Playing video games in itself is to "relax and frick around," so how the hell do you know if the players you're losing to aren't also relaxing and fricking around? Video games, like all other competitive past times, are played for fun. • 2 years ago

This argument is so tired and dumb. You're literally saying you want to relax and have fun by playing against people of lower skill than yourself, so you don't have to "try". Which is fine in a single player game, just drop it down to easy. But in an online game your enjoyment comes at the expense of other, less skilled players, unless they are masochistic

The issue is that lobbies are also disbanded at the conclusion of the match, traditionally MMR would only factor into the initial matching and every subsequent game the teams would be shuffled based on score in the previous game, so the quality and fairness of matches gradually improved the longer you played and this encouraged the formation of friendship and rivalries as well.

Instead every game is a new matchmaking session and is now balanced based on the distribution of players with the smallest possible difference in the sum of every players rank in a given bracket, in theory this produces a mathematically balanced game every time, in practice you get one team with players at the absolute top and bottom of a given bracket and another with all the players in the middle, and those borderline players either get promoted or demoted to the next bracket where they are now at the top or bottom again and get an equally badly balanced game, this also completely destroys the social aspect.

      It's just a bad system.

FPS used to have community run servers with all sorts of mods, settings and communities that were way more fun to play.

      Anonymous

Because the elephant in the room is that a lot of FPSs are just not that enjoyable when the entire lobby is full of medium to high-skill players. I'm not defending people crying about SBMM, I'm just saying that it becomes a grind when you can barely tread above a 1.0 K/D.

Zoomies never got to experience the dedicated server days.
Matchmaking is just putting random buttholes together with no reputation and no consequences. It is nothing but low quality matches over and over again.
In dedicated servers you would keep playing games with a loose collection of people. There is a reason to not be a complete piece of shit. On top of that players made a variety of servers. You had servers that encouraged trolling and bullshit, you had servers that discouraged it. You had noob servers that kicked you for being too good and pro servers that kicked you for being trash. Eventually you found the right server.
A big part of the reason people remember TF2 is that it was the last big hurray of dedicated servers.

Games have to be balanced because there is always a sweaty moron in every lobby who tryhards and thinks he is cool for it. They make a casual game suddenly competitive, its like that one scout on 2fort that is really good and runs for the objective over and over while killing frendlies.

Not just mentality, it's also the fact that 1v1 fightan games are just different from 6v6/12v12 shooters. If you do a 1v1 in any game, you probably want someone around your skill level, that's optimal for enjoyment. 12-24 players (or more) of similar decent skill in a shooter just turns into an esports match, and esports is shite.

You'll find that skill based matchmaking gets more complaints the sihttier it is.
Rainbow Six Siege had a perfect strategy of using some copper 4 account to bring the whole team down to stomp on people.
Regular casual matches also consisted of platinums stomping on another team, you either had to deal with the former or get kicked around like a football in the latter.

      Anonymous

the fact of the matter is, fps players are sensitive b***hes who can't handle getting gud and would rather stomp children all day in their dedicated servers, inflating their k/d whereas fighting games inherently encourage the opposite mentality ---continously fighting players better than you and seeing your personal growth as the motive for your enjoyment

the only people who call it skill based matchmaking are call of duty shitlords who want to punch down on new players while they sweat their balls off and don't want to play balanced matches
everyone else in literally every genre of game, including FPS games, always wanted balanced matches of players of equal skill
even server based games still had many servers implementing rating systems and trying to organize fair & balanced games so that people can have high quality matches between good players

literally name me a game except console shooters where people don't want balanced matchmaking systems

You'll only get a team on your own skill level in 30% of games and only if you have a consistent winning or losing streak so you move to the middle of a given skill bracket, this is due to every match being a new matchmaking session based on the most equal distribution of player ranks for a given bracket.

You will also NEVER get any enemy team on your own skill level.

But thats literally what matching players of even skill gives you??? If you have a 1:1 win/loss ratio, then matchmaking is working perfectly. Its when its completely random that complete shutouts happen, because experts get paired with noobs. Theres a reason these candy asses make 'smurf' accounts, because theyre too big of pussies to fight a fair fight.

Dedicated servers was already a perfect solution to this problem, but companies decided to just inflict centralized cancer into their games.

Want to be a tryhard? Join a clan server and get people who want to practice and play high level games.

Want to play randos? Just jump onto any public server and get into it.

Want to frick around and do completely absurd shit? Go to the server with a million mods installed and play ridiculous game modes and laugh at all that shit.

Centralized is terrible because it punishes everyone for not wanting to play like an esports league dweeb.

This is why server based multiplayer is superior. You get to know regular players and can try hard if you want or frick around if you want. It also filters out the toxic gays who play just to aggravate others. This is why TF2 servers were so good. They were so laid back and chill that you could have a legit political discussion with some random stranger (all in good faith) simply because the environment was tailored to the player’s enjoyment rather than training the player to be the best sniper in the entire world.

Frick skill based matchmaking. Multiplayer aren’t for mastering, they’re for sharing spontaneous fun with others. Im not getting paid for that shit so why should I have to feel stressed? Bring back servers.

Servers put control of the game in the hands of players - and companies hate that shit with a passion.
