Making a few keyframe changes to try and pass it off as their own won't save them.

if you like janky action rpgs you will definitely like this game, the game world is everything dark souls 3 wanted to do but better.
but don't go in thinking it's a souls clone, there is no i-frames so you have to use the jump and crouch buttons against some attacks.
the controller support is fricked but it controls well with a kb+m after some adjusting.
the hate this game is getting is from myazaki cultists, the game definitely deserve criticism but these drones are running a campaign against the game.

Hah, no it ain't. Hellpoint is a janky action RPG. The Surge 1/2 are janky action RPGs. Bleak Faith isn't just janky, it's borderline unplayably bad.

Hellpoint and the surge series are both good, bleak is the first janky action rpg i play with kb+m and i am undefeatable, just readjust the jump button and that's about it.

Commenting on the image only: Hidetaka was clearly inspired by Hayaos work. Bleak Faiths' case is different, for what evidence has been displayed in this thread, it looks like they blatanly copy-pasted other peoples work.
The whole ArchAngel Studios seems a little suspicious, for there is almost no information other than their facebook page, and for that reason I don't quite buy the three person dev team thing. That might be a lie to gain sympathy from reviewers and potential customers, which it has managed to do.
There is also the possiblity of what

They're obviously the same animations, but how do you know that both companies just didn't purchase the same animations from a 3rd party?

mentioned, but I doubt that a 350+ person studio would need to buy animations from a third party, especially given the performances of their previous titles.

TLDR: Bleak seems like copy-pasted, Elder Ring was inspired by anime. ArchAngel Studios seems suspicious.

There's freely available tools for ripping models, animations etc directly from the souls games. It's extremely easy and what modders/dataminers use.

They've literally ripped some of the animations and just applied them to their own character meshes, 1:1. Baffles me that they thought no one would notice. Bandai could absolutely frick them if they wanted to.

The animations were probably manually recreated, and it'd be very hard to prove otherwise. You can't copyright the idea of an animation any more than you can copyright a chord progression.

        Anonymous

Not at all, they even replicate flaws, which wouldn't happen with a manual recreation

          it's a retargeted animation anon
          just plain theft

It would still be a manual recreation even if they downloaded and ripped the elden ring models, skeletons and animations and recreated them by making identical skeletons and replicating all the keyframes by typing in the bone coordinates. As long as they didn't copy and paste it they'd be legally fine.

Same as shitlibs following democrats. The figurehead espouses the righteous mantras about troonrights etc., and thus they are followed.

There are politics that are not based in religious belief, but liberalism is quite literally just a morality cult with specific dogmas.

They're obviously the same animations, but how do you know that both companies just didn't purchase the same animations from a 3rd party?

      Anonymous

basic logic rules this out. If these animations existed in a pre-das3 generic animation pack, they'd be everywhere and used in other games before DaS3/ER came out. But they clearly in-house FS animations made for their characters.

Now it IS possible some third worlder ripped these souls animations and put them in a package on the unreal store or other asset stores, passing them off as their own to make money (this shit happens all the time, ive worked professionally for a few studios as a 3D artist). If thats the case though, the devs would clearly know that these are FS assets that they've bought, and would just be purposely playing dumb if they try and say "we didn't know they were stolen animations".

        >I've never noticed anyone using similar animations therefore they aren't from an asset pack
You don't know anything. You're guessing, as I am. Do you believe that a company would work on a game for years only to have it removed from sale due to a copyright strike on an animation?

Looking at Elden Ring credits it looks like they have a lot of animators working for it. Almost all of them worked on previous FromSoftware titles and a few are new and only worked on ER.
It would make a lot ore sense that these animators worked on these animation instead of a third party.

          >Do you believe that a company would work on a game for years only to have it removed from sale due to a copyright strike on an animation?
This is the same team that let their pirated windows copy slip into their official trailer, so yes I do believe they're capable of being this dumb.

Indeed, they're clearly in-house animations made by FS themselves. Using pre-made animations in a FS title would be a nightmare anyway, due to how they have the timing for attacks/actions nailed down to per-frame data.

You can only remove products for things that infringe your copyright. Bandai has never put their copyright on game mechanics or even the way bosses move so bleak faith is completely immune to legal claims.

Basically, you can only claim infringement on things you specifically put your trademark on.

It's very hard to pursue claims for shit like this in court because even minor changes will make a judge throw your lawsuit out the window. Honestly surprised WB even did this but they are Hollywood so extra scummy even for a corporation.

