The inherent problem with anonymous imageboards is that the more posts a thread has the more it will get viewed and more people will post in it, taking attention from smaller and maybe better threads. In time this will kill smaller and genuine posts and reward only the most retarded shit made to get replies. After 10 years this is what is left. Things like wojaks and imageboards being created sorely to fish replies is just a natural progression of that flaw.
I think moot was trying to overcome this with his failed reddit/chan stillborn site he tried to develop but that flaw is too alluring to be left behind. It makes all posts feel rewarding when they get a reply instead of a karma/like/thumb up farm that is the other social medias.

I think its more about how monetization has changed, back in 2012 it was unthinkable to make money selling a niche VN because there wasn't a single storepage that would take it and self-publishing meant basically 0 exposure so people were more willing to do these kinds of things for fun
