How does?

How does Ganker feel about video game directors like Kojima, Ken Levine, Todd Howard, David Cage, Neil Druckman, Hidekata Miyazaki, etc? I would use the word "auteur" but I don't like it. Game directors who are so deeply involved that the project that it wouldn't exist without them. The game is basically their vision that other people helped facilitate.

In Kojima's case the more freedom he got the more painful the games became. I get that he didnt want to continue mgs but the cutscenes/story get borderline insulting the further you go. Too much hype around the guy, he's not horrible but not deserving of the amount of praise he gets.
Todd Howard is a fraud. Games under him get more casualized and the rpg element is almost dead in all of the recent games. That a lot of people idolize him on this board is really puzzling.
Druckman is a fraud and should just be working on shows or movies to peddle his subversive narrarives.
Miyazaki is alright, but Elden Ring wasnt the best and is the least replayable of souls games. I really hope he does something new because it's getting too samey. The open world didnt work in the game's favor and post Leyndell everything turned into a huge drag (save for Haligtree and Farum Azula)
Cant speak about the others much

Only if you want to be insulted. For some reason, only games are held to a standard like this. No one bats an eyelash at goofy Tarantino shit. But if Kojima has a weird scene he's a hack

                Anonymous

Every scene was pretty bad. Kojima is at his best when he does pure undiluted gameplay. Every since he was let off his leash in MGS4 his writing became cringe.

Kojima doesn’t do that though. Auteurs fall into many categories and guys like Kojima are propped up by their surrounding talent. He has 2 bad ideas for every good 1 idea. It worked when he was young and it was novel but people are seeing through the cracks. And his understanding of cinematography is basically freshman film student level. He’s a worse Tarantino, a collage artist with good marketing sense. And MGS2 is my favorite game of all time so I’m not some hater here.

Can’t comment on Miyazaki. Levine is absolute dogshit and has no ideas of his own. Druckmann is an annoying subversive and front runner and way worse than Kojima on his best day but the same type of derivative perpetually thinking in memes and movie references sort of person.

And finally, without strong behind the scenes knowledge it’s hard to make a quality judgment on what some of these types bring to the table.

Kojima may not be world class at anything but actual game design (average cinematography, writing, etc) but the way he blends everything is where he shines. Mgs2 as you mention is the best example of that. He was suffering before it was fashionable

Yeah but my point was creatives need a good producer to keep them in line. I’m happy to say Kojima is a talented designer but I’m equally likely to point out everything past MGS4 sucks (Stranding was actually a step in the right direction) and his Tim Schafer-tier inability to manage a budget.

I think video games can’t be driven by one person. True in all artistic mediums but especially true here.

              Anonymous

Kojima is terrible at budgeting I will not argue with that kek although all of the listened music was cool, paying so much for big name actors was a waste. Especially since Boss barely has any dialogue.

And yeah game definitely cannot be made alone. That much goes without saying. Id like to think that the role of a good producer/director is to find the best people for each job while still guiding them in the direction of the vision. And in the case of an auteur , that is his vision

              >and his Tim Schafer-tier inability to manage a budget.
Considering that he's made hugely profitable games for about 25 years now I think he knows how to handle a budget.
Not at all like Tim Schafer who had to sell his own company to finish a basic platformer after burning through both their crowdfunding money and their first publisher's investments.

lol stop being a fanboy, literally every MGS after 2 has been over budget which led to Konami telling him to frick off.

And no shit, that’s why I made the joke.

                >literally every MGS after 2 has been over budget
Got sources for the budgets of those games and how much he went over them by?
If he didn't know how to stay within a budget they would've kicked him out decades before. Konami just wanted to switch to making mobile games and low effort shit and no longer had any interest in his AAA stuff. Even MGSV was very profitable.

The only two such authors I have still some resect for are Nicolay Dybowski (Pathologic and The Void) and Johnatan Blow.
And even those are debatable. Dybowski likely is still extremely dependent on his time, and it's likely that it is his ability to surround himself with the right people, more than his personal vision, that makes their games so god damn good. He might be in the end an ingredient, not the cause.
And as for Blow, I respect his design talent. But I did not enjoy one of his total two games. And also I'm convinced convinced he is an insecure c**t.

Every other "autheur" personality out there is either a complete dipshit making pure garbage, or has proven himself to be a lightning in the bottle.
Take someone like Colantonio for an example. Yeah, his work with arkane - fricking amazing.
But the moment he left the studio, he lost the touch.

    Oh yeah, and also:
    >Todd Howard
Toddy is the DEFINITION of uncreative, dull, budget obsessed corporate manager, and I have no idea how you managed to miss that. Did you seriously think that Todd actually plays a CREATIVE role in Beth? First of all: Beth does not have any creativity.
Second of all, every single fricking piece of news about inner workings of Beth confirm that Todd is obsessively risk-averse, obsessively frugal, entirely marketing-and-market research focused dull and cowardly little hobit who serves as an actual bottleneck of any true signs of any form of creativity.
He is the person insisting that Beth games are now the insane festivals of mediocrity that they are.

He became director during Morrowind's development; it was being worked on for 2 years prior to that point and he was in charge for the remaining 2.
If being successful means you need to have Skyrim-tier casualization and non-existant rpg then maybe the company should've died. That many people consider it the peak of anything is bad for the industry.

Those ones you mentioned are mostly shit. Miyazaki had a good run with demon's and dark souls but he's been phoning it in ever since. Kojima was good up to and including MGS 1.

I prefer Takashi Tezuka, Yoko Taro, Masaya Hashimoto, Shinji Mikami, Toru Hagihara, Shigeharu Umezaki, Ryuichi Nishizawa etc
