I'd argue them being special makes it even better. Every single one can literally be the main character, if you remember correctly at the beginning of the game. Kind of the whole point. You were all on the ship, you all have a story, you're not special. After playing so much goyslop where you are always the chosen one, it's incredibly refreshing. I just wish they chimed in more during dialogue. i like that they still always normally have something to say if you actually talk to them after the fact though.

Like even the idea that I can romance someone else but then take my ass to Avernus during the end to accompany the poor poor Karlach sounds so bad it's hilarious. Like compare the kind of dialogue options you get for other companions, especially Lae'zel and Shadowheart. The way you can bully them almost throughout the game, and the kind of options you are given during their personal quests... It's 100% different. Karlach is handled with kids gloves when other companions don't get the same treatment at all is kind of grating.

Even with the "new" backstory with his dad and all, there would be so much more drama and sauce in his story if you found out that he's been lying about the whole folk hero thing and was actually someone born with a silver spoon who took a shortcut to power by taking a deal with Mizora.
Even ties up the story better with his father estranging him.
The only reason I can think of of them cutting that out is that without him, the party wouldn't have a single conventional, no caveats good guy.
Gale is personable, but eventually, you peel off the layers and figure out that he's a bitter narcissist with a power hungry streak. There's some hints to it early on, especially if you reject his advances specifically *after* initially accepting them, but IMO, that's what makes his character really pop, but it comes out a bit too late.

Im38 hours in and I just reached Act 2. I've been using Shadowheart a lot so we already kissed and all, but frog girl has barely said anything about our relationship (and we already used the machine in the creche), and Karlach has only mentioned the mechanic stuff and thats it. Am I doing something wrong? I've been a little cautious with the guys, I cant use Halsin so rejecting him was easy, and I think I've managed to keep Gale as a friend, same with Astarion. But I want to see if I can have something with the gals

I agree but you can get Laezel to read Gith tablets that prove Orpheus is still alive. One is found in the arcane tower in the Underdark and the other is found in the creche I believe, I don't know if there are more. Laezel should have already started to form a distrust of Vlakith before you even meet her in the creche. Of course even if you don't read the tablets I'm guessing Laezel can still be convinced to side with you
Its my first crpg, playing on Tactician and it is t as bad as people make it out to be, but I do have to exploit vidya jankiness to win sometimes. Likability is a different story and depends on what personality types you prefer
Asterion gets the biggest buff from his story. The autistic side of me equates that to real consequences, all narrative is fluff unless it leads to buffs or debuffs.
If there's a model of a thing in a game it only really exists if I can interact with it. Only people that can be killed are really there.
The buff is irrelevant because you don't get it if you don't ascend. Both paths are part of his content. Similar thing with Shadowheart. The Shar version of the spear is definitely better, but most people don't take that path with her.
In terms of content, Shadowheart has by far the most and it's not even close. I wasn't sure whether to put Lae'zel or Astarion second, but settled on Lae'zel.
Shadowheart doesn't get anything either way. The gear is shit so her entire story might as well not have happened, it has no effect.

The overall quality is about the same with all the main companions except for the ones they added last minute. Shadowheart's content definitely feels more extensive though since so many main plot points are relevant to her character arc.

Minsc is underrated in this thread. He's actually way better written in BG3 than in BG2/1. It sucks that he doesn't have that much personal content but he adds a lot of energy to the party that is otherwise completely missing from the bg3 original companions.

Find a way to give yourself advantages. High ground, sneak attacks, etc. You have to use your party to set up opportunities for one another.
Rogues benefit a lot from dual wielding, since all your damage is loaded into Sneak Attack dual wielding light weapons means you get more attacks to try and trigger it even if they don't have high base dice.
Make sure are using finesse weapons, make sure your dex is very high(+17), don't use for example two rapiers unless you have a dual wield feat, bless yourself, etc
Max dex and use a finesse weapon for melee. Dual wielding can be good but so are shields.
Hand bows are the only ranged thing we can dual wield but with them you get 3 shots at level 3.
If you have no bonus on your attack and the opponent AC is 10 you get a coinflip, you have to roll above 10.
18 dex gives +4 to the attack roll. Proficiency gives +3 so you should have +7 meaning you only have to roll above 3 against basic bad guys.
Dual wielding hand crossbows is so strong it almost feels like cheating.
Those things are disgusting on my Ranger.
They are also bugged and questionably implemented. The dex modifier applies to the offhand even without dual weapon fighting, and the sharpshooter trait doesn't subtract 5 from the attack roll of the offhand but still adds the damage.
That explains the absolute assrape I was dishing out with Astarion
And here I thought that Astarion had such a high accuracy when he had advantage and stealth that the penalty didn't matter.

