No combat suffers from not being committed to a single playstyle. It's a mistake to have both real time and turn based options. Arcanum steamworks also suffer from the same idiot design, either design the game like an ARPG with real time combat or just turn based. But as it happens it has both and it has a really moronic turn based mechanic where attack and movement is separated into 2 categories, and every round you get 30 points to spend in each category with no distance indicator. Skill descriptions are overdone with verbose, giving way too much useless detail about all kinds of useless shit, like all that lore dump ought to be put in a separate encyclopedia somewhere in the game but not in the gameplay. Your cursor tends to snap on targets when you're trying to use AoE spells which is always annoying. Then game starts and there are 3 women in my party. There are pink and lavender colors in the UI which looks like a make up blending tab and it made me ask how many women has worked on this game cause they certainly took their liberties with the color palette.

Like, not even defending the actual mechanics of kingmaker here. But the comparison shows you have no idea how either Arcanum or kingmaker work

Arcanum also had a turn based/real time hybrid gameplay, that was the comparison dipshit.

          >No combat suffers from not being committed to a single playstyle. It's a mistake to have both real time and turn based options.
DnD has had this albatross around its neck for decades. It's always been a PnP turn based system being forced into a simulation of real time where it doesn't truly belong. People still like the system though, so it endures. Blaming one game for the whole genre is disingenuous especially when that game has a better implementation of both styles than any that has come before because Vancian matters since time does, and actual differentiation between swift action, move etc.

Personally I think most games should go full ARPG and discard RWTP so we have more games like Dragon's Dogma but that requires a commitment to newer engines and lore from the ground up that isn't in everyone's interest to develop from scratch I think. I'd rather we still had these kinds of games than not.

          >Skill descriptions are overdone with verbose, giving way too much useless detail about all kinds of useless shit, like all that lore dump ought to be put in a separate encyclopedia somewhere in the game but not in the gameplay.
Minor quibble for people that are literate.
          > Your cursor tends to snap on targets when you're trying to use AoE spells which is always annoying.
If you learned to read you would know this can be turned off by holding down ctrl or in the menus.
          >Then game starts and there are 3 women in my party. There are pink and lavender colors in the UI which looks like a make up blending tab and it made me ask how many women has worked on this game cause they certainly took their liberties with the color palette.
Must be Wrath complaints, yeah the pink and cyan trend everywhere trend is pretty annoying so I'll grant you this one. It comes from the cancer that is leftism though, not necessarily women per se.

Your kingmaker opener parties will have at least 2 women out of 4 (amiri and one of linzi/Jaethal). 3 if you get Valerie over harrim.

Claiming this a problem is interesting in it's own right

            Anonymous

            >RWTP
Trying to do 2 at the same time is causing a problem. This game would've been infinitely more comfortable to play if you just slap divinity's turn based combat, and no pause. Or just have real time with pause and completely design everything around that, which plays like the classical rpgs.
            >Minor quibble for people that are literate.
Absolutely not. Skill definitions, damage and the rest of the fricking combat descriptions, I have to scoop through paragraphs to understand what could've been a simple image indicator with a number written near it. It's confusing and could've been done much simpler. It felt like the lore is just slapped on everything.
            >If you learned to read you would know this can be turned off by holding down ctrl or in the menus.
That's not a dealbreaker for me but nonetheless. Numerous games I like also have this annoying snapping. If they thought about that then great. I didn't play it that much since there were other things which turned me off.

Your little brain will ask 'then how come they released turn based that works'? That woudl require for you to understand how DnD works and the backbone of RtwP mechancis in the game, but that is too much work. I never minded the management stuff too much. Unlike the sequel, it fits the overall campaign that there is some element of building your kingdom

Its the boring and repetitive combat that kills it. Every fight is just against big balls of HP and damage. BG2 with SCS absolutely mogs it in combat variety

