[HUGE NEWS] PlayStation Studios Internally Moving Towards Smaller Lower Budget Titles

Ala "ASTROBOT" and "Ratchet and Clank".

Flagship AAA games will still be a thing however they will be more selective when choosing what to give the green light to. Titles like Spider-Man are safe.

Sony has shown interest in re-activating some of its pre existing dormant IP. Some titles mentioned include:
>crash bandicoot
>spyro the dragon
>littlebigplanet (game already in the works)
>ape escape
>jak and daxter
>twisted metal

There's also interest in funding select 3rd party development in return for system exclusivity. Sony has reached out to Konami for a possible Metal Gear Solid remake.

you do realize Microsoft owns that IP now right? fricking moron do some research before faking shit for attention

They are looking to part fund new titles in the franchises.

I find that extremely hard to believe. There's no way Microsoft is going to allow one of their IPs to be released exclusively on Playstation and Sony is not going to fund a multiplatform game.

          Anonymous

Spyro and Crash Bandicoot have a rich history of both PlayStation and multiplatform release. Microsoft have expressed the possibility of Sony funding a game for limited exclusivity. E.g. 6-12 months.

The studios that make those games are gonna get shut down anyway. Might as well sell the IP.

Sony is opening a new Japanese studio for the purpose of developing some of these smaller titles. Ape Escape is likely one of them.

This is the hope you need.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart had a budget of $81M, which is low in relative terms.

It should be noted however that the majority of the titles will have a budget of $50M. Budgets can be expanded depending on the scope of the game and the feasibility of making a profit.

Why do companies chase the AAA titles so hard?
I remember it took like 2 years to get back the investment in TLOU2.
Unless it is GTA, does it really make sense to have a budget of hundreds of millions?

      Anonymous

That's right. This is one of the conclusions that Sony have come to internally and why the vetting process of which AAA games get produced will be more intensive.

        Square should do the same.
Something with the soul of FFVI or Chrono Trigger with decent but not high end graphics would do very well and likely be profitable.

They tried with Octopath, but the gimmick of the premise kind of weighed down the game

Didnt they already "try" something like that, but made shit games that would flop so that they could claim "see! its not viable!"?

I'm thinking more of something with decent 3d graphics (such as Tales of Arise) which was likely much cheaper to produce than FFXVI.
But with the soul of the FFs of the SNES era, rather than being a copy of Game of Thrones. A great villain like Kafka. A charismatic, large cast of characters with different personalities.

FF XVI had Cid as a great character and that's it. The villains were not memorable. The heroes other than Cid were not either.

Sackboy game flopped and LBP3 is widely considered shit from release, so from the business standpoint they aren't worthy investments to revive.

But they effect whether the company that pours millions into developing games. If they don't see the worth in making these games, it doesn't matter if you like it. You're not going to keep getting them.

        (game already in the works)
no it's not. LBP4 is never happening. It's going to be some shitty spinoff like sackboy a big adventure. and if LBP4 does end up being a thing, it'll end up being as shit as 3 because sumo digital cant capture the SOVL that 1 & 2 had. I'd still buy a PS5 to play it though.

sure, but it doesnt have the same level of SOVL as lbp1 and 2 did.

Deals are willing to be made for Crash and Spyro. Likely a limited exclusivity deal in exchange for funding.

LittleBigPlanet is already in preproduction at MediaMolecule.

Ape Escape is being pondered as a task for a new Japanese studio.

Naughty Dog are being tasked with producing more than 1 title at a time and have opted to go for a less intensive game. Such as Jak and Daxter.

Twisted Metal is another game being pondered as a task for a new Japanese studio.

GTA 6 could be classed as a AAAA game due to the budget

Is GTA 6 an impossible to flop game? I think that even if they go full woke and the game is a downgrade to GTA 5 it will still be a hit due to the brand name

It's almost impossible for GTA6 to flop. It's not just a game anymore, it's a cultural icon.

GTA6 can't fail since its selling potential is built on the rep of GTAV and GTA Online. The worst GTA6 can do is destroy the selling potential of GTA7.

How many more times does it have to flop till they realize no one has interest in that franchise? Yes the game did well on the PS1 but that is it. It flopped on PS2. It flopped on PS3. Would have flopped on the PS4 too.

It's pretty interesting how Japanese games used to not need the overseas market to make their budgets back. Snoys are a bunch of morons now but I can't help but think that a new Ape Escape or PaRappa would be cheap to produce and still perform very well.

    >Sony is doing what they should have done years ago so they could release a decent stream of games of varying quality and scope

damn, it is almost like expecting every single one of your major titles to be a blockbuster is a moronic idea. You need to take a few risks and it is better to take small but somewhat beneficial risks to see if you can struck gold.
