I’m not doing anything that requires effort. Now, let’s discuss how to save FE.

It looks like Engage is already saving it with the BREAK system. We still don't know exactly how long BREAKs last but they most likely last one player/enemy phase. This neuters being able to focus on breaking maps with one overpowered unit because now all it takes is one enemy hitting and BREAKing them to cripple them, you'll be forced to actually make diverse party lineups and train all of them up. Also fistGODS go over rangetwinks now.

Also Engage has no retarded routes shit like Fates and 3H so (hopefully) it'll be an actually focused game and not one split between 3/4 different routes. Personally I really just hope the game is ironman friendly like older games, game seems to have a fuckton of units so it looks good so far.

Not an argument, there are now patches that add skills and mechanics from later games so you can make it play nothing like GBA FE. There's also custom engines that allow for even more changes like adding fates pair-up. It's even possible to make SNES FE and Fates romhacks now.

You have no excuse, work on your romhack/fangame NOW.

Yeah it's hard to go back after playing conquest and even three houses. Like, in those games you have options so you can, you know, use strategy?

GBA FE games is just stats stats stats. Henning is on a throne? Well, get higher stats on your units. Can I put someone with heartseeker next to h- Can I use draconic hex to- WHat about poison strik- No? Just gotta rely on luck? OK then.

The recent games have all those interesting strategic tools at your disposal, yet they’re hardly necessary. With how freely you can build your characters, you can easily turn them into a ball of stats via pair-ups, broken skill combinations, monastery grinding, etc and bulldoze through the game.

I understand this may kind of be an unpopular opinion though, my favorite game in the series is FE6. I think early game Maddening in 3H actually comes close in terms of fun and being equally strategically demanding, but Awakening is purely anti-strategy and Fates is a slog to play through on higher difficulties with the constant skill checking of every enemy. Forgot to check whether a specific enemy unit has Pass? Say goodbye to your healer 20 turns into the chapter, time to reset :^)

FE4 has by far the simplest gameplay and lowest amount of strategy of any FE game. GBA FE gameplay is much more complex and requires more skill than FE4 ever could, because it is hardly even trying to be an SRPG and is in many ways more of a movie game.

I hate complexity with no depth. I don’t want to spend 15 minutes doing calculations keeping in mind ninja debuffs, pair-up bonuses, lunge, etc and risk losing an hour of my life in a long map to an unexpected death when I could just trivialize the game with Camilla and Corrin. A strategy game being mechanically simple isn’t a bad thing if it’s correctly designed around that.

But yeah I guess you’re right maybe chess would be more fun if my bishop had Galeforce and Astra

Does game quality scale linearly with the amount of bullshit the game contains according to you? We just need to have more skills and more nonsense to keep track of because with every calculation we get +1 quality? You are really in the wrong franchise.

when video games are inherently an interactive medium, giving the player more control and options to manipulate the mechanics of the game is genuinely a good thing. The real question here is if you just want things boiled down to their most bare components then why don’t you just play virtual chess?

                Anonymous

No, it does not work like that. It is a game with rules and a vision behind it, you cannot indefinitely add bloat mechanics to it without it becoming shit, as nu-FE did. If there were no clear objective and plan to the gameplay mechanics of FE, there would not even be a game of any interest in the first place. Battalions and Combat Arts were a tremendous mistake.

                Anonymous

Well strategy goes out the window when you can bloat a couple of units with all the XP and reset the map until you get perfect stat growths. FE needs more than RNG to be a good SRPG which is what Fates (Conquest) did, you contrarian elitist gay

Strategy goes out the window when you can reclass any unit to any broken build and stack poorly thought out skills and effects like you're building a Yugioh deck instead of playing an actual video game. Fuck off back to FFT and never return, you casual newfag moron.

Is giving a unit a set of skills or reclassing not considered strategy to you? It's all a part of resource management, and it lets the player make a unit that might not be as good become useful without just pumping them full of stat boosters. How are you going to make a unit like Sophia or Gwendolyn usable? Meanwhile you can have a unit like Selena be a fast but rather weak mercenary, or go all in on her speed by reclassing her to a pegasus knight, or reclass her into something else by using her A+ or S support to pick up two other classes.

                >How are you going to make a unit like Sophia or Gwendolyn usable?
They do not necessarily have to be, Meg would be an even better example. Resource management is of course a large part of FE, but my issue with these broader formula deviations is that they fundamentally clash with the design philosophy of the series as I interpret it. Too much freedom, too many unnecessary attributes, gimmicks all over the place and the devs seemingly being at a loss for what the game should really be. Increasing the amount of "strategy", however you would define that, to an infinite extent should not be assumed to be a good thing - but nu-FE doesn't even do that, it loses the S more and more in favour of the RPG, whereas the opposite tends to be closer to the truth as you go back.

Yet they learned from their mistake in Awakening where everything was infinitely grindable and having no reasonable caps. Pair up used to give extra bonuses based on the stats of the unit pairing up, so they removed that and made stat bonuses only based on the class and support rank.
Units had 3 classes by default (except Robin and his children who had every class and are the best units because of this), so now everyone aside from Corrinsexuals only has one other reclass option, and can obtain 2 others from an extremely limited resource that costs a separate resource from standard reclasses. Reclassing itself is also limited until chapter 20 since heart seals are a limited resource until then.
Units could infinitely grind since reclassing lowered the displayed level, so now reclassing keeps your level consistent, limiting the amount of stats and skills you can gain from levels unless you use an extremely expensive resource to get the ability to level to 25 promoted, which might not even payoff since you could just get stat screwed.
I believe providing the tools to make a bad unit good is better than having a unit be unusable just cause. You're still limited in what you can do, but the options available to you are more impactful as a result.

Hacks are more like what I loved about FE, yeah. I just wish they didn't blend together so much. You can only see so much of the same GBA style and GBA portrait splices before you start to get sick of it. The Mega Man fangame scene is similar, so many of the same 8-bit style games. That's why stuff like Perfect Blue stands out, it looks and feels different and fresh and people are excited for it to release.

      >you're unsure who is going to be in your army or even the random enemy units. You could have a generic manakete
I wish FE made generic units more available since you have to dedicated time and experience to making them useful anyways. In fates Einherjer were too expensive and most of them were locked off until later in the game which made them worthless in Conquest since by the time you could buy them they were useless since they started at level 1 anyways

The viable generics in Conquest are the ones you can capture because they always have maxed out weapon ranks, can give you access to classes not typically available on that route, and can have unique skill combinations. Rallyman is the most popular generic from that game because of how useful he is.

And I don't think it needs saving. The series isn't on the brink of death and still exists, so there's that (not like other Nintendo IPs like F-Zero, Star Fox, Star Tropics, etc.).
There are lots of games in the series now, 16 mainline, all with fan translations that have never been easier to get into than now, even for retards. There are romhacks like other anons have mentioned. There's a new game in january. Whatever.

Fire Emblem has always been kind of busted gameplay wise, that's what makes it fun. Like stride in 3H totally broke the game wide open, and warp/rescue/dance have been broken since inception. I find it fun to just min-max and get the lowest turn count possible. There are always going to be things broken in the system. The story, who cares. I haven't been expecting much ever since the blood pact in fe10. Plus, anime shit is just the way it is nowadays, whatever.
