I like it a lot. Maybe expand desert to the west and remove the unnecessary cliff in-between.

    >remove rock smash rock
    >allow some desert exploration without goggles

It's one of the better routes in the series.

        Basically what this anon said

It'd probably make a bit more sense if it was partially sunken or was just a cave, and the player descended the floors underground to find the fossils instead.

        [...]
I'd assume he means putting an entrance to a cave into the mountains on the other side of the pond on the south side of the route, adding more reason to backtrack to the route.

Come back after getting surf, maybe find that other Winstrate training before you see him in victory road, or have a tunnel connecting it to the back part of the volcano with the strength boulder.

Going absurdly out of the realm of what gamefreak does, I was hoping that the remakes would have an underground akin to sinnohs courtesy of all the digging npcs actually digging somewhere for once.

Make it optional, give it some unique encounters, put in an optional key item like a fossil, perhaps put a late-game legendary in there so there's a reason to revisit it

    Wait, hang on

      >Optional
Takes up a massive chunk of the middle of the game but ok
      >Fossils
We visit 20,000 undersea caverns in the back half of the game, much better places to find these
      >Late-game legendary
Come off it. The Regis could be mid-game boss fights but they had to give the godless stretch after Pacifidlog a reason to exist and then slap-dashed the regi locations (yes, ALL of them)
      >Unique encounters
Here's where you do have me a little bit - you are hard-pressed to find suitable homes for any pokemon found here because it is SO unique as a biome. Baltoy's line may be moveable to sky pillar, but Trapinch would HAVE to go to the ash route and Cacnea...is homeless immediately.
That being said, "these pokemon couldn't be found anymore!" Is not a sound justification.
The route is boring. Worse yet, it's tedious AND gated until after the 4th badge, so you can't even use it as a cute alternative path to Mt Chimney, and you can't catch the pokemon there until the midpoint of the game.
if they just added an oasis area or more compelling caves hidden in the mountains I wouldn't dislike it so much, but as it stands it's half-assed. I think Emeraldgays forget the fossils used to just be ON THE GROUND in the north east corner. Nobody thought about this, nobody cared about it. The route is trash.

them being at the top of a tower doesn't make a whole lotta sense either

Mirage tower was them attempting to implement the dogshit mirage island. The fossils not being removed from the desert further supports that despite this major change, the desert is still a hole with no interesting purpose.
Know where you should have gotten both fossils? The dig maniac. Makes way more sense. Have him give a fossil when you first come by ("I think this is a fossil, but tell me, does this look more like a root or a claw to you?), And then say he always finds neat things, and to check in regularly. Then have the second fossil be given just as it is now.
Way more interesting interaction on the first pass, and an easy way to remember to come back for a reward.

There was so much variety between the land routes. Maybe they put in extra effort with that because they knew the sea routes would have not had that many possibilities.

It's one of the better routes, it's like route 119's brother even moreso than route 120, you just don't really notice it because of the way they segmented it.
If you ask me the segmentation is what makes this route really interesting though. Say what you want about road blocks but seeing cool areas that you can't get to yet really spices up the experience because it invigorates the imagination, which is a strong point of the series. It also helps that you can listen to the desert theme early.
Honestly this whole stretch of Hoenn might be my favorite, more so than even route 119 and route 120, probably more than any other route in the series.
There's just something so utterly fricking adventurous about finally smashing the rocks that blocked your way, venturing northward, passing a cool ass desert, then deterring to the west onto route 112, but, seeing that you can't get to Lavaridge that way, you head up the nearby volcano, through a steamy tunnel, then pop out the other end. From there you head over to an old lady's remote cabin for some rest before setting out again through a route of pure ash with the most serene ambient music ever, before, FINALLY, reaching another settlement, tucked way up in the northwest corner of the map. Then you head down, passed some unique canyon biome with waterfalls, into a cave that looks like the moon (with watefalls), then pop out the other end before finally reaching Rustboro where you're free to use the shortcut from earlier in the game to get back to where you were. It's just pure kino, it perfectly exemplifies everything that I love about the way Hoenn naturally guides the player around it's map, the whole thing truly feels like an adventure by it's very design.

I truly love pokemon games and I'm glad I have hoenn to help me realize that. Which region is for you guys, anons?

The loop is very satisfying, although taking a second lap to Mount Chimney just for the fourth badge is a little annoying (although Jagged Pass is kino)

Why did they stop giving a shit about making the routes and caves look not so blocky after gen III

      >Route centered around using the bike
      >In postgame, not less
Not a great example to complain about
Here's a main-story route with a little of everything, and it's literally just a giant L. But there's so much going on, and in this case it's almost too much - the rewards for straying from the path are minimal, I always Speedrun this route.
I think the real issue is upon entering a route, there is little reason to explore anymore - any items worth their salt are locked in postgame, and pokemon can be found in any grass at the beginning of each route.

I'm talking about the scenery, not the routes themselves. Notice how every hill in that route is just a rectangle. Of course, it's a tile-based game, so it will ultimately be a bunch of right angles, but in gen 4 they did nothing to spruce it up like in 3. Compare route 119 to route 210 and hopefully you'll see what I mean.
