        That's just a matter of shitty renderings of 頑張る and its variants. Notice how it sounds normal in some circumstances while it sounds odd in others. There is no one perfect way to interpret/render it in English, and it's up to the translator's discretion to ensure that the proper feeling and intent is carried through.

    Using the character's archetype as much as possible and writing the most ideal things. I personally dislike huge amounts of text, so I write my characters to only say things I really want them to say.

    Read a lot, and a wide variety of materials, and learn what great, good, average, bad, and terrible dialogue looks like.
    Those who write but seldom read are pretty easy to pick out from people who clearly read often. However, your output is only as good as your input, so making sure that you absorb a lot of different things rather than just a narrow few things will help to make sure your influences don't shine through too hard in any one place.
