Its very good as a tool to make dev cheaper while looking better than normal 2D. However the cost reduction of the style should be reflected in the price of the game.
Octopath selling for $50-60 is fucking absurd. Meanwhile Wandering Sword is $25 and looks even better
It looks cool but it shouldn't be so ubiquitous.
I prefer the watercolor style of SaGa Frontier 2 personally and it would be cool if such a style was revisited.
it's good enough looking and if it encourages them to keep making the kind of games they've been making with it then i'm all for it. Lower budget full length games are a dying breed and it's leaving a devastating hole in the gaming landscape, so if HD-2D is the price we have to pay to get more games like that i'm all for it.
Not sure why you'd bother comparing the two. aside from both being JRPGs they have almost nothing in common.
I do agree Octopath 2 is a better game, it's probably my GOTY this year.
Why would I bother comparing two party based JRPGs released within 12 months of each other on the same system? Fuck knows, maybe I'm a retard like you.
"Party based" is a pretty meaningless term, pretty much all JRPGs are party based, but you wouldn't normally compare say Etrian Odyssey and Tales of Symphonia just because they both have parties and ported to the switch in the same year. Likewise a 2D turn based RPG with a retro design focus is pretty different from a 3D real time RPG.
epitome of soullessness
looks awesome and I want more of it
Looks jarring.
looks ok.

Octopath is also a longer game with better music. Not hard to see the cost raise. They also look the same.
wandering sword fucking blows dick and controls like ass.
At least it isn't "sprite grafix" that are not anything like 3rd/4th gen but are pretending to be. Better than chibi.
Hate this shit when done like this. Looks as bad as brown and bloom did. Turn off the fucking filters

hideous and soulless
its ugly but bearable.
I liked it in triangle strategy and that's about it
it all looks like a really ominous dream, to be honest. Not a nightmare, just a dream that leaves a pit in your stomach. Pass.
Poor substitute for what modern pixel art should be
>480p
>modern
Yes?
>missing the point
The Star Ocean remake is super sexy.
it looks like shit, also the movement sucks, at least for the one I played: Triangle Strategy
I haven't actually played any games that do it, but I think it looks fine.
>HD-2D
OH MY HECKING YIKES BREHS, LOOK AT THIS SD-2D GAME!
unironically looks like trash
I get migraines from looking at these games in motion.
i think the backlash against sprites on 3D backgrounds is the gayest shit I've ever seen and I've felt that way for about 20 years
Modern filters and lighting effects feel cheap when applied to pixel art.
If you're going to make it 3D then at least let me rotate the camera a la Dragon Warrior VII for PS1
octopath and triangle strategy look tacky as fuck.

Octopath Traveller 2 is so fucking good. I'll probably get hate for saying this but I think OT2 is a superior JRPG experience to XC3.

Sorry but Star Ocean 2 remake kills it.
remake's can't be GOTY, they aren't from this year. at best it could win GOTY 1998
I think it's alright
I don't even mind the rough details in the landscape
