How Zelda fails where Elden Ring succeeds: A Partake

Okay so I finally figured out why I don’t like the BotW formula for Zelda
It’s because of how they approach dungeons. Elden Ring is a fantastic example, the player explores the world and is thrusted into the dungeons without notice, there’s no dumb “do this side quest with this npc so he will follow you to the dungeon and you NEED him to finish the dungeon” bullshit. The player is rewarded by their exploration with a dungeon

BotW should encourage you to check out that mountain in the distance, go through an odd gauntlet of enemies and trials while climbing, only to see a cave entrance at the top. You enter and bam, “SHADOW TEMPLE” appears. THAT’S how BotW should reward you.
But it doesn’t. For all the criticism Aonuma gives Traditional Zelda, he is too afraid to let go of how it approaches dungeons in 3D games. Every single 3D Zelda is the same with how you discover/enter dungeons. There is no moment of “OH!” when exploring to realize you’ve entered a dungeon. This is what Elden Ring and even games like Skyrim have accomplished yet Zelda, for all the praise it gets, still refuses to adopt this simple and extremely rewarding concept.

Thank you for reading.
BotW has some idea on this concept, but it falls halfway flat.

I actually enjoyed finding weapons I could always use in BotW more than [Unique weapon that your build can't use so its useless to you] that Elden Ring did. At worst Zelda was repetitive, but I never fought my way through a camp or dungeon only to be utterly disappointed at something I literally could not use like in Elden Ring.

There was also no variety in Elden Ring. In Zelda I could fund shrines, overworld puzzles like Koroks, crafting materials, enemies to fight and weapons to steal or even random NPC's who had quests and needed help. Elden Ring was almost exclusively fights, and fun as they were it was a very boring experience. You know what is around every corner, some enemy who will attack you and some loot with a 5% of being useful to your build.

I think Fromsoft has a lot left to learn from Nintendo. Zelda was objectively a better world both from a design and a rewards perspective.

BOTW was very empty, without any sense of linear progression. Elden Ring decided it didn't need absolute swaths of nothing.
    >inb4 ER is empty, too
you're moronic if you think it's remotely on the same scale as BOTW

        It's literally not.
It has a bunch of cool legacy dungeons, every region is distinct, and it has like 20 times more enemy variety than BotW does.

and BOTW/TOTK have all these things as well, except the enemy variety that is obviously higher in Elden Ring, which also have some pretty nasty enemy and boss reuse

I despite the weapon durability. It makes no sense. No other game does this, on every other open world game I find what I want and use what I want when I want. It makes it FUN. In any other game if I find a greatsword I fricking use it and make it my main weapon.
In Zelda I find it and I refuse to use it because I know 8 swings later
    >YOUR WEAPON BROKE
frick OFF with that shit and I genuinely can’t believe there’s people defending that garbage mechanic

I liked the first game kinda it was neat but the weapon system is the most moronic thing ever.

This is true and even something Miyamoto understood way back when BotW was first announced (when it didn't even have a title).

    ?t=146
    >Miyamoto: This looks a bit suspicious. We must be near a dungeon!
    >Aonuma: Mmm... [awkward]

So basically Miyamoto understands how Open World Zelda should work and Aonuma decided to be Aonuma

Is it even worth critiquing BotW? The game is complete ass made for babby subhumans and it sold gorillions. The game design paradigm is shattered forever, fanatical brand loyalty and appealing to the lowest denominator truly are the only metrics that matter anymore.

I love BotW, but I understand what you're saying anon, and I agree with it in principle. Games that are about adventure should reward the act of adventure in and of itself, and should consistently surprise the player as a reward.

Unfortunately anon, for every post like yours on the internet, there's about 100 homosexuals crying for a return to "traditional" formulaic Zelda design... you know, game design in which you play half of a dungeon, find an item, use said item to solve the rest of the dungeon, then use the item to defeat the boss... not an adventurous formula at all for players who have played as many Zelda games as I have.

    >There is no moment of “OH!” when exploring to realize you’ve entered a dungeon.
The worst part is how this happens in ToTK. You can be exploring on your own and discover the Wind Temple and go “Oh WOW! This is a dungeon!”
And then realize you can’t complete it because you skipped the moronic mandatory “need to sit through 5 cutscenes with the NPC and get them to follow you so they can help you beat the dungeon!”
It’s like they understood half of it
