it is legitimately better off if Xbox dies and are replaced with ABK. At the very least, they'll be less likely to acquire and kill any more studios.
The only question is about keeping Sony on their best behavior but honestly they're starting to buckle under their own AAA weight and a Switch 2 next year is going to really pressure them a ton.

      Anonymous

yeah, they truly bring nothing to the table
even their flagship games like Forza and Halo have fallen off a cliff so there's no point in them going 3rd party either and all the studios under them have all flopped hard

Sarah Bond actually said in the interview that AAA games cost too much to make vs the realistic profit they can generate now and that’s coupled with post-covid recession leading to frugal spending by consumers.

Part of why I think Xbox won’t abandon game pass is because they know the service is still a killer deal in a bad economy, they’ll have to find a way to make it work

Sony was legitimately waiting for the price reveal of the Xbox Series X before they released their shit days later (or maybe a well later, I forgot how soon after). Without Xbox, get ready to pay $800 for the next PlayStation since "you're paying for quality".

                Anonymous

I'm not sure it's that simple to be honest. There was this report a few weeks ago that most people actually play older games. And currently, console sales are low and the PS5's current sales are trending lower than the PS4 in the same timeline. If Sony, especially in this current economy, comes out with a plastic box that's over 600 dollars no one would buy it.

You VERY much underestimate the PlayStation loyalists. They will buy the next PlayStation console simply because it's the next PlayStation console. Especially if they get what's essentially a "victory lap" console. The PS6 or whatever console that runs legitimately without Xbox competition will be bought and lauded on droves even if the console doesn't have a single game releases for the console.

Who in their right mind would enter the industry right now? There's an insane amount of things you'd lose just by attempting it. Buying and/or building up studios, getting your hardware out there and trying to market it with all sorts of games and partnerships, trying to establish yourself for god knows how many years while making huge losses while the majority of people just buy the next Playstation or Switch. There will never be another company that steps up. Way too risky with too much cost involved.

          Honestly? Steam
They were too forward thinking and too early with Steam console and handled it badly. If they took another swing at it today I think it would sell well considering that GPU prices are what they are

            Anonymous

I can see Steam honestly, good point. They are in a unqiue position because they already *have* established themselves as a huge cornerstone in the market just by being the essential store for PC gamers. People download steam immediately after a fresh Windows install. If there's anyone, it'd be them for sure.

            For one? Apple

I think Apple has the power to break in, but I'm not sure if they'd find this to be an interesting move for them. They are shitting so much money without even trying, why bother getting into an industry you don't really understand and lose years trying to study and understand it when you could just continue shitting out money the way you've already been doing for decades.

    1. Sony doesn't know MS's business contracts behind the scenes. No one does for that matter since they do a case-by-case basis for each game.

    2. Gaming is set to surpass Windows in growth, a sign that what they're doing is sustainable (see image).

      Anonymous

The gaming division is far more costly than the Windows division, but they hide most of the costs, online hosting costs the division nothing, Azure pays for all of that, and this is so that MS doesn't have to show investors that the division in reality makes nothing/loses money.

    They have nothing left.
They burned all their bridges with Japanese games ie anime and stuff
They ruined Gears of War with DEI hires, consultant agencies and forced female narratives which is sad because the series was the definition of dude bro 2000s culture which is why fans bought into it
They ruined Halo with greed and took far too long to discipline and fire the management responsible for tanking the series.
And then they kept cancelling all their exclusive game projects because of reasons they never disclosed beyond just wanting more shitty GAAS

Good riddance, they're the definition of a soulless piece of shit company. And then the games they ended up pushing put into the market went out like a wetfart and bombed <redfall,starfield,f2phalo>
Hopefully they also kill off call of duty with shitty executive decisions but i sincerely doubt it, they probably already have policies in place to prevent sabotaging Activision bliz

people don't understand xbox. microsoft is the largest company on earth. they make all their money in cloud services and office software. this is good business but it doesn't give them many opportunities for marketing. xbox is the solution. instead of being an esoteric business to business brand they can be a gaming company. if xbox can manage to make money that's just the icing on the cake, but it isn't needed. having a large gaming group also helps windows maintain dominance in pc gaming. pc gaming isn't a large industry for microsoft but having points in windows favor is worth a lot.

According to reputable sources, take this as you will:

    >Phil Spencer is planning to retire this year or early next year

    >Xbox Game Studios brand will be rebranded as Microsoft Game Studios

    >Microsoft is still planning to shutter or downsize or merge more studios, specially the ones with not well known IP's, Microsoft is pivoting as a big AAA third party publisher, studios with AA or less known IPs most likely will be merged or axed

    >Microsoft closing Arkane, Tango etc was most likely due to Activision purchase and they really really want to cut costs and maximize profits

    >Microsoft is really really going full third party, this will be heavily pushed in 2025, and they're gonna hint at this at their upcoming Xbox Games Showcase in June

    >Hellblade 2, Halo Master Chief collection, Starfield and Gears are confirmed to come to PS5

    >Starfield will release for PlayStation 5 in Fall/Winter of this year along with the expansion

    >Contraband seems to be canceled, if they don't show it this year, it's most likely canned

    >Perfect Dark is in development hell too, most likely will be canceled as Contraband.

    >Game pass is definitely unsustainable; the market they have is not enough to offset the cost.

    >Microsoft is planning to revamp Gamepass, they're planning to hike the price and/or include tiers, day one games and Activision Blizzard games will be on the most expensive tier

    >Xbox will go all-digital (no more physical releases) with ads on gamepass (pre-roll or at the end of a chapter e.g. Like a Dragon) and AI community managers.

    >Microsoft is planning to announce a White Digital Xbox Series X on their upcoming June show, and most likely will hint/announce an Xbox handheld as well

    >Next Xbox consoles will be Xbox branded third party machines, you will be able to buy from Steam, Epic, etc and Microsoft Store, most likely will be a niche product like Steam machines.