  6. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

I didn't mind it too much. It flowed with the story very well and gave purpose to alot of the main qeusts. Finally getting your capital into a city felt pretty good and made me want to defend it. It definitely needed to remove the damn "upgrade" system in favor of an xp system for your advisors and kingdom. Doing a 2 week upgrade that you can't pause while your kingdom collapses was pretty stupid.
It'd be far better if every successful resolution your advisors came up with for a problem granted them "xp" to further their advisor levels. Also buldings should give a weekly "xp" income for villages, towns, and cities. The ones you invest resources into grow the fastest, ones you don't invest in don't grow. Also make converting a village to a town cost alot of BP to force you to pick and choose which you want to upgrade.
I dont know how I'd fix WoTR though.... I like HoMM but this slav jank nock off isn't fun. I'd probably cut it in favor of making more decisions at the war table. Still have armies, recruitment and building but make it an auto resolve thing?

      AoO?

        Anonymous

You only have a limited amount of those and that only works if they don't pass their defensive casting check, which is jacked on every single enemy spellcaster in the game and especially in the late game. Either way, getting in a wild hunt monarch's face with a martial and then seeing him chaincast Dispel Magic until I run out of attacks to interrupt his stupid 1.5 second cast time with is fricking bullshit.

          Anonymous

          >You only have a limited amount
What are feats that increases how many AoOs you have.
          > that only works if they don't pass their defensive casting check,
Hit them harder than. Defensive casting check is dc 10 + the damage they took when casting, so if you hit them for a pitiful 3 they only need a 13 to keep casting.
          > his stupid 1.5 second cast time
Spell casting is based off of his initiative in combat and not its own thing. In other words, get a high initiative hard hitting multi attack per round martial on a casters ass and laugh as they fall to cast anything, or die trying.

            Anonymous

            >What are feats that increases how many AoOs you have.
Not relevant when they're not provoking AoOs.
            >Hit them harder than.
Won't do anything unless you kill him.
            >Defensive casting check is dc 10 + the damage they took when casting,
No it isn't, it's DC 15+spell levelx2 to never provoke an AoO. The concentration check to not lose your spell is something different and it doesn't even fricking matter in RTwP unless you have a full party gangbanging him and causing him to lose his spell 10 times in a single round.
            >Spell casting is based off of his initiative in combat
Except it doesn't set his timer to 6 seconds like it would if his action completed. It ends the spellcast and acts like he never took an action, letting him cast again immediately because his round timer is 0. Try it out yourself.

              Anonymous

              >Not relevant when they're not provoking AoOs.
Spell casting in melee always provokes AoO. Read the rules
              >Won't do anything unless you kill him.
              >Concentration Checks versus Injury
DC 10 + the damage taken + the level of spell being cast.
              Read the rules.
              >it's DC 15+spell levelx2 to never provoke an AoO
And you still keep your AoO on their next casting, which if your martial is still next to them, literally 1 second later.
              >Except it doesn't
I would need to see it for myself, but from what I've seen it's based off of initiative unless something like meta magic like quicken or hasten spell are in play.

                Actions that provoke AoO
                >Casting a spell in melee/threat Reach (see Casting Defensively above).
There are rules for this man. Not only are they in game, but also online.

And if they successfully defensively cast, something that's automatically done if an enemy is threatening you, it doesn't provoke. That's the problem and it's why you see AoOs for spellcasting disappear in the lategame.

                Anonymous

                >something that's automatically
It's not done automatically. You posted the check yourself. The only thing done automatically is the check, against one AoO and not others that are surrounding the mage.

You make a cast defensively check once per spell, not once per enemy threatening you.

I like the PKM management, it's a fun RP counterpoint against only questing and accumulating a giant gold total with nothing to do with it like in most games but you have to:

    >actually want to RP a king of some alignment you enjoy playing
    >mod out the absolutely dumb 14 day time sink penalty upon ranking up
    >understand the building bonus system and put some thought into city and town planning, having an investment mindset helps

A little more feedback on how the rolls work would have been nicer for casuals, most of them don't know the advisor rolls are based off a primary stat for each type of advisor and can be influenced with gear. There's no reason transparent feedback shouldn't be part of such a complex game.

        Role playing vs. collecting achievements.
Plus it's a lot more fun to test out different party build ideas and themes especially with CoTW because it nerfs a lot of cheese to be way more in line with PnP while adding a ton of build options, overpowered cheap summon pets being one of those things.

