How far can WotC go with their trend of having less and less concrete content per book and still get away with it?

How far can WotC go with their trend of having less and less concrete content per book and still get away with it?
All the handwaving and vagueness means more work for the DM who already paid a plenty of money for the book.

As far as they'd like. The next 5e book could be a couple hundred of blank pages, and people would buy it and defend it because it says "Dungeons & Dragons™" on the cover.

Given how shit the rules are why would you want more of them?

As long as they throw in a few new overpowered spells or classes for players, people will eat that shit up. Silvery Barbs carried an entire book on it's own, even though any DM with two halves of a brain cell to rub together bans that shit.

So less than half the DMs running 5e?

Back in the 3.5 days, I more or less ignored half of the pages in every book because they were irrelevant. They're more or less just cutting out those pages, so I'm not particularly bothered.

They've probably been cutting out the pages you did read anon, so only irrelevant ones are left.

There are only two things players buy books for: player races and subclass options.
DMs aren't much different, except they'll also pay for monster statblocks.

So long as the books have those three things, people will keep buying them.

It's a pretty stupid comment. No, that's not why DMs buy books. We want the setting, the adventures, and the new rules. Specifically, regarding OP, we bought Spelljammer because we wanted rules for Spelljamming. And we didn't fricking get them and we're pissed.

very very far, they're playing the long game, they're low key compelling more DMs to step up and empower their own game, they're swimming around in the shark tank now baby, eventually they will only sell fluffy lore books, with charts and tables full of suggested characters to play in your games.

That's a choice for each consumer. I pre-ordered the special edition of Spelljammer. I'm done with WotC, 100%.

Spelljammer didn't even have any lore. It had garbage, shit, and an ok adventure.

SCAG is hated because the content in it was fricking trash. Also the sword coast is the least interesting part of any setting WotC owns.

There's this youtuber who has made hundreds of lore videos for official dnd settings and shit, I think he's a full time "content creator".
I saw the title and thumbnail for his latest video. "Playing a D&D setting with a different system?", and a picture of him looking at numenera.
Funny shit. Someone who made it their job to talk about dnd lore realising that zakhara isn't coming back and just accepting the reality of playing another game in the setting he likes.

The other day I ran into a video of a "d&d content creator" seething because people keep telling him to play other games, even though 80% of his videos are about his complaints with 5e.

Found him. He's b***hing about Pathfinder specifically, but I don't think it matters too much. I was clearly off the mark when I said 80% of his videos are complaints about 5e, but he still has a good number of them (the video released before this one is literally titled "Has Dungeons & Dragons 5e FAILED DMs?" and has a big "WE'RE TIRED OF FIXING YOUR GAME" text on the thumbnail). He also seems to make sure to cover whatever the latest twitter D&D drama is, with pic related being his latest video.

he has a good point right away, why would you ask your players to buy a new set of books you don't know you'll actually keep playing with?
and he's spot on about the "have you tried not playing dnd" people look like a bunch of babyback b***hes.

                >why would you ask your players to buy a new set of books you don't know you'll actually keep playing with?
Because nobody at the table has to own a single book to play any game. In the case of Pathfinder, it's all free online.
                >inb4 "b-b-but learning new rulezz!"
The players don't have to know the rules. Ask them what their character does, help them resolve it. Simple as.

The rules to 5e are better than the rules to 3.xpf. Hands-down. Claim otherwise and be forever wrong. If you'd said the 80s or 90s, you'd have a point. WotC has been a shitshow from the moment they bought D&D, and 5e started out as a chance to bring it back to being D&D, so a lot of us older players had a lot of hope. And the new Ravenloft is genuinely the best D&D adventure ever written, so our hopes were vindicate. Spelljammer is a frick up on a massive scale, though.

      Lmao.
The 5e rules have better scaling than 3.5, and it's nice to be able to get Dex to damage in melee. The movement and action rules are better. Literally everything else is worse.
      >curse of Strahd
      >better than anything
Cringe. Ravenloft is a cringe setting in general. Just a ripoff of irl culture with muh HECKIN epic vampires. And yes, I've played the module.

        Anonymous

        >And yes, I've played the module
Your DM must be garbo. Read it. It's literally the best written D&D adventure.
        >Literally everything else is worse.
So just the rules for attributes, movement and actions are better. Got it. So the core of gameplay is better and by "worse" what you really mean is "it doesn't have in-depth shit-tons of rules for every little possible situation." Which is good.

          >So just the rules for attributes, movement and actions are better.
That isn't what I said, homosexual. I said Dex to damage in melee is nice. The attribute rules are fricked up because they are bloated with all bonuses and no penalties and you can easily get 20 in a stat by level 8 if not sooner. They could have at least made ASIs be +1 to two different scores but that doesn't satisfy muh instant gratification so they didn't.

The endgame is a "ruleset" that's more like a branding bible for streamers and a bunch of novels, artbooks, and travel guides centered around whatever's popular among the streamers.

We can tell this is endgame because we're about 95% of the way there already.

Well, there's a skeleton crew at WotC like pretty much every TTRPG company. It's kind of weird too, because they could probably just republish 2E lore books updated to 5E and make quite a bit of money. It's already kind of proven that this works because some of the most popular third party works for 5E are a wizards of thay book and a rashemon book.
