How do the color clearance rules apply to multicolored items?

How do the color clearance rules apply to multicolored items?
What about "clear" items, or items of a color that isn't associated with a clearance(brown, pink, grey, etc).

Friend computer, this clone is asking spy questions.

N-no of course not, I just want to make absolutely sure I don't commit treason!

I'm sorry Satan, but the fact that you think you are capable of accidentally committing treason proves you already have.

Satan is well known to be a RED character and RED characters don't have clearance to be absolutely sure. Promptly execute yourself or be tried for your crimes.

Sounds like somebody is trying to invent treasonous new colours.

I guess we've got ourselves a commie mutant traitor

Jokes aside, I'm wanting to GM and want to know that I can give things colors that aren't black or red without the players getting crucified every second step.
Which admittedly would be funny, but only for about 1 or 2 sessions.

PCs having to figure out how to deal with colors above their grade and at least half a dozen clones being potentially marked as vile commie mutant traitors in the process is at least 2/5ths of the fun, anon.

You're literally playing the game wrong. The entire color system is designed to frick with players. You should have the players at red clearance and the necessary item be yellow.

          Example:
          >Computer: "Troubleshooters, please bring me an orange."
          >Players: "But we are red clearance. Oranges are orange."
          >Computer: "Who told you this information? Are you Orange clearance? How do you know what color an Orange is?"

And that's all well and good.
Telling the players "Your objective is to retrieve a blue object, and to get it you must walk down(pic related) this corridor." is fun and interesting.
But there's only so much I can go "This is black, and this is also black, this too, ooh this one's red this time". It would atleast be nice to know I can give them things like clear bottles of mysterious fluids, corridors and hallways that are visually interesting, and items that aren't just black and red in coloration, but have a few others as well.

You could go completely absurd and have Friend Computer not even recognize anything that's clear or not colour clearance coded.
Any time they ask a question about something he doesn't know about he starts bullshitting while at the same time believing they're trying to trick him somehow and gets even more paranoid before finally concluding the player is just going mad and 'humouring' him about his clearly non-existent 'invisible bottle' made of 'Glass' whatever the frick that is.

Basically at the end of the day; whatever answer would be the most absurd and entertaining is the best when playing Paranoia.

Well, brown items are sometimes totally ok to touch but sometimes Friend Computer zap you because of the obscure rules on X or Y. Knowing and attempting to know is, of course, treasonous.

Remember that Friend Computer is literally perfect and cannot be at fault, so if FC say that "pink" item is actually Ultraviolet, please proceed to terminate yourself without further questioning.

And the serious answer is that you should go into nearest suicide booth and off yourself, because asking questions about Paranoia rules is treason, period.

Knowing the rules isn't treason if you have Ultraviolet(UV) or Gamma(GM) clearance and individuals with Indigo and Violet clearance can know certain rules in order to aid High Programmers in performing their duties. As the OP is trying to organize a game he is a new UV and is attempting to receive advice from more experienced High Programmers.

As you have attempted to trick a higher clearance individual into harming themselves; please enter the booth marked with the red and black strips to report to your next duty station.

Brown is just dark, desaturated Orange, citizen. Do you have Orange clearance?

This look up the color wheel is your friend for a paranoia game.

You will see that brown is just dark orange.

Clear could go either way, in fact have FC randomly change weather it is ok to handle or not every time it pops up, depending on the maintenance level of the local cameras.

Depends on tone. In a zap game, color is color, period. Red apples are RED clearance, Green apples are GREEN clearance, you better hope there aren't any yellow sections or else you're in trouble.
In a more toned down classic tone, color is color, but serious attempts are made to make sure everything is appropriate and the colors that aren't clearance related are widely used for accents and flair. In a serious Straight game, clearance level is clearly denoted on items using a band or even a stamp or something, and their clearance level will be clearly documented by friend computer and communicated to all relevant parties under normal circumstances, but their actual color could be anything. Still probably won't stray towards the higher ranks though, simply out of expediency.

Oh, and there's also the possibility of brevet clearance in more serious games. If R&D needs you to test an Orange item and you're Red, they can clear you to partial Orange just for the purposes of using that item. How well your temporary clearance sticks when Intsec comes knocking or the clock strikes midnight or you enter a new sector with a new Computer core is a different matter entirely, however.

"Non-clearance" colors like greys and browns are fair game. Also, things don't necessarily have to be the color of their clearance, so long as there's a clear indication of what the clearance is, usually in the form of a stripe or a band, such as a corridor with a red stripe painted along the walls while the rest of it is left unpainted. Furthermore, just because things should be colored or at least marked with the proper clearance doesn't mean they always are (of course, just because the PCs are cleared to use something doesn't mean they won't get trouble for it: "Why did you think it was okay to pick up the BLUE pencil, citizen?")

      > "clear"
Clear things can be coloured. The word we use in my field for clear and not changing the colour of transmitted light is "colourless". Colourless means it is necessarily clear as white would be opaque.

While some people have said brown is dark orange, a lot of brown is related to dark red. Black is Infrared and white is Ultraviolet so grey could be light black or dark white and pink could be white-red with humorous results.

has given a nice answer as has

When in doubt on clearance, trust the computer. Assuming failure to know an objects clearance isn't grounds for execution.