I worded that badly, but the vanilla cheaply summoned pets are super OP. CoTW nerfs their bloated stats to be in line with PnP but also adds the Summoner class and some adjacent ones like Dragon Shaman.

You can do even crazier pet builds in CoTW but it takes more dedication with a focus on summoner/summoning stuff there and not just slap animal domain from cleric or some ranger level on a bunch of characters.

You fricking wonderboys lied to me, again. Why the frick would i redeem hot milf Jaethal only for her to devote herself to some distant deity and frick off to die in some holy war. The ending where she possess her daughter literally implies you two are fricking like rabbits and breed new future puppets to take over.

And you can also just ally with the fey queen without redeeming her as well. In fact, you become cursed with immortality (oh noes how terrible!) and begin your eternal rule.

Who the frick is writing these "best ending" guides? Fricking cucks actually think nig-nok is a hero material and I should sacrifice myself for amiri because women are strong and brave.

Game is going pretty solid right now. I am hunting down feminist witches and i will make the based hunter-gatherer Dugath the new chief.

It is true the game has modern bugman morality but at least the choices are there and doesn't penalize you unless you attack everything you see. Probably the most fun I've ever had since dragon age origins. Although admittedly i am using bag of tricks to make buffs last much longer and party heals after combat etc. I am not a dnd nerd cba with that crap. 7.5/10.(Companions are mostly lame homosexuals and slay qweens.*except based tiefling twins*) Hope wotr enhanced edition will be released by the time I finish this.

anon, just pretend your sex-deprived MC got smitten by her nude nymph form which is pretty RP-legit, as nymphs are supposed to be extremely attractive and your boy/girl has probably been in a sex dry-spell for a long time and after surviving some combat

Shit didn't see your post i was having a stroke over the whole Valerie thing, sorry anon. And yeah i will keep romancing the fey queen for now. Went too deep to pull out. I will edit the romance counters so i can keep the based tiefling twins and the nymph at the same time. I am super into this.

Oh I completely avoided the former slave duo since I read about them before. They just sit on the courtyard and i pretend they don't exist unless i need them for some spell. But I remember people liking Valerie so it is a disappointment, to be sure. also:
            >pic rel
Legit the only other companion I like besides twins. When I saw the whole edgy undead backstory and evil alignment I assumed she was going to start screeching in any second but to my surprise she is pretty cool. She doesn't sperg over my decisions, doesn't randomly kill people and she is loyal to me so far. Considering how terrible romances are I am glad she doesn't have one. (I will definitely go for the possession ending for pseudo-romance though.) My party is like Kanerah-Jaethal and rest I switch to keep my sanity. The gnome guy is somewhat tolerable, I suppose. I was pretty upset to discover Maegar and his wizard bro aren't going to become my companions. They are better characters then most of my team. Heck the barbarian Dugath is better than most of my team. But yeah overall pretty bad job on companions. I like the game though. It is a miracle to have this much considering the current year. kek. Hope it gets better in the sequel. From what i gathered based Regill will have a perma spot in my party. Hope the succ is not going to be a disappointment like Valerie was.

She actually kinda does if you do her companion qeusts a certain way and end the game a certain way.

Valerie is like every subversion trope and feminist incompatibility with reality rolled into one, a testament to how unworkable all that bullshit is in the worst character ever to be in an RPG, full of self contradictory themes. You can't even make her a paladin again which she'd have halfway good stats for unless you want to wreck the theme (I think she's even hardcoded atheist IIRC so half the classes in the game are unavailable to her even with modding). She's a mid fighter with wrong stats unless you do the dumb intimidate build which she's not even built for properly either. She loses her goddamn girlboss duel without copious amounts of outside buffs, builds completely reworked off her theme, and dishonorable item use. I must admit I quit giving a frick with her builds because even Linzi can tank better than she can and her obnoxious personality drags all my RP jollies down. You have to be pretty bad to make me prefer Linzi over you.

