You find the things. That's it.
The second game zoomerproofs it a little by awarding you a shiny token representing the achievement.

If I remember correctly, Banana Coins are used for hints and saving, DK coins are just tokens to get 100% If I remember correctly, and the Bonus Barrel coins are the ones that get you into the lost world in the post game (has the best levels in the game so definitely worth getting to)

For me 102% in dkc2 was way harder than 101 in dkc1 but admittedly i would never have found that secret bonus without the internet so there’s that

There is a secret world and a secret last boss when you get all the dk coins.

    >Banana Coins
You use them for fast travel with Funky, hints from Cranky, saving with Wrinkly, and 1-up games with Swanky. There's an infinite amount.
    >Kremling Coins
There's 75 of them, one for each bonus area in the game. Some levels have multiple bonus areas, some only have one. An exclamation mark will appear on the overworld when you get them all in a stage. You need to use them to access the secret world.
    >DK Coins
There's only one in each level, for a total of 39 + the final one you get for beating the secret final boss.

Going for 100% forces you to be pretty keen and spot small things that just aren't right in the corner of the screen. If going through stages with a fine-tooth comb sounds fun, then go ahead.

DKC2 was the only time collectathon was done right.

No, it still takes away from the game making dkc the best in the series.

Never gotten 100% in a game in my life, nor have ever felt like I was missing out on anything other than pointless busywork.

It’s pretty fun learning the games logic and piecing together where the hidden barrels might be. First game didn’t follow as much of a logic

read the manual. it's all explained in the manual. google the game name plus "manual pdf" and you will find it. there are pretty pictures in it and it will explain all game mechanics to you. when you start playing the game it is expected of you to have read the manual.

this is how it used to be, kiddo

Great idea but I was born this side of the millennium so I don't have the attention span to read a manual. If there isn't a video of it it might as well not exist.

This isn't yoshi island where the game is worthless is you don't go for 100% and just a chore if you do. Going through DKC2 is fun, and going for 100% is interesting enough, it also unlocks new levels, although there's a cheat to bypass it altogether if you don't feel like it.

They're actually called Hero coins throughout DKC2, DK Coins is the DKC3 name. In DKC2 they don't contribute to the lost world or percentage in any way. Their only purpose is the ranking on the video game heroes screen after beating either of the K.Rool fights. In DKC3 you need all the coins to get the Gyrocopter to get the last of the banana birds and the true ending which nets you the last few percentage points.

GBA port swaps it so Link is properly second place on the podium but then your problem is you're playing the GBA port.

I hate Rare's 00's obsession with generic fonts like Impact and Comic Sans
