It's not possible to feasibly beat Red at the level you would naturally be at upon unlocking Mt. Silver regardless of the weakness system existing. Super effective hits deal minimal damage to his mons, and they generally one shot you. The only way to beat him is to either ground on extremely underlevelled mons for 100 hours, or abuse the level 70 legendaries and try to abuse Toxic stall strats(which some of his mons can still counter, and requires full restore/revive spam every turn).

Anon if you play like a dumb kid it's easy. Only ever use your starter pokemon and every single pokemon game is a breeze. You end up so over leveled there is no challenge. I remember doing that against red when I was like 10 years old, even if the entire second half of the game after the elite 4 is trainers with only level 40-50 pokemon you still get power leveled and whoop his ass.

Even easier if you just use a full restore occasionally.

This is a raw time investment which I just don't see as reasonable. The level you end up at after beating Green is what you get.
              >Curselax literally solo the whole thing
Possibly reasonable. You get Snorlax at level 50 though, so I would be surprised if it can survive the special attacks from his team even after setting up.

              >DUDE THIS IS THE HARDEST BOSS EVER YOU ARE LITERALLY NOT PREPARED FOR THIS LEVEL OF SETUP HE WILL DESTROY YOU

This did not happen. You either misremember, or more likely are lying because it would be embarrassing to admit to struggling with a fight in a Pokémon game due to their repuation.

          Which mons in particular?

Anon if you play like a dumb kid it's easy. Only ever use your starter pokemon and every single pokemon game is a breeze. You end up so over leveled there is no challenge. I remember doing that against red when I was like 10 years old, even if the entire second half of the game after the elite 4 is trainers with only level 40-50 pokemon you still get power leveled and whoop his ass.

Even easier if you just use a full restore occasionally.

I don't consider powerlevelling your starter a valid way to play the game, but even then I'm skeptical this would hold up against Red. Even if you surpass him in level, you're going to get wienerblocked by a type disadvantage. Feraligatr Ice Punch isn't one-shotting Venusaur.

Snorlax have 110 base SP def, he can sit his fat arse in front of pikachu, setup and rest if really needed.

Rest of team can't even dent a curselax with leftovers.

Espeon for example has 130 SpAtk, with a ~13 level advantage its Psychic is going to do serious damage.

This is a mathematical issue, not one of simple motor skill like those platformers. The plausibility of proposed scenarios against Red can be empirically checked.

There is little to no room for "skill" in Gen 2 Pokémon battles. You just act out the flowchart and it either works or it doesn't.
              >you're blowing up shit most people beat as children
It's very likely most people did not beat Red. It's just one of those things much easier to believe than the secret legendaries and areas and such that they also reportedly experienced as kids.

Gen 2 mons have horrendous learnsets so you don't get epic builds like this and you will get raped in one or two turns. I don't see how you can realistically set up on Red.

For the record, HGSS Red is a completely different thing. While theoretically stronger, the context of Gen 4 allows for far more ways to cope with the level gap, between abilities, EVs, far better learnsets, and so on, as well as the game having content to allow you to reach a higher level more easily without killing wild Pokémon in their 30s for a year. GSC Red is simply 20+ levels higher than anything else in the game, there is no way to close the gap and no strats to cope. I really don't think typical cheese strats can even win this fight, I personally just gave up on it last time I played Crystal a few years back after exploring all options.

Red's team is made up of shitmons. What makes Red scary is that one of his pokemon isn't, Snorlax is the most popular non-legendary pokemon in GSC. You can clear everything else reasonably but Snorlax will be a headache.
    Pikachu? Deadweight.
    Zard? Rocks. Water. It's shit.
    Venusaur? You likely chose Typhlosion.
    Blastoise? Electric types.
Espeon? Mediocre. Cucked by Dark types.
It's only really Snorlax that's a b***h to face. And it can Rest too. You got any decent Fighting types Anon? If not you can try nerfing its bulk with moves like Screech.

      >In Generations I-III, some badges boost a certain stat or stats of the player's Pokémon. This boost is applied only in internal battles, not link battles. In Generations I and II, the stat or stats are increased by 12.5%
      >In Generation II, every badge boosts the power of the moves of a certain type by 12.5% (1/8), despite never being referenced in the games. The type strengthened matches the type theme of the Gym (for example, Zephyr Badge boosts the Flying type); despite the Viridian Gym no longer having a type theme in Generation II, the Earth Badge boosts Ground-type moves.
You will actually have some strong advantages over Red or any other AI trainer, hence why you can win underlevelled

Games are completely stacked towards player, there is a reason that most hacks remove ton of perks or at least ensure you can't just spam revives or other craps.

Use X items. You can have a team of shitmons and be dozens of levels under him and still steal a win if you're willing to use items. The power of money is the strongest force in pokemon games. There's very little you can't beat with quadrupled stats and pikachu seems almost designed to let you set up on him.

Let's be real though, it's not a proper way to play the game.

Oh obviously not. Nothing actually requires X item spam in normal play, but if you suck ass it's a near guaranteed win.
I have to imagine they made them so strong so that 5 year olds could still win even if their favorites were weak, but they forgot to teach players that stat boosting is good actually so a lot of kids ignore them. Kind of wild that x items got buffed to double strength in gen 7. They really really didn't need that.

This was such a weird jump in difficulty in this game. The rest of the game was piss easy which is unfortunate cuz the world design, pokemon design, music, graphics and quantity were all great. People meme about that cow girl being hard but I first tried her without any issue and top 4 was also an easy first try in comparison to gen 1. And then suddenly you have red whos pokemon are like 20 levels above yours. Annoyingly theres this dark labyrinth before the fight too so you either have to waste an attack slot for that lighting move or check the internet to navigate it whenever you wanna go back. Unfortunately i deleted the emulator for reasons i dont remember so i havent beat him

kek, you guys do raise a good point. However, it's not like you need an utterly OP team like this one to pull it off. Here's one I used a few years ago that performed well also.

I recognized those were Gold sprites. How'd you handle the trade evos? how long did it take to level up tyranitar and dragonite?

I use an obscure fork of VBA that doesn't support trading between generation 2 games, so I had to port my save over to mGBA whenever I wanted to link them together. A bit annoying, but the trading worked seamlessly. As for Ttar and Dragonite, it took a pretty good while. Basically I'd hop on for 30 mins to an hour each day and grind the Elite Four a bit. Worth it seeing as I'll be taking these guys over to Stadium.

              >how long did it take to grind up houndoom?
Not long at all. Trainers in Kanto use very low-leveled Pokemon because the devs intended for you to keep adding to your party even after clearing the league. It evolves super early, too, and aside from that, it's just a fricking monster in these games. As for Skarmory, Fly is perfectly fine for in-game fights, and Drill Peck can be bred onto it if you want it. It's also superb as a Toxic staller.

When I first played against him, I was pretty dumb kid back then and only leveled starter, Fearaligatr. He was something around 80 or like that. Also brought Snorlax and some wild Magmar captured at 50 or something, all because I considered wild leveling to be too slow.
