How should I approach jobs in this game?

The sheer number the game throws at me gives me some heavy "paradox of choice" vibes.

Is this like FF6 where every character will eventually get the spells of every summon naturally (In this case, max every class), or should I instead choose what classes level in each character because I'm looking for an specific build?

no, that only happens if you grind

you can do jank builds and still get away with it. the game isn't excessively punishing

        Control can be incredibly useful

I feel like it misses 90% of the time.

Try not using it on bosses, newb.

              I'm talking about regular enemies.
I feel like it has the same issue as the control rod that Relm could use in FF6: Most of the time it's better to just kill the mobs normally instead.

              >That would be it?
For most of the game yes, but near the end you'll want to have yourself set up to use freelancer and mime. The idea is when you master a class both freelancer and mime inherit its passives AND its stats. So in the beginning just level a class to get a skill you need and then otherwise ignore it, and then work on mastering classes that give passives/stats you really want (every character benefits from mastering thief no matter what).

I'm mostly basing myself on "cool rule", but "cool rule" things tend to also be strong.

Control is useful in very, very specific situations to learn blue magic. It's a hyper-situational job that has very low flexibility, which could have been merged with something else.

I only used beastmaster as a way to control monsters to learn blue magic and nothing else.

Beastmaster doesnt have a pet with strong attacks so its just a controller mage

Pick whatever looks cool to you. Jesus christ try having fun for once instead of autistically min/maxing everything.

Well, the objective IS to have fun, though.
Which is why I'm asking if I should be swapping jobs all the time or max one before going for others.

It doesn't matter. Just try shit out and use what you like.

There is only one "meta" thing to consider that the game doesn't tell you, which is that when you master a class that character permanently has the base stats of it IF they're higher than what they currently have.

So if for example you master a class and its base speed is higher than the character's base speed they will permanently inherit that class' base speed. What this means is if you have a character level a class that has the highest strength/stamina/magic/speed in the game, they will permanently have the highest of that stat that they can have for the rest of the game.

Other than that you can do whatever the frick you want and it doesn't matter.

Essentially your choices for each character are
    >1h weapon and shield
    >2h
    >dual-wielding
    >magic
    Not that complicated

I ask this because I did the ship and castle dungeons while still in classes from the first crystals (Knight, Thief, Black Mage and Blue Mage) because I thought they maxxed at lvl 5

First jobs get lot of time and jp to master specially black and white mage

          So, basically:
          >level enough to get the skill you want
          >swap jobs

          That would be it?

On a side note: Is poison busted in this game? It simply DESTROYED Byblos.

            yea more or less
there's a bunch of broken combos but you can mostly just go with what you enjoy playing for most of the game

why don't you just play it? you're probably the only one here who didn't play it blind. also every boss in the game has a party wipe ability no matter how strong you are. being tactical out weighs "meta" builds

Once again: I don't care about meta.
I do, however, care about knowing how the game works.

Not knowing that weapons had active skills in FF4 made my early game experience less enjoyable, for instance.

Not him but I think it makes the game a lot more fun knowing exactly how freelancer/mime works going into the game. That's about the only thing I think is worth explaining though.

Boss cant party wipe if you use the dps dual wield build in all party members not even omega saves feom that besides rng bullshit in the fight

Classes max at level 7, and its actually fine to put a lot of effort into the first set of classes because two of them give you access to three out of four of the highest stats in the entire game (monk for strength and stamina, thief for agility)

there are ultimate weapons for each class, and limited end game armors. you don't want to double up on classes.

Just max out classes and pick out which one you want to play the most or cheese the game.
