How do you feel about day/time-specific events like Bug Catching Contests or Lapras only appearing on Fridays in Union Cave?

How do you feel about day/time-specific events like Bug Catching Contests or Lapras only appearing on Fridays in Union Cave? Do you think that they're cheap ways to inflate engagement with the game and an inconvenience or do you think they add some richness to the game's world and like having something to look forward to?

It's fun as a casual "oh hey look at this thing that popped up today" thing but it's quite annoying when you want a specific hold item or TM and have to either wait a few days or fiddle with the system clock.

Oh, and the way that the Johto games handle trainer rematches is total bullshit and they should have just put the Vs. Seeker in HGSS.

They should have put the Vs. Seeker in every fricking game

    >LMAO DUDE YOU GOTTA WAIT UNTIL ~~*WE*~~ TELL YOU YOU CAN DO SOMETHING
    They suck
    >B-B-BUT SOU-
Because a new Lapras appearing out of thin air every Friday is soulful
The only correct time system is having a game use only day/night elements, have this actually impact the world (NPCs have notably different behavior, new events might happen) and have it operate either off unreal time and/or something the player can actually manually shift

While I sort of agree, I think GSC can get a pass just because of the time in which it was made. Before someone posts some obscure game from around that time or even earlier that did the same concepts but better, spare me, please. You can and should still post it, though, I implore you. What I'm saying is: I don't think GSC did it poorly. Could it have been better? Maybe. Limiting the Lapras to a guaranteed male and then a guaranteed female for breeding purposes would have been cool, just like there's only one Driftloon in Gen 4.

its nice worldbuilding but its annoying overall, i think a "once every day" is fine but a "once every tuesday at 1:48 pm" is fricking annoying

People generally have their free time at similar times every day. If I have the time to play video games around 7-8pm, it's unlikely that I'll be free for games around 1-2pm another day. Meaning, in order to see any of the other time of day events, I'd have to change the system clock. No soul, no engagement, just an extra layer of annoyance to get through. Using a shortened in-game day and mapping events to that instead of real time is fine though.

Man I can see perfectly how this thread is going to go
    >everybody comes in and says they hate the time system
    >homosexual autist walks in to aggressively say the time system is good or tries to start genwar instead of making good points for the time system
    >homosexual autist derails the thread
    This board sucks

You're already wrong so far. Literally first words in the first post are "its fun" and look wow nobody tore each other apart yet. Shocking, the person who thinks he's smarter than everyone else is wrong.

Hey frickhead, don't fricking misinterpret my fricking posts. I said that it's fun CONDITIONALLY, and went on to give an example of it being bad. You quoted me as if I said it's a total good. Also, I went on in a self-reply to say that the trainer rematches are bullshit, so that's two strikes against the day system, and one extremely minor thing in favor of it. Do not mark me down as being pro-day-of-the-week events.

      hey look there he is

They make the world feel alive, like it goes on even when you aren't playing... but GF even removed day/night cycles because zoomies couldn't into periodic gameplay. Imagine having to WAIT for anything in the current year?

If they're going to bring it back they need to implement the PLA camp system so everyone can pick the time they want to wake up.

I have always wanted a part of the game that locks you out if you don't get there on time. Like a ferry that leaves every day at 7 pm, and without surf you have to catch it to get to the next town. Maybe a gym leader that won't let you fight them after 5 pm cause they go home.

Its cool and cute but its always applied very discreetly.

I actually really like this in the context of a non-linear Pokemon game where you could just take the ferry to a new location if you get there at a certain time of day, but if you missed it or if there's hours until it arrives, it's just better to go explore somewhere else. Or if you already found surf, you can just travel that path without the time limitation.

I like the thought behind it, but I'd prefer if it weren't based on irl time. A system with maybe a 1 hour day-night cycle and in-game weekdays would be nicer and more convenient.

As small side content, daily events can work, but as the only way to access certain parts of the game they are a terrible idea. Limiting access to pokemon or features based on when you play just kills the natural momentum of the game by forcing you to plan around it.

It's great and makes the world feel more involving.
Accessibility to stuff is a non issue when weekends exist too. Waking up earlier to catch something like ledyba is memorable.

And as for the stuff that's only available at certain times during the middle of the week?

This one. Day/Time events are great, I loved them in GSC/HGSS. Also, asking if people think they're used to inflate engagement... I should hope a videogame is engaging??
