They kind of already are no shot you're playing whatever's on that disk.

There was a brief period when companies experimented with shipping empty boxes but it didn't work, it was a mental thing. People when to a real store and exchanging money for a box 'need' to get something real (even though they're happy to just get a code for steam).

next gen for sure. sony's apparently PS5 slim will have a separate disc drive attachment and presumably the next gen we won't even get that. microsoft will go all in on game pass and probably never release another actual console.

I stopped buying discs not because I don't like physical media but because I had to fricking download the game anyways. Gone are the days of just putting the game in and playing.

Only if you buy Microsoft and Sony garbage. I can't believe you "people" still do this and haven't moved on to a PC or Switch.

Why would you want the OLED version? Also they've been saying "Switch Pro" for like 6 years now. What's crazy about Nintendo hardware is that it doesn't devalue like other hardware so you'd be able to sell it back.

its not the slim, just a new sku that will become the one and only sku going forward. Sony doesn't want to have the disc and non disc option, they want one SKU and if you want a disc drive you can buy it separately for an additional fee.

        Anonymous

This makes sense. Also I'm pretty sure you can backup your games if you want to, so the whole idea of you not being able to keep your games goes out the window. The only argument at that point is you just want to have a shelf with cases you can look at. I also think the Xbox has the option for backups too.

Far behind what? You still need physical hardware for storage. You literally need an external HDD or SSD on GayStation and Gaybox since every game is a bloated 100GB mess. The Switch uses MicroSD cards, but very few games go beyond 30GB. An all digital future is only something lazy morons want.

But don't you see? The answer is RIGHT THERE. They can sell little 50-100 GB versions of those little Seagate SSDs that have one (1) game on them, you can laser engrave the logo of the game somewhere, or print some shit on the plastic, and you can probably sell it in a little cassette tape sized case. Think about it.

      >You get the fast loading times of digital, freed up space on your console's hard drive and the entire game on there with no downloads because they can fit the whole thing onto the SSD easily
      >Microsoft is happy because they don't have to pay Sony royalties for printing their games on Blu-Ray
      >Their marketing will be into it because after a generation of homogenisation, they now have a completely unique iconography and user experience
      >Black folk, Methheads and your trashy cousins are happy because these games are now much harder to damage by just having them lying around the loungeroom, ie they can flip last year's Madden for weed much easier, which goes back into retailers loving it

in a perfect world this would be a thing but in our moron clown world even if they did something like that they would probably charge out the ass for it.
they dont want you owning physical media, they want you to stream everything so they can control the tides of media and what you are exposed to.

Nobody's doing it because they're fricking expensive out the ass compared to printing discs

Obviously physical media is something these "people" wanna phase out, obviously we're in clown world, but if we can continue with the Perfect World scenario, Sony's strategy of being a loss leader with any new medium seems to work out pretty well for them, like the Blu-Ray with the PlayStation. You could print them in increments of USB sizes roughly (16, 32, 64, 128) and start by selling successful smaller indy games for a really good price to ease people into the experience of actually taking the thing home and putting it in. And with the actual guts of it being that small to start with, you might not even be selling at a loss. Of course you can ramp it up as time goes on.

Just use MicroSD cards.... We are at $60 for 1TB. People are so genuinely fricking moronic that they think these Microsoft branded cards are a good deal.

              Anonymous

That would be the better idea obviously, but of course Microsoft would want the new medium they co-created. And they're not even going to do that.

              Anonymous

That's just the retail price for a microSD card. You can have much cheaper flash storage media. You can also make it a lot less expensive, by removing the controller from the storage device and make it a part of the console. Not saying they've done it, but it could be a thing for the next generation.
Since they're trying to kill phyiscal media though, making all consoles digital only seems like the more likely scenario.

They'll probably disappear eventually for gaming, though they'll hold on longer then you'd think as getting a blu ray worth of data to somebody is cheaper then then downloading it in a lot of places.
In general they'll still exist when you're old and dying. You can still buy floppy disks manufactured in 2023, and Tape storage is still one of the best ways to store things long term.

  23. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

They might as well not exist. At this point if you buy the physical version you're being cucked hard. Granted you are still able to share games, or resell them (though I'd argue being able to resell games only matters if it wasn't a good game to begin with). But now you need to swap discs to play the game, and hopefully nothing happens to the disc. Nowadays the disc is just a 1.0 version that has to be installed anyways. Sure, it can technically be ran without internet, or when the servers eventually go down, but given modern gaming, would it really be worth it? Playing the buggy, day zero version of the game (not to mention some don't even ship the whole game without a day one patch), hoping there wasn't any decent downloadable content, and still being at the mercy of a plastic disc?
Honestly have to laugh at the game preservation people who pretend physical is worth a damn for "preservation" efforts. Can't tell if they're moronic, or simply don't want to piss off their corporate overlords by mentioning emulation.

The only reason to use the disc drive on the current consoles is if you have previous gen games you want to play. I can tell you right now that all of the PS5 games I've bought physically so far just force you to download the entire game off the internet anyways, and for MK11 Ultimate you don't even get the game, it's only the base game and you have to redeem a dlc coupon to upgrade to Ultimate that will then be downloaded. And it's fricking loud despite not using the disc.

I believe the big reason why anyone is still using discs at all on the PS5 and XBox Series X is because of the "idea" that they own the game they paid for. Of course, today we have the option to back our games up and go from there, and like you mentioned games are still by and large downloaded from the internet anyway. Basically I agree with you that, unless you have a console that plays last gen games, there's no real purpose for this anymore.

The reason why digital games stay at the same MSRP as physical is because it's part of actual regulation within the entertainment industry to not frick over physical retailers. If digital copies were even 10% cheaper across the board then nobody would ever go buy a boxed copy ever again (which is what was happening to the used games market until companies like EA and Ubisoft began pushing out those online passes, a bit of ancient history for you), so both forms of distribution are treated with the same value up front to ensure they can co-exist.

Yes but only because the disc version is even more scarce. It's literally the cope purchase

    >how much longer before discs just cease to exist
That's the day I quit vidya and I'll stick to that principle
What's next a gym that you pay membership for but can't go in?
This shit would not fly in other business models.