To be fair, Genshin didn't outright steal anything. Several characters have a couple of moves that are inspired by Vergil but also broadly fit the whole iaijutsu anime meme, it's not like they just have one character with all his moves with animations ripped from DMC4.

Do you listen to something with a sample and think "omg this is outagreous, have they even got permission to do that???"

          Anonymous

Well that's the thing, it is generally assumed that someone using a sample has in fact gotten permission.

As a listener with no vested interest, I never even consider it. If someone told me a tune I liked was using a sample without permission, I would shrug and carry on as if nothing happened. iN fact I would assume that most random small-fry EDM producers are not going thorugh the full legal route.

Sampling is actually pretty legally complex and getting clearance to use a sample is standard practice, but in reality most artists only really give a shit if the song using their sample is commercially successful. Artists can and have been sued for using a sample without permission.

IIRC, KMFDM once got into a lawsuit over a sample, and had to permanently remove it from a song of theirs.

And even if they do, can't the devs just modify small details in the animation, like slightly change the angle or speed of some attacks, and then just call it "original asset"?

          Anonymous

If we stick to the sampling comparison (which isn't super applicable but whatever), it has to be basically unrecognizable to get away with it. And the fact that people twigged onto it nearly instantly (especially with the Abyss Watcher enemy) throws that out the window.

            Anonymous

I don't see how that could be applicable to video games, that'd be a nightmare, imagine a company owning a weapon combo and no one else can use it.

              Anonymous

it's not really a problem because most developers just make their own animations, and most if not all lazy asset flips don't get NEARLY enough attention to actually attract the notice of the larger publishers they're stealing from.

Even if there are only so many ways to swing a sword, you're still not going to come up with the EXACT SAME animation every time unless you just copypaste them.

              Anonymous

It's pretty easy to copy an animation without outright stealing it, and since with how the process of how animation rigs are made and set up, you can easily prove when something isn't just straight up stolen or at least so heavily altered that it's provably transformative. The best case scenario of what happened was a pajeet ripped animation files from Dark Souls 3, Elden Ring, etc (which is pretty easy to do thanks to datamining/modding tools that were released with the intent of porting assets from older From games to newer ones), slapped them on a default Unreal body, and made a bunch of different animation packs that were put up on the asset store for Unreal and because it's a random small animation pack no one bothered to report it until now, and before it got reported the Bleak Faith devs downloaded it and used it and were too moronic to notice how similar some of these animations are despite spending so much time rigging the models.

I-rori isn't a studio but instead a company that hosts artists, animators, etc who get contracted to other companies that hire them - they've worked with Squeenix, NitroPlus, etc.

It's not easy at all. They would have to prove that they are literally exactly the same files straight from Elden Ring, and good luck doing that after they've been ripped and imported and re-exported multiple times.

No they don't, they just have to show how they're obviously identical, and how you can change formats and adjust bones to explain any differences.
You can get away with stealing animations if you change them sufficiently, but not when the thing doesn't pass the fricking eyeball test and it has very little variance between the og and the edited rip.

Everyone who has played a Souls game recognizes that katana swing and the incredibly distinct Artorias overhand flip swing. Souls games are literally built around studying animations to learn how to react to them

        Anonymous

Except you can't copyright flipping and even if they intentionally recreated exactly the same flip frame by frame, the plaintiffs would still have no case unless they can prove that they are literally derived from the same file as the original animation. The 1s and 0s that constitute the game data is copyrighted material, but the motions of an animation are not protected by copyright

You Black folk keep saying this and not realizing sequenced movements are choreography which is 100% copyrightable. Epic couldn't even use this defense in the lawsuits about them using popular dances that ARE copyrighted, they just financially strained any plaintiffs until they were forced to settle out of court or go bankrupt. And one of them, Kyle Hanagami, is still pursuing litigious action.

Except in the law that allows choreography to be copyrighted material, they explicitly explain that individual motions are not copyrightable. It'd have to be something like an entire dance routine copied verbatim.

                >they explicitly explain that individual motions are not copyrightable
You're correct that individual motions are not copyrightable, but these aren't just individual motions. These are full-on sequences of choreography with weapon swings and elaborate poses, and in animation it's even more easy to copyright choreography since every single part of it is intentional and choreographed. IRL you can't copyright your jacket or something swinging around from a dance move, but you easily could use that as part of a copyright for an animation of someone dancing.

