How do people think this is the greatest game of all time?

How do people think this is the greatest game of all time? I really don't get it, nothing about this game is fun and the story isn't even that great. Horribly paced but laced with some cool moments. Would have been better as an anime than a game tbh

Best part of the game for me was the ost.

I like the combat but getting new ones was such a pain in the ass, should've just been more expirmental rather than just mashing to get it.

To add to this, thank God this game uses 2D sprites.

I played it and I had a damn good time with it OP what's your issue?

Encounter rate, braindead combat and text walls really did it for me. Graphics look nice and music is amazing, but everything else falls short. I guess I just got my expectations too high

Also forgot to mention massive load times. Even pausing has this really weird delay. Platforming isn't fun either, especially when you can get encounters while jumping

You have to understand turn based tards are literally moronic and pretend games like chrono trigger and FF7 are still good.

Chrono Trigger doesn't have random battles or walls of text. That's why the game is so popular.

It's the Evangelion of JRPGS, but unironically.

It's a fun, epic adventure on the surface and pretty thought provoking and deep under it, the best of both worlds. Even without the philosophical stuff you could totally just enjoy this as a cool fantasy sci-fi flick
The visuals and the music rock even if they're a bit stretched thin

The first disc was very nice. Combat system was fresh as a kid and I don't even know other games with similar combos that you needed to input for different specials in jrpg. Mechs were also great additions and when you got upgrades it felt really powerful (aside from that stupid fluffy that just became giant).
The second disc is horrible, long ass cutscenes without any exploration and then they waste a lot of time on their past incarnations. Deus was also a terrible boss.

Too bad the combo system loses its luster like 10 hours in.

Zoomer here, I hate turn based RPGs but that combo system was fricking great. keeps you engaged into doing random shit like a fighting game.

Legend of Lagaia, another really good PS1 jrpg. I need to replay that one and actually finish it some day.

who said it was this games unfinished

really wish we got remakes for games like xenogears that actually need them instead of shit like xenoblade chronicles and last of us

There was this one famous namegay who liked this game so much it because it was the 'best' of anime in game form. He loved it so much that he thinks it should have been FF7 (with Nomura designs
and writing)
but we don't see him that often anymore.

Anime people have absolutely no standards and are incapable of thinking critically. They also don't watch/read any other real media, so they have no frame of reference about how proper writing is done.
Just take a look at the highest rated shit on MAL. Same shit applies to video games with anime artwork.

Incredibly ambitious and innovative for its time. I remember it fondly. But ultimately its an incomplete game. And I wouldn't call it the greatest jrpg on playstation let alone greatest game of all time.

Zoomer here. I played it in 2020, and it’s my favourite game of all time. The story is exceptional, the atmosphere is great and it’s basically the pinnacle of Takahashi. It’s both Evangelion and 2001 in a single game.

A lot of interesting ideas and ambitious story, but yeah, the rough development clearly shows. I still enjoy it for what it is and am at least glad we were able to get the game at all.

Personally I romanticize the shit out of unfinished/flawed masterpieces. There is a mystique around imagining what could have been had it had the time and money to see its vision all the way through. Also, sometimes a game is much more than the sum of its strengths and weaknesses. I would venture to guess that most people don't choose their favorite games based on which ones had the least objective flaws, rather there is something about them that allows them to overlook the flaws. Xenogears has a lot of unique aspects that could hook someone and make them look at it with rose tinted glasses.

    >story isn't even that great
Three examples of games where the story is that great. Help me fix my shit taste.
