    Get lucky

some dude beat the game on hard never pausing like 25 times in a row.

        Anonymous

He got lucky, and that's not to take away from his work, he needed luck to learn to do that in the first place. You could just get dogshit runs and learn nothing from hours of gameplay, that is possible.

          Anonymous

That doesn't make any sense, the entire point of games like these is learning how to avoid dog shit runs

This would only happen if you're clicking buttons at random like an ape (or you're a sub 70 IQ brainlet).

he got lucky playing on hard doing a self imposed challenge run 25 times in a row?
I know you're just being retarded on purpose but I'm still mad.

did he use the default ship and shit?

pretty sure he rotated ships can't remember. it's dolphinchemist on twitch. I don't even know if he's still the WR holder. my friend just told me about it because we used to play FTL and talk on mic together before he died

    Know when to retreat.
In the early game, before you've had a chance to upgrade there are certain enemy ships that if you encounter them you have to just bail as soon as possible.

      Anonymous

I'd argue that you should only retreat when it's absolutely necessary. I feel like you need a lot of scrap to keep up and you want every chance for a lucky weapon drop.

Advice I would add it that if you're totally agree from damage (like having more shields than they can penetrate) you should take the time to kill the crew rather than destroy the ship. You get more resources by looting an intact ship.

Just invade ships if you want an easy win
is easier than blowing up the ship
gives you more options when slavers / events
gives you a shitton of resources
makes the final boss a joke as long as you don't kill everyone

No, as long as there's one crew left the AI won't kick in.

Are you talking about easy and normal or do you do that on hard as well even with the change to ship design? That's what I meant. Because if you're giving tips only relevant on non-hardmode then who cares

            Anonymous

Does the final boss change in non hard difficulties?
didn't even know never touched them

              Anonymous

The weapons rooms are isolated on easy and normal, making it simple to leave one weapons guy alive. On hard every room is connected, meaning if there's a fight or a fire everyone will leave their post. The final boss goes from a piece of cake to very difficult if you're relying on leaving one guy alive

                Anonymous

only the laser and missile are connected, so you can leave the right side guy alive and only have the AI active in the final phase.
Generally you do want to kill most of the crew anyways since most of them teleport over to you ship for the final phase anyways.

Keep playing. Seriously. I felt like I would never get better either, but something clicks after you put 10 or so hours in. Eventually, you start learning the encounters, you know where the traps could be, how to move your ship around the sector, how to manage your gas/resources, how to effectively use combat, etc. The one thing that really helped me early on was to look up a few videos to see which weapons were good and which to avoid. Twin Laser is good, and Halberd beam is also good. You can rely on those pretty heavily until you get your first win.

      Do NOT do this

  8. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Stealth ship and target the enemy crew with missiles while investing heavily in shields and anything that can mitigate damage. Keep the enemy crew as disoriented as possible while avoiding as much damage to yourself as you can. Targetting tbe enemy oxygen can help with this too.

  9. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

The Zoltan ship is fucking awful, the beam works fine for the first sector but getting the damage output to be able to win fights later on is pure luck.

      Anonymous

those Zoltan shields are top tier. Mitigating missiles is a big deal. Get your dodge rate up

      Anonymous

what are you talking about, the beam they start with is one of the best volley finishers in the entire game
just get multi-hit weapons for your other slots and you have a build that shits all over everything including the final boss

      Giant spiders are no joke
      holy crap

  13. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Learn which random encounters are worth the risk and which aren't (giant spiders and mad survivor on a moon are never worth it without blue options). Understand what you want your ship to be, make sure it stacks up against the end boss. If not, plan something else.

In combat see if the enemy ship can actually damage your ship. Hull integrity = money. If your ship has enough shields/countermeasures to just sit there do your utmost to kill the crew. Burn them, board them, choke them out by not letting their Oxygen Generator work. An intact ship gives you more loot than a wrecked one.

If you cannot just ignore the enemy ship's damage output (usually due to them having shields), just fuck up their weapons, their shields and their pilot/engine rooms. Order may vary depending on ship (again, you need to make the decision yourself) Remember to switch up the rooms you fire at if you can allow it. No point hammering a red shield room when the pilot and weapons are still operational.

It's always an important thing to invest into defensive tools as quickly as possible. Cloaking is a must on most ships, especially since the augment balance is shit (play Rock Cruiser A on Hard, you will fucking understand) Most starting ship weapons will carry you through to sector 3, but then you really need to get something else going. Usually you want something that can break through lvl 4 shields AT LEAST since that's what ensures the end boss actually gets damaged.

Most importantly, never feel bad about cheesing in this game. It's an old title with bullshit balancing and fucked RNG, but it's still enjoyable as fuck. God, I wish we had more spaceship management games.

      yep, that's me

        Anonymous

And that's good. You should always make sure your crew is up to speed if you can. A 30% shield increase may not sound big, but even having someone manning ships make the starting Heavy Laser+Small Beam enemies unable to actually damage your ass in the starting sectors.

    How do I Engi B
I've heard the Engi C is great but trying to unlock it with this ship is such a fucking slog

      Anonymous

Start scum the first few sectors until you get a drone recovery module
Swap the shitty drones it comes with for combat or breach drones
If combat you want some good ship weapons like burst laser II or flak, if breach you want bombs or missiles but those can be expensive, alternatively get teleporter with a couple mantis, either way fill up the rest of your ship with zoltans (which you should do on every ship, at least for shields+weapons, don't put zoltans on doors/sensors because those are who you should fight boarders with)

        Anonymous

Should I be moving the Engi I have around to weapons/shields during fights, or is it best to keep him in piloting for dodges? It feels like the Heavy Ion is just slow enough to not keep shields constantly down when unmanned, and timing shots manually is not only annoying but also feels like it lets everyone get 1 last shot in they wouldn't have had otherwise.

          Anonymous

Engie should only be moved around for repairs. If you have some zoltan morons sometimes its worth while to move them between rooms if you're juggling energy levels.
