and was already working on getting a Gold Chocobo.
I really think the strong sci-fi/modern era looks of FF7 helped it sell to people who usually avoided standard fantasy RPGs.

3D graphics too. Dont forget that. At the time these CGI cutscenes were mind blowing as funny as it is to think of now. This was when Toy Story was the only Pixar movie released, while FF7's didn't look aa good as that there really was almost nothing else with fully rendered CGI around at the time. It was important enough to have that Square needed 3 discs just to fit them.

This games popularity is mostly revisionism. 70% of it's sales were foreign market, and it was the most returned video game of all time because it was sold entirely on CGI cutscenes with 0 gameplay footage. It also had 0 cultural impact. It got far more popular in the late 90s and early 2000s when anime really took off.
People now like to pretend it was a staple of the PS1, and something that shifted the tides, but that's only true in Japan.

In Japan. In the US they sold as much as Croc or Frogger, neither of which are praised or remembered. The adulation the FF series and jrpgs as a whole during this era gets is almost entirely weeb revisionism.

I never said it didn't. I said the notion it was a landmark title or a flagship of the system is revisionism. FF titles sold incredibly well for jrpgs, but that's the only metric they were successful on.
Tomb Raider, Tony Hawk, MGS, Tekken, Crash, Spyro, Medal of Honor, Driver, Twisted Metal, etc all much bigger series in the west at the time.

Posts like these are fucking pathetic. The "gameplay" in dogshit like FF7 is literally a joke and it couldnt possibly entertain anyone except a mentally retarded toddler who cant handle real videogames yet, the only thing that props up the "game" is the audiovisual side and the story, and the final fantasy pajeets always fold like wet shitty towels the second you start to actually pick the story apart by the standards of literally anything or anyone that isnt an illiterate preschooler

    >turn-based combat without anything to make it stick out or actually fun
    >random encounters
    >almost no level design or interactivity
A lot of people who played it probably hadn't played many RPGs before so the gameplay would've felt novel in spite of being pretty poorly thought out and tedious. I find most turn-based JRPGs really boring now but the gameplay never bothered me when I was a teenager. Also the materia system is still kinda cool. On top of that I think the designers knew the core gameplay was kinda shit because they don't actually subject you to it for extended periods too often. It gets broken up a lot by mini-games, puzzles and shifts in gameplay like wall market being basically a point-and-click adventure game. That's not ideal compared to just fixing the core gameplay but it definitely helps the game to feel like less of a slog. And then of course the music, aesthetics, story and cutscenes pick up the slack.

    >>"These sectors ones had names, but the people forgot what they were" (literally impossible to happen)
It's such a throwaway line you've gotta be autistic for it to significantly affect your enjoyment of the game one way or the other.

    >>"Cloud, we need you to save the world!" "How is this my problem?"
He doesn't even act like this for most of the Midgar section, he becomes a total simp for Aeris once he meets her and starts doing unambiguously heroic shit.

      >a total simp for Aeris once he meets her and starts doing unambiguously heroic shit
How is this different than before. The aloof Cloud was always an act and always antithetical to his true self. The only difference between how he behaved with Tifa and how he behaved with Aeris is the excuse given. But he never calls out Tifa for the 3000 Gil she and Barrett owed him for the second Reactor mission and he never calls it Aeris for the date she owed him for the escort. Because Cloud himself never actually cared

There's a town near here where the people who live there don't know its real name. The corrupted slang version has been in use for hundreds of years and it's become THE name so much that it's printed on the maps, in the address databases, etc. If you go digging in official records you'll find the original name so it's not lost, but forgotten? Yes, very much so when only weirdos like me with a penchant for trivia can name it.

It's like that everywhere. There are no named nations anywhere in the world. Nibelheim got memory holed into oblivion. No one besides two people know that the entire town burned down 5 years ago. Did you know that the the Northern Continent has a name? It's not fucking Icicle Area. It's called Knowlespole. Ifalna was the only one who knew because the voices of the planet told her. Speaking of the voices of the planet isn't it nice and convenient how the name Lifestream conveys the purpose of the river of life that flows throughout the planet. Well you'd be one of the very few who do because no one calls it that. It's Mako now and that corporate brand makes it easy to rationalize the fact that Shinra makes its money on the literal souls of the dead. Because the concept of culture and memory has been totally destroyed by Shinra.

Yuffie is treated as a petulant child for her goal of wanting to free Wutai but you can bet your ass that Wutai will have lost its name too in 3 generations. Hell the war ended 7 years ago and the once proud nation is now a tourist trap. The leader sits in his Pagoda drunk off his ass nowadays. He's as castrated as Mayor Domino is now. Fucking Don Corneo had been spending his time kidnapping women so he can tie them to Wutai's mountain so he can fuck then upside down on the face of Wutai's ancestors. History in FF7's world is fucked

I played it for a few hours years ago, took a break and ended up forgetting about it entirely and not playing it again.

It's not that I didn't like it. I've done this before with other games that I liked such as Okami. I just get burned out if a game takes too many days to finish and I'm slow paced in these games because I try to pay attention to everything.

    I'm gonna play it again.
