I'm pretty sure animation and character design will be the least of this movie's problems. The studio hasn't made anything of note since the first Despicable Me.

Maybe we just don't like it? The design is very close to Mario's actual design but off in just enough places to feel uncanny. If it were more unique then the differences could be chalked up to style, not a failed attempt to match Perfect Mario. The toads are way worse.