I enjoy giving her a +4 crown of Prettiest Cake Baking Princess and making her sit in the castle to be my diplomacy slave in her personal hell of high society while the real party gets shit done:

              >Baron Rake/Archaeologist Front line hero
              >Amiri Invulnerable Rager Front line monster clubber with the typical 2h collection of every element and bane known to adventuring
              >Jub hyper bomber Alchemist
              >Ekun Bloodhunter Ranger heavy artillery w/front line Dog
              >Tristian Mystic Theurge Cleric/Empyreal Sorc Evoker specialist
              >Jaethal Warpriest AKA rear line warrior that heals herself and cleaves the shit out of ambush garbage coming for the squishies, and provides some unique buffs like bone fists for Dog and Amiri's beast totem attacks, frees Tristian up for more blasting too.

OR we could all listen to "I am your shield" as we all wait for Valerie to get into position so we can hide behind a useless rock on the landscape and my rake spams fear on autoattack so she's useless for that intimidate build too.

Idunno, they have quirks but I have no problem with the good NPCs. I kept the bawd as mage (orc stays at castle forever), the barb, Valerie (though I think I'll respec at inn to multiclass her into ranger to shieldbash, I don't like the tank/DPS specialization in games, it's dumb unrealistic crap). The the cleric blondie and the unded chick, but I kind of tolerate her from the other side - I don't like edge and she's evil but she's manageable.

I don't mind suboptimal builds, it's fine to play with some constrains. (Paladin fulltime with intimidate featchain and 2H weapon MC).

I have been reading other slides as well. But dear lord Valerie is such an obnoxious character. For one thing the way she acts like "men are pigs, everyone wants to seggs me bohoo. I am so pretty woe to meeee." I assumed she was a virgin. Which is nice considering the average wrpg female companion is a prostitute. BUT WAIT. Of course there was some guy with a stupid name I can't even remember whom she shagged like an animal in heat. And this story pops just before you are about to have sex with her for the first time. Who in the actual frick wrote this garbage? And to complete romance you have to keep saying the meme-tier shit like:
      >i am not like the other guys m'lady i am a true simp.
And then i looked at the ending slides... So THE GOOD ENDING is, if you marry her she keeps "adventuring" and "finding herself" while you sit at your throne without an heir like a fricking cuckold as she keeps wasting her years. So inspiring truly. and wait the BAD ENDING: she "settles" with a farmer and bears two beautiful children. lives a happy life.

THIS IS CONSIDERED A BAD ENDING. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAAHAHA. OH GOD. I CAN'T. THIS CAN'T BE FRICKING REAL. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Did someone actually edit the fandom page? Not sure which is more hilarious the fact that she leaves you without an heir or the fact that whoever wrote his garbage thinks having a blissful family life is a worst thing imaginable for a woman.

Frick man. Okay i will have to drop my score from 7.5 to 6.5. You might say who the frick cares about this and look you enjoy your build autism and i enjoy a sensible story. Which is almost impossible to find these days. Fricking hell.

They should change the kingdom management so you cold only return once per month to do your king stuff.
That makes the schizos less paranoid about not missing out on events at home and decreases the overall criticism of this aspect.

You could fix it by making it not a laggy piece of shit that requires 4 loading screens whenever you need to use it.

If it was PS5 optimised, it would work more seamlessly.

      I'm not a schizo, I'm just efficient.
      >get kanerah asap so you're not behind an advisor for act 1
      >return home as soon as I see a flag appear so as to juggle advisors and not waste any days.
      >prioritize problem > rank up > opportunity > region expansion every chance you get
      >sink all excess magic items into BP, you really didn't need to be carrying around 30 copies of fireball scrolls when you don't even have a wizard now did you
      >start all the buildings asap with pre-planning to take advantage of stacking bonuses in order to snowball bonuses up fast, claim those map resources

It's a fun system if you actually play it and your mighty kingdom is snowballing fast into a real power in the backdrop of your adventuring.
The singular fatal flaw is the 14 day time lockdown to level up, mod that out and actually play the whole game with the rest of it normally.

        >start all the buildings asap
Isn't this a trap? I heard the buildings only give you 1 static bonus at creation, and nothing else over time.

