            Youre both wrong and moronic.
You can catch any pokemon using the oldman missigno glitch, your name will determine which pokes appear and their lvls.
Meanwhile the long range trainer glitch was found out around 03 and also allows you to catch any pokemon or battle any trainer, including oak, what shows up depends on the special stat of the last pkm you beat.

you can't get every pokemon with the old man glitch. you csn easily tell this just by realising there are more pokemon in gen 1 than there are characters you can use in your name, and a lot of those don't even give you regular pokemon and instead give you glitch pokemon or even trainers.

You would obviously need multiple playthroughs with different names, but what i saying is that you can effectively pick what shows up and its lvl.

it legitimately felt like a creepypasta. I didn't ever think it was going to leave the game and kill me but it did feel like I'd stumbled on something I shouldn't. I always saw friends having fun with Missigno in Red/Blue and the box cloning trick in Gold/Silver, but I was a late comer to the video games and only had Yellow and Crystal which didn't have the famous methods for triggering these any longer so I never got to toy around with them much, and I never went back just for that reason with emulators, either. But with the 3DS Virtual Console releases I fricked around to my heart's content, in Red I caught Mew, I used Missigno to dupe a bunch of one-time TMs and shit, and in Silver I used save file/new game trickery to get all three starters and likewise duped some items with box cloning.

Missingno probably wasn't that hard to find. Keep in mind that strip along Cinnabar Island won't update with new area data if you're coming from the island until you continue further into the water. Which means it would actually be fairly common for someone to fly to Cinnabar, enter the water, and immediately encounter a Pokemon from the area they just left. From there, it wouldn't be hard to experiment and find weird shit like Missingno

You play the game 1 trillion times like we ALL did growing. Pokemon was more or less my religion growing up as a kid.

So many little tricks and secrets I learned over:

    * You can change the level and type of Missingno based on your name you choose at the start
    * Mew can be caught in the game without cheating (requires Abra teleport)
    * Dratini can be caught Safari Zone water
    * Keeping S.S. Anne instead of having it disappear forever.
    * Leveling Magikarp legitimately (as in by itself)
    * Caughting Mewtwo with a Pokeball

      isn't glitch abuse still cheating?

        Preemptive tl;dr: No.
In a general sense, anything outside the rules of the game that is used intentionally to gain an advantage or inflict a disadvantage is considered cheating. No game has rules that are balanced around the assumption of fixed or weighted rolls, so using fixed dice is cheating.
For video games, there has to be a distinction made between doing something that the code allows but the developers didn't intend for, and doing something that the code outright DOESN'T allow by using external tools. The former is glitches. The latter is gameshark, cheat engine, aimbotting, and so on.
There's no equivalent to video game cheating in real life. It'd be like bringing a draw four card to Go Fish.

            Anonymous

            >Old Man glitch
            This one's not too hard.
Pokemon is a game that needs to take up an obscenely low amount of memory, since it's a frickoff huge RPG stuffed into a tiny Game Boy cartridge.
There's a spot on Cinnabar Island that doesn't actually have encounter data coded, likely because of an oversight. The game instead just pulls encounter data from wherever you just were. Initially this was used to get unlimited Safari Zone encounters.
However, remember how Pokemon needs to be extremely frugal with its data? It needs to remember what your name is while the old man gives you the catching tutorial, yeah? So it uses the databank normally reserved for wild Pokemon to store your player name, since normally, you wouldn't be getting any normal encounters immediately out of the catching tutorial.
Now, you can use the characters in your name to load arbitrary Pokemon, including several glitch Pokemon, into the encounter data table, and the surf spot on Cinnabar to actually ENCOUNTER those Pokemon.

            >but why does it need to remember what your name is during the tutorial?
Because it's replaced by the old man's name for that one battle, and has to be restored afterward.
            >Isn't it stored anywhere else?
Nope. Duplicate data is verboten when you're saving space like Game Freak was.
            >But why does it get put into the memory normally reserved for encounter data in particular?
They had every reason to believe it would be harmless. Anywhere you could go to that also had the chance to encounter something either scripted what that encounter was or had you go through a loading zone that cleared the previous encounter table to insert its own. Or at least, that's how it SHOULD'VE been. The Cinnabar spot was an oversight.

