When are you supposed to take on madame butterfly? I think she was my second boss and I don't think that was intended

It feels balanced for the attack power you have after beating Gyoubu but before Genichiro

2nd boss is optimal, she's meant for after you defeat Horse Cena and get his attack upgrade, but before you get Genichiro's stuff done. However going and getting all the minibosses in the castle and the few extra health upgrades can make her easier or harder, and of course doing Genichiro or even sequence-breaking and going all the way to Fake Monk before doing even her or Genichiro makes her a joke.

For me she was the first. Well, my real first boss was that fricking ninja on the pagoda in the hirata memory

Just be aggressive and dodge a lot. You can do it.

I don't know, she was my first boss but I think you suppose to defeat her after the Guardian Monkey.
      >why?
Because if I remember correctly you got a ton of snap seeds by the end of the Sunken Valley, and sincerely I don't know what else you can do with these.

Just cheked the wiki, you get 3x snaps seeds on the Sunkey Valley passage + 3 more in the Sunkey Valley itself. Plenty of seeds to beat the old hag easily

The seeds are for phantom enemies. Do they effect madame? I used most of mine on the fake monk

In her second phase she summons a shitton of ghosts that if not killed quickly turn into those pesky light butterflies she sometimes throws at you. You can dodge by running but if you frick up is a guarantee death. The seeds make her second phase be almost as easy as her first phase.

If you can't beat Lady Butterfly you're fricked for the rest of the game. You really need to sit down and take in the new pace of combat. It's all about rhythm and attrition. Once it clicks you will love it. Don't be in a rush to do it, let it come naturally.

The best thing about Sekiro is how incredible it feels once you've gotten it. Made it hard to go back to the relative tedium of Souls combat in Elden Ring after that. When you do things in Sekiro right, it feels effortless. Even when you're at your best in Elden Ring, it's mostly just exhausting.

Don't use lock on with her unless she is flipping around, stand to her left and spam normal attacks. It puts her in a stunlock.

She's very vulnerable to attacking and then immediately dodging to the side and attacking again. She's the first boss that requires anything resembling skill, but she's still one of the easiest in the game.

Use the shuriken anytime she jumps into the air; it will knock her on her ass and create an attack opening for you.

I beat her on my first attempt. Just dodge her attacks to the side and attack. I had no clue she was such a casual filter until after.

    Butterfly is the first serious challenge to new players, because it's the first boss (besides Genichiro but most get him 3rd after Horse Cena and Butterfly) who tests your understanding of game mechanics. Namely, ridiculous aggression and parrying. The only really effective way to fight her is constantly being in her face slapping her around while memorizing and quickly reacting to her moveset, and the speed of both means fricking up will punish you with a big loss of health the boss will then make it hard to recover with her persistent aggression. Also-also, if you 1 or 2 try her, you have enough snap seeds to completely invalidate her illusions. If you frick up, though, it makes it even harder because you can only find like 5 seeds before this point and using them all means 'frick you, deal with the phantoms normally'. Only tips I can really give;
Whenever she's flipping up onto her spiderweb lines in the air or jumping, toss a shiruken for high poise damage, airborne enemies take massive poise damage from being struck by these in-air and are usually knocked down as well.
Slap her until she perfect-parries you; that means she's about to counter with her own combo and you should be prepared to start parrying in response. This goes for most bosses; normal parries/blocks is fine, perfect parry means they're about to open up a can of whoop-ass.
You can parry all her ranged attacks and it's usually safer than trying to dodge them, depending. Watch for perilous attacks.
IF ALL ELSE FAILS; Butterfly has a cheese that you can use to skip most of her fight, though be warned it only makes later shit harder if you cop out and don't git gud on her as Genichiro will slap your ass later.
Tap dodge to either her left or right, then basic attack from the dodge. Quickly repeat, then attack again, going in a circle. She cannot dodge this.

      >Butterfly is the first serious challenge to new players

madame I did it in 10 and Jinzo I do it in 0

The ogre is the only thing I would really say is bullshit in this game. They definitely just put that there to be annoying

One thing the game really wants to teach you regarding her fight, especially in the second part, is the value of health damage as a means to maintain Posture damage.
Another really easy way to beat her is just keep using thrust attacks. She has to deflect them which means you deflect her back right away for solid Posture damage and it both forces her to go into her sweep more often and makes it easier to react to, since you can just cancel charging the thrust and jump.

It took me a while to understand that "play safe and wait for an opening" doesn't work and that you need to be beating on her basically non-stop.

One thing helped me greatly to enjoy sekiro gameplay is that I stopped trying to predict, memorize or cheese enemies, stopped relying on my reflexes. I started to do is watching enemy blade (or other dangerous enemy parts), keeping it cool and reacting accordingly. I could beat enemies with learning their patterns 100%. Just stay calm, but decisive.

      >I could beat enemies with learning their patterns 100%
So you MEMORIZED their patterns with such accuracy that you could PREDICT how to react next?
      Dumb wording.

The first time I fought her she kicked my ass and I barely beat her after dozens of tries, but ended up dropping the game after the two monkey fight.
A couple of years later I revisited the game and fricked her up without even trying. All I remember is attack attack parry attack attack parry dodge in attack attack parry
I had her practically stuck to the wall. She couldn't even manage to summon her ghosts.

while i liked this game i never finished it, the difficulty is all over the goddamn place.

first boss is easy, 2nd is a huge difficulty spike, 3rd an obscene difficulty spike, then difficulty drops off a clip for majority of the game until maybe the big ape but still not as hard, then towards the end it shoots to the fricking moon when you have to fight father owl twice in a row, first time is tough, second time is impossible.