You know, that's arguable enough that it might genuinely be worth going to trial to settle it. Unfortunately, it'll be in an American court which means the richer side will win.

cut the shit. if you could just rip animations from other games, upload them to Epic's Marketplace via a VPN, and then download them to put in your own game under the guise of having gotten tricked into paying for stolen assets, that shit would be happening all over the fricking industry. ESPECIALLY in fighting games and Soulslikes. these devs are got caught, it's frickin' over. either they bought stolen assets on purpose, or they're too moronic to recognize stolen assets because they don't actually *play* games from the genre they're aping.

Instead he made up 15 different excuses before settling on "b-but Miyazaki didn't hand-craft these animations themselves so it's okay" and basically admittedto just using stolen assets meaning he's a spineless homosexual and also socially moronic, so he warrants the humiliation.

He can't even do that because the animations he used are so absurdly distinct that anyone who's ever played a Souls game recognizes them instantly, and he made a Souls clone game. There is no plausible way that he wouldn't recognize one of the most distinct attack animations from one of the most well known bosses in the franchise that people liked so much that it was then transferred to the player's moveset when they get his sword for all three games it's in and even one it isn't in

    Patch notes from today's update

-Locked FPS to 90FPS maximum, 60 FPS default (and recommended).
-Controllers default binding after reading feedback. (If you can't properly reset to default setting, try deleting C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataLocalForsakenSavedSaveGamesSettingsGamepad.sav)
-Giants no longer deal 100% of players health, instead deal set damage, which can be further mitigated by your armor.
-Removed start animations from unarmed movement to reduce impulse on initial movement.
-Redesigned the climbing section in the Monastery as it was causing issues.
-Improved readability of some areas in the Monastery with slight changes to map layout.
    -Other smaller changes.

it's really not, just the lack of an iframe dogeroll makes it unique enough imo

    >literally rip off not only abyss watchers movesets, but have the exact same armor design
    >"btw we are not even influenced by souls"
this is what is so despicable about these roaches, just like how they conducted their awful awful shilling here on Ganker
every fricking one replied to their threads calling out the shills and instead of owning up to him honorably, they doubled down with the lying and denying
profoundly dishonest, scummy team of third world plagiarist scammers

and what this really highlights is the mindset of third worlders and why everyone hates them, serbs pajeets chinks all the same

what it highlights is how low IQ they are because they can't even understand consequences of action, the notion of bad reputation and burning bridges, instead if they had frontran the accusations by admitting to the stealing or the shilling, the souls loving community would have understand and given them a chance because >muh 2 devs

even if you're only in it to make money, being honest and virtuous and apologetic with your audience instead of trying to falsify and scam them is often the most profitable strategy, you keep seeing that with small flawed indie devs becoming cult classics simply because the devs behaved honorably, but that's something you repeatedly see third worlders unable to grasp, scamming and fricking each other over is all they know

it's not about the product being shit, it's in their behavior and cultural DNA

So... I've played around one hour and a half of it, Pirated of course
I've opened like 3 shortcuts to the starting area

+The art direction is really carrying the whole experience, it's really fricking cool for what they could manage to do with it, medieval architecture + dystopic city hyper structure it's great
+Exploration and world design are really fricking nice, they did their homework, it feels rewarding and mysterious
+Tone and atmosphere is okay, but it still feels like typical unreal game

it kinda feels like playing EYE divine Cybermancy

-The combat is ass, I can't take it, Thymesia has far better combat, there's too much "weight" on what should be fluid combat
-The jank, jesus it's so fricking janky, the jumping, the strafing, the the camera handles in action is very uncomfortable, the way collision works is like random and out of place
-the menus and interface are strapped poorly

I mean they can patch it and polish it, but this is no way to deliver a game, the combat is really essential, I wish I could play this on the Elden Ring engine, unironically

now, I can levy a lot of complaints about their game development practices, but that's absurd
one of the biggest issues in Souls games is that the assets are so god damned hard coded that modding a souls game is a fricking nightmare, it's all spaghetti, up and down

Yeah, the guys that have been using the same sound effects library since fricking King's Field are the same ones outsourcing all their work on every new project to a bunch of unrelated contractors.
Random dudes in India just happened to submit them the same dog rigging and attack animations that have appeared in their last five fricking games.

Well for one, he claims that From rely on "thousands of contracted artists" when Elden Ring only had TWO outside animators contribute.
So the whataboutism falls flat basically immediately.

    If this game was:
    >Properly polished
    >QA tested
    >Had used its own assets
    >Had a proper art and design team

It could have been a great game, but instead we get this janky mess with a game world that is interesting, even if only because it is clearly inspired by Blame!
So my take on this is:
    >I'm glad that I pirated
    >I probably won't waste any more time in it
    >Lets hope that From Software someday makes a Blame! inspired Souls game.