I don't actually recall the specifics of the Mew glitch, but it's probably similar. Pokemon was made on an incredibly tight "memory budget", so lots of things that shouldn't be related to one another in the slightest can be found right next to each other in memory, at least temporarily. Making a function read even one bit outside of its intended space can have wild results.

              >Pokemon was made on an incredibly tight "memory budget"
I recall reading a post some years ago that back sprites were compressed for that reason and that's why they look low res in comparison to the front sprites

Like I said, no. Cheating means introducing something to the game that could never normally occur. Gaining infinity lives by doing nothing in Mario, instead inputting a code on something that isn't Mario, is cheating.

i haven't used bank or any of that transfer bullshit so sorry if i don't know something but don't they have checks for "legality" or something, which flags mons obtained through glitches? in Mew's case at least, I heard Mew caught via the Mew glitch on VC will get flagged unless it matches a certain OT number by pure luck or something which strongly implies they don't consider glitch mons legal

                Anonymous

Glitch mons aren't considered LEGAL, no, but that doesn't mean they're considered CHEATING either. More just- the newer games wouldn't appreciate having garbage data in a Pokemon.

      >Caughting Mewtwo with a Pokeball
Broken English aside, there's no trick to it to be discovered in the first place. When compared with later Pokemon games' catching mechanics, seeing the "The ball missed the Pokemon!" message can be confusing at first, but really what's happening is just the game giving the odds of capture to you straight without any RNG involved in the amount of times the ball shakes. "The ball missed" is basically the 'zero shakes' of gen 1 and just means you have a very low chance, but a chance nonetheless if you just keep chucking balls.

you don't necessarily need the trainers most guides emphasize, but they certainly make mew accessible to you asap

the glitch has evolved to the point where you don't even need a second trainer, just a first one you can fly away from

      Anonymous

You just need to try and open the menu while walking into their line of sight once, from there you're opened up to a lot of experimentation.

      Anonymous

I can only imagine it started with someone realizing you could pause mid step. If someone realized that, it's pretty reasonable that they'd then think to try it stepping into a trainer's gaze. Then it's only natural to try triggering other things like flying when you know it's not supposed to be possible. I don't know about the rest, but people with a history of programming could probably make predictions that wouldn't occur to the average player.

People discover glitches and pass that knowledge onto other people that innovate it.
      >Glitch to catch any pokemon in the game as early as Cerulean City is discovered
      >Word of mouth, online forums, and most importantly for their time, game magazines publish the method
      >Other people experiment until they fully break down the cause and effects, or just happen to find a favorable roll (in this case, Mew)
Nowadays, glitch hunters use tools to streamline the process, but back in the day it was just a series of people discovering. There were also people using gamesharks aiding the process.

I always found it weird how long it took people to find the Mew Glitch. With no knowledge of how it works whatsoever it would only take like an hour of playing around with escaping from long range trainers to find out it can make random pokemon spawn.

    Missingno isn't really absurdly complicated.
it's pretty common that someone might fly to cinnabar and surf the right coast to look for new pokemon, and from there it's easy to notice the encounters aren't water encounters. From there you work out the encounters are from wherever you just left, and from there you start wondering "what if I use somewhere with weird encounter rules like safari zone or the capture tutorial?"

tldr; you're not mentally engaged with what's happening and thinking about things going on around you, but other people are. You're an npc.

That one, you can sort of see the logic for.
    >Step one: Discover this random spot copies the wild Pokemon data of wherever you just were (easily accomplished with Fly)
    >Step two: Experiment with what alters wild Pokemon data, at first by going to areas with cool or desirable wild Pokemon data, then places that should have none
    >Step three: Try every possible event that does something potentially nonstandard but ultimately intended, like displaying a person other than you on your side of the screen, in conjunction with this obviously unintended behavior
    >Step four: ???
    >Step five: Profit

I never decided to randomly fly to cinnabar island to look for water pokemon by surfing on the edge, likely because i wasnt that interested in doing so. Perhaps thats one factor for not picking up on the pattern to sniff out this glitch.

My guess water pokemon lovers were more likely to see the pattern with that edge since 1, they would fly there since they could easily walk two steps to a pokecenter to heal.