So it would be more useful to focus on the giga trade deal early, and save up for Region conquests.

          all the buildings asap
          >Isn't this a trap? I heard the buildings only give you 1 static bonus at creation, and nothing else over time.

Most internet articles say that, but I look at things in terms of opportunity cost, and the opportunity of getting your ranks up and more advisors opened up the fastest means you miss out on less Opportunities and Events, not to mention there are buildings like Hospital and Stocks that directly give bonus to their rolls. Ranks up help their rolls as well. With these methods I'm able to quickly get to 100 percent rolls on my advisors with extra capacity available.

By contrast the sort of "pay big BP up front to try to eke out BP bonus over the whole game" projects are garbage to me because you'll never turn a profit on that loan over the course of the whole game.

People that always say go for the river spot because they can only count buildings and not look at opportunity cost also seem to be giving inferior advice too because the 9 grid start lets you stack a lot of good initial adjacency bonus.

Relations and Espionage are some of the harder stats to raise, and you want Culture and Arcane fast to expand advisors and teleportation. Early advisors fast are critical so you have more overhead to build and train while events are coming at you.

Try this 9 grid start, and try to lean into 9 grid starters (any start out in an open field with no river)

          Herbalist|Shrine|Monument
          Free |Longh|Smith
          Barracks|Tavern|Shop

Where free space is your alignment building, like Stocks for LE. Build watchtower in the free slot, and mage tower when you get a double separate slot. Swap free space, shop, and smith for things like halfling brewery and all the artisan shops when you unlock their quests. Mansion if you need filler on doubles and always do your adjacency bonus like library next to printing press. This start gets you the most economy boost early and all the Relation and Arcane you can early as well.

          >Regions
Also I'm doing CG right now, so I don't have any Stocks (LE) or Bulletin Board (LG) to help with rolls (CG gets Dance Hall and Brothel which both suck) and most of my rolls are 90-100 percent with culture opened up and all 5 regions available in A2 claimed.

Every village is founded, 6 advisors, capital is a town, one village is upgraded to level 2 buildings, and one village maybe is empty iirc. All resource points are claimed.

I've completely cleared the map and it just started to snow, maybe I have 1 or 2 artisan deliveries left and the sweet teeth quest dragging on a return. Point being is there is enough treasure to buy all the region claims and build plenty of buildings if you clear everything and gear a party of six. I bought a suit of adamantine plate also for Jaethal and maybe a couple of other pieces of low-mid expense range gear.

One final reason to get your rolls up ASAP is Triumphs which give you bonus stats for completing with high rolls. It will snowball that much harder in A3 now with such a strong A2 finish.

this isn't so bad if you just prioritize the upgrade that makes it faster with foreknowledge of the game mechanics or even just never spend time upgrading generals and just use the ones who just gain XP and wear items to do their duties. You have a lot of time to do everything especially if you go in knowing that say, personally traveling to any resource points on the map is a waste of time.

Nothing needs to be fixed with the management system, it's fine.
You improve kingdom stats by buildings and events.
Buildings have adjacency bonuses that need to be taken into consideration.
Events are chance based but you have tools to improve your odds like advisor level and crisis points.
Advisors level up with the kingdom stats.
The inclusion of magic portals and crisis points already made the system easy to manage.
Brainlets just need to move on to other games.
I bet you also complained about puzzles in Nenio's dungeon and in inevitable excess in wotr.

    >absolutely crushing kingdom management

    >become vaguely aware i need to do varnhold dlc which i never bothered with before
Do I actually spend time on making characters for this thing? Seems like a lot of overhead for a small dlc right in the middle of the main campaign.
    >premade males are: glaive wielding bard of Shelyn bard that looks ok except I already am a bard of Desna MC, and a paladin of Erastil...with a bow....on a class built to tank and melee smite...

If I wanted to play a crappy ranger I could make better ones playing my worst ranger builds possible than a paladin of Erastil with a bow..wtf.
I guess it's time to try to template a con based elemental aesetic/bloodrager type of thing for laffs. I want the fattest possible con boi, or maybe some kind of offbeat brawler for that pro wrestler merc feel.