I'm currently trying to get her recruited while also having Karlach and Wyll around. Had originally heard that turning the Tieflings against the Grove would give an option to have her back off while sparing the Tieflings but that was a lie and Dammon or w/e the smith's name was got killed by the Druids. Currently in the Underdark and was going to hit Act 2 after doing Grymforge, not continuing the Raid the Grove questline past her asking for the Grove location after freeing the prisoner.
I have no idea if I'm wasting my time.

Play Barbarian because you have the best dialogue choices. Im not versed enough into the game to know when to multiclass for minmaxing so ive been playing as a pure barb the whole way on tactitian, so its not necessary, but the other class is fighter. Fighter is a better version of barbarian imo because of the amount of heavy armor in the game that you can get early on is really good and you have action surge, so you can hit 4 times in 1 turn and essentially 1 turn KO really hard enemies and since you need to use jump so often to cut the distance, its really hard to use rage early in a fight.

its just kind of funny that, depending on wether you are introverted or extroverted, your list of favorite companions is the complete opposite. extroverts like companions who overshare their sob stories with them, so Karlach and Astarion. Introverts like those who don't, so Shadowheart and Wyll (don't worry, Wyll will eventually overshare, and i bet you will love that.) You like those characters for the exact same reasons i hate them, and vice versa.
I don`t think that`s it though. I won`t deny character attitudes weight heavily on first impressions but personally i was thinking about it from a storytelling point of view. Every character needs a role to play in the story, a reason to be part of the adventure. Some character arcs just feel more clearly defined than others, at least early on, even if it`s not entirely clear how their stories will tie in to the main conflict in the end.
oh, well i wont spoil anything for you, but it seems to me that most of the characters are somewhat significant in the world of bg3 or their part in the story, not that ive experience every character stories from A to Z. some dont open up too much in act 1 though. for me, i just accept that these people are assembled together, just like you have to accept that laser guns are possible when watching star wars. i dont usually analyze the premise too much, but i found it generally weak here.
Well, that`s something to look forward to. Maybe by the end of the game my opinion will be totally different.

I wanted to do a comfy bro party, but Gale is such a horny gay and Astarion is a sassy gay Edgelord, so it's hard to really make a bro team without conflict, especially if you're doing some Lawful natured playthrough as Astarion dislikes any wholesome or nice response to situations.
Gale and Wyll lean more towards Lawful natured decisions. Lah'zul is a bitch who only likes edgy replies, kind of like Astarion, and Shadowheart is kind of neutral in her moral system. Running a party with Wyll, Astarion, and Gale seems retarded as I find Wyll to be kind of weak. Sorcerers are way more useful than Warlocks, and most people tend to run Shadowheart in their party for heals and buffs, which makes sense.
I do like Wyll but he really doesn't seem to bring anything to the party comp, like sure you can run him in the party but Shadowheart is a better pick for utility. I never liked Lah'zul, she's ugly and rude. Anorexic frog alien bitch that looks 80 years old and only cares about VIOLENCE and BATTLE. Astarion is charismatic though, just wish he wasn't a sassy gay edgelord vampire.

I don't like having rude people in my party, especially people that make fun of me and threaten me. If you're playing a fighter, warrior type class then you really don't need her for combat as you fulfill that role yourself.
She's the only romance that naturally grows. Most of the others is just them worshiping your cock and praising you for existing. Lae'zel goes from seeing you as a idiot, to a piece of meat, to some that she should respect, to someone she loves. It has payoffs in cut scenes as well, the sunrise one actually made me taken aback to how much they developed her. You even get one path ending where she just abandons all of her people and duty to be with you, no speech check required. In short the romance feels more like a game inside the game, than just having cute comments throw at you as well as dick sucking after so many "[Character's name] approves"

Astarion, Shadow heart and Lae'zel have the most diverse story paths, you have 3~4 outcomes for each of them in their long term futures and what they become. Gale is somewhat binary of either make him god hungry or monk life. Minthara Wyll, Halsin, Karlach are so locked into their roll you are more a passenger than having any real impact on their journey short of them dying sooner than later.
If your companion accepts the foursome/fivesome with the twins they are immediately F tier dogshit.
