If you're past the Prison Island/Valek Mountain stage of the game and you are still checked out, then yeah you are fricked. I don't imagine 2 would be much better for you.

Sharla, yes but she is the only boring character
Melia is a late-game character you need more skills and arts on her to fully use her
You should try Dunban especially, Reyn and Riki

Assuming you aren't kidding about the only playing as Shulk thing, I would recommend switching up your party a lot more. The game is simple enough that you shouldn't be punished too hard for trying different sets of 3.

And just getting to Prison Island, I think you are past the most boring parts of the game already story-wise. Maybe keep going.

Overall though, the singleplayer MMO style combat that Xenoblade uses definitely isn't for everyone.

put on casual mode and breeze through the story, the sidequests aren't really worth it anyway unless you care about building a proper endgame party.
tip: put "aura heal" gems on shulk, merely opening the monado menu counts as aura so you can heal on command. put sharla and riki in your team and you'll be immortal for those battles you can't easiy power through

Swap up builds and try different characters. Only time playing as Shulk is necessary is if you are against tough mechon, or some enemy that requires a specific monado art to counter (AI Shulk is brain damaged)
I spent a lot of my playthroughs as Dunban, Rikki, and Melia. Melia is particularly powerful under player control compared to being AI.

On dunban you want agility, he can break topple if I remember correctly so use those arts, one of the auras gives him agility I think use that. generally you want to maximize break -> topple -> daze on your party and build to each character's strength (shulk being pure strength burst, melia being ether mage, reyn being traditional armour tank etc.)
make sure you're swapping skills that are useful on the character, for example giving melia some of the ether skills off sharla and riki's trees

Debuff everyone constantly. Shit out buffs and have a single heal move that negates Sharla's entire existence. You can really do anything you want with him, even a tank if you build for thorns damage and whatnot.

No, he is basically easy mode.
His damage over time effects do huge numbers and his heal makes you basically invincible.

I never said anything bad about my man Rikki. I played him a ton. He is basically a debuff focused character with tons of party support and control options, and his wide array of abilities gives him a lot of possible builds.

Sharla is probably the only character I rarely put into my party. Maybe I'd throw her in the niche situation of feeling like the healing was necessary.

Oh and don't feel you have to do literally every sidequest. Ones given by named characters will have little side stories, but the ones from randos are usually repetitive kill/loot quests that are not at all necessary unless you want to. Also, if you are on the Switch remake, if you feel things are too easy you have the option to remove levels from yourself from the start of the game, so feel free to use this to adjust difficulty. For some reason Xenoblade DE is the only game to have this as a default feature and not a NG+ unlock.

      Anonymous

Is it boring because you're overleveled? That's what happened to me, the solution is to just use the Expert Mode or whatever it was called to lower your level so you don't roflstomp through the game anymore. This is only available in DE though, but you should be playing DE anyway. Sidequests are very poorly made and I'd suggest just skipping some if you're getting burned out because of them. Also try to switch up the character you play as if you haven't been doing that yet, the combat system is pretty basic and the game quite long so that also helps prevent boredom rather than doing the same thing in combat for 100h or whatever. I particularly liked playing as Melia to switch it up since her spellcasting style felt the most different / unique.

      >For some reason Xenoblade DE is the only game to have this
It's because the overleveling problem is utterly insane without it. The combat system weighs the level number more heavily than pretty much everything else and if you do sidequests you overlevel like crazy. This leads to combat basically breaking down completely as you're so high level it's not even possible for enemies to hit you. The only way to fix it would be to rebalance the entire combat system, but they probably wanted to keep DE faithful and as such added a bandaid fix to the problem by allowing you to adjust your level so the game doesn't fricking break down.

They mostly fixed the overlevel issue in 2 but then paradoxically 3 has it much worse than all of them, sidequests easily push you up to like double the required level of the main quest and if you're overleveled you can't unlock new classes from heroes, thus effectively stalling character progression entirely.

Yeah but doesn't expert mode just make it last longer rather than make it harder?

          Anonymous

I'm not sure what you mean. Expert mode isn't a difficulty setting or something like that, it's literally a menu that allows you to adjust your character levels so if you're overleveled as frick you can adjust back down to the level of the area you're in and get the "intended" level of challenge rather than a snoozefest where enemies can't even land hits.

            >"intended" level of challenge
In light of this post, can anyone explain why JRPGs (still) use TTRPG-style vertical progression? What on earth does it offer over progression in metroidvanias, or LoZ, or even fixed XP at fixed points throughout the campaign, or basically anything else? What does it do that other systems can't that makes it worthwhile?

              Anonymous

Because they're supposed to be RPGs where the player is supposed to have the ability to decide on the character and / or party build and make it into whatever he wants, rather than just picking up components to complete a predetermined ability set. Granted, a lot of JRPGs are quite restrictive and don't really allow you to make truly significant changes to play style, but that's kind of another matter.

                Anonymous

But that all seems as just as doable with rationed XP. IIRC some Fire Emblems do that, and it actually makes party building more strategic by giving everything a long-term opportunity cost.
I should be more clear: it's not the use of XP and skill trees and open-ended builds that I object to; that's the part that makes sense. What's baffling is why (outside hardcore simulation games) vertical progression isn't paced more carefully, as seen in the original quote.

                Anonymous

This is a problem specific to Xenoblade and its devs have continually fumbled it, it's not like it applies to every other RPG out there. The problem mostly doesn't even stem from the overleveling in and of itself, but rather from poor game design decisions like making the level overtly important in dmg dealt, chance to hit and chance to resist special effects, or in 3 deciding that if you're overleveled you shouldn't be allowed to unlock new classes. Having fixed total XP would solve the problems by preventing overleveling entirely, but you could also just... not make your combat and progression systems overwhelmingly moronic in the first place. That would probably be better for the game in general. Why does being 10 levels higher than the enemy mean they effectively cannot hit you? Why was this a necessary element in the combat system? It seems extremely stupid and it IS extremely stupid since they had to add a menu so you can lower your level. It's just bad design.

I'm pretty sure there are RPGs which have fixed XP, though I don't particularly agree with the system. It's just an attempt by the devs to shove their arm up the player's ass and puppet how the player should play the game and what he's allowed to get and when. Just make the game and let everyone play as they wish, if some dude wants to grind the starting area for 300h because he wants to be OP for the rest of the game then let him do that.

No just skip the series entirly, if you are over 18 years old this series has nothing for you.
Its gameplay systems are dumbed down for morons.
Its story is a shounen tier melodramatic garbage that makes no sense
Its characters are literal stereotypes taken straight from C tier anime and manga shows
Its rpg mechanics are shallow and baby tier
Even its visuals support all im saying, just by looking at it if you are not a moron you can see who the target audience is.

I got memed into playing the series because morons on the internet keep praising it, its incredibly overrated.
