they are at liberty to not learn the language they are translating from and instead make it all up on the spot (it is being culturally translated)

In fairness that was what happened to all old roman artefacts in Europe too. People would find ancient roman gold and melt it down and destroy neolithic monuments for walls.

So like Europeans did after the reformation.

Do you even know the context behind? You do realize these "cultures" didn't give a shit and the only reason the artifacts were found, preserved and given the value and recognition they deserve thanks to european autism? You are aware that if the autochtones had found them they would have been destroyed forever, right?

Museums are a means to experience cultures without having to go across the planet or use a time machine.

The real question is why did it take a bunch of Europeans to dig this stuff up, study their cultures, translate their languages, etc?

Nobody in Egypt gave a single fuck about those giant pyramids and those weird picture languages until Europeans came and studied them.

Translators should be hanged, if you want to read in another language you should have to learn it rather than letting someone hand you a version of it raped into unrecognizability

I don't know, but I know liberties that shouldn't be taken, such as historical revisionism in a game that's meant to be accurate, or revisionism purely for the sake of "diversity and inclusion", but I guess this is obvious.

As much as it takes to maintain the prose style/verse metre. Dante used Terza Rima in his Comedy, the translator should try to emulate that
Video game prose/dialogue is usually simple and there's little reason to take creative liberties beyond having a politics brainrot

It should only be localized if it cannot be parsed in another language.

This is broader than it sounds; translating one joke to another similar one, or a congruent turn of phrase is appropriate.

The thing that should be avoided is "good ideas", because there has never been value added by an individual translator deciding a meme, joke or bit should be inserted into their translation.
