i like that horner is complimented by death and goldilocks. Individually they would've been fine but maybe not as memorable, together they make for a great ensemble.
Death is the personal antagonist, directly tied to the protagonist and his arc. Goldilocks is more of a reinforcement of the themes of the story and gives the movie a simpathetic antagonist. Finally horner is the big threat chasing the heroes (something death can't do too much or he would've overstayed his welcome) and is still tied to the themes

      Anonymous

The villain motivation tire list is shit in general. You can write an inherently evil villain (your pic) or a villain who motivations are hard for a normal person to understand (Anton Chigurh) really well, and you can write a “sympathetic villain retaliating for the wrongs done to them”(Daenerys Targaryen) or a villain with arguably better reasoning than the hero (le ebin Thanos) poorly. And sometimes an objectively evil villain or some otherworldly monster works way better than some pseudo-philosophical gay.

OP's take is mid as frick. Peasant tier at best.
Everybody knows that what makes a good villain is both entirely tied to context and their relationship to the hero and in what ways the villain pushes protagonists to overcome themselves. Motives are a mere accessory to these goals and any villain with any motive can be interesting as long as you respect these rules of writing.
Characters without a proprer context and environment do not work even if you spend millenias writing their individual bios to make them as EPICK as possible.

why do people act like Armstrong had a point? His plot was to start a war between the US and Pakistan using an army of kidnapped brainwashed child soldiers so he could turn everything into Fist of the North Star and "purge the weak" with his army of cyborgs. His first scene in the game is ordering thousands of kidnapped children killed for being "burdens on their societies and cities."

Is it just because of his memetic English voice acting? I feel like this never would have happened if they stuck to the Japanese script. He sounds like every other stock "in my world only the strong will survive!" anime or fighting game villain like Heihachi or Vegeta. Also he didn't play college ball you know in that version and doesn't have the omelet quote.

      Yep

Most consoomers do not understand the deeper layers of storytelling so they can't analyze storytelling, they can only relate with specific characters.

Armstrong, on the surface, is very easy to relate to for most edgelords and anarchists because he's basically embodying the "FRICK THE SYSTEM!" sentiment. Couple that with his wacky, charismatic meme persona ans most people back when the game released and in its ressurgence in popularity went "LMAO XD XD LE NANOMACHINES WHAT A FUN CHARACTER XD XD but for real tho he be dead ass low key speaking sum truth tho" ignoring the fact that the entire game narrative and visual environment up to this point was designed to highlight the hypocrisy of Amrstrong as a character who preach to the choir, but is nothing more than a man LARPing as the kind of future man that he envisions living in his anarchist world.

The one redeeming factor for Amrstrong is that he was a man of his word in the end. He lost to Raiden and immediatelly accepted him as being in the right. Armstrong, at the very least, did fully believe in might makes right and was fully ready to happily relinquish the future to anyone who could beat him.

        He is great.

I think Armstrong might have landed a bit better if Revengeance actually went a little harder on showing a post-MGS4 world. Literally the entire fricking world had come to rely on privatised war as its major means of commerce and it was essentially a post-truth society because of Patriot filtering on fricking everything. If we'd seen a world recovering from that then Armstrong's stuff about
        >the economy's kind of fricked after SOP went, so it's reasonable for me to try and kickstart a big fricking war so we can get back on track
        >lol jk SOP and the war economy fricking sucked and made everything shallow, I'm actually pulling us out of it
But we don't really know much about the post-SOP world and the end of the Patriots except for a different set of PMCs being top dog and using cybernetics more heavily.
It's not really a fault of the game, as it's obviously a more straight forward story than most Metal Gear and its focus is intentionally on Raiden, but I think if the context Armstrong actually exists in had been emphasised then he might have stood stronger.

considering the modern rise of "dindu nuffin" villains that always have tragic backstories because everyone has to be redeemable for moralgays and the tumblr sexyman crowd now, you could probably bump shit tier up a couple of levels

It's honestly extremely entertaining when a villain's entire schtick is "frick you gimme mine," especially when they wear it on their sleeve with pride and don't ever bother pretending otherwise

I still stand by my statement that context makes the difference. A redeemable villain can either be shit or great depending on their environment and conflict with the protagonist. If the conflict betweeb villain and protag is surface level, then the villain will ve shit regardless of personal motivations.

jack horner from puss 2 became an instant favourite because he was a piece of shit all the way down as opposed to le sudden twist villains or le intergenerational drama that disney has been peddling for so long

    >just evil or lusts for power hurrrr
morons who have not read the entire canon should never say any commentary about Tolkien works
Sauron is a control freak who thinks he can make the world better by taking away everyones freedom and himself deciding everything for them, and wants to industrialize every civilization after conquest

Id switch mid and high tier.
I find someone who did evil things just to live to be more in line with great tier and overall more interesting then

The damage this template has done to villains in media and its consequences have been a disaster. Jack Horner in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was considered a breath of fresh air just because he was a stock villain with no homosexual sob story to justify being a malicious butthole. That's how bad things have gotten.

Sauron wanted to modernise middle-earth and raise the standard of living for everyone under his dominion. Read the abridged book for the real story and not the one peddled by the midgets and the warmonger aragorn.

      >How do you like your villains in vidya?
      Yes.

In a vacuum, he's squarely in Great Tier. But since he spends most of the game being a generic evil mastermind before exposition dumping his tragic backstory in the final cutscene, he honestly deserves Meh Tier.
John White is still the only good antagonist in this series.

I enjoy villains best when they are unmistakably evil but still hold a strong a motivation.

I prefer it when the villains motives are never explained and remain a mystery even after you complete the game.

Elder god tier make for the deepest and most interesting stories.
Videogames writers are garbage tho so they settle with the first three. Which is fine. Most of gaming's iconic villains are found in shit tier. It's all about execution I feel.

I've been on a Spaghetti Western kick thanks to RDR2 and FNV. I like Mid and Shit tier because of how Westerns treat the villain in the end. Micah was alright, I still don't believe that he started snitching after returning from Guarma.

what a shit chart, villains who are essentially right can destroy the story if the author tries to frame them as wrong and villains who are just greedy or power-hungry can be a great fit even for more complex stories.

armstrong's plan was shit if you put tought on it, but like a real politician he convices you with his charisma

i personally like the great tier, i feel its the most realistic ones. i also like the shit tier ones because sometimes you just need a force of nature to get the plot going you know?

I like a pure evil villain with no humanity that, through their terrible deeds, manifests misguided villains.

    The indoctrinated and the Reapers.
    The Covenant and the Prophets.

Victims of circumstance, twisted by darkness to be at odds with the protagonist. It's an even better story if villains can find redemption, who through talk no jutsu can find the strength and wit to fight the evil that they were once subjugated by, if only for a few moments.

Being able to take on that final evil is a fantasy, and what makes a story an epic. I'm not interested in learning that "morality doesn't exist" for the millionth time. I want stories of masters, not slaves.
