Minish cap is the only Zelda game I consider exceptional. I wasn't able to find AlttP and ALBW particularly good. And I could write essays on this. But I do plan on playing Links Awakening soon.

It seems more so that I can't "get into" the 3D Zelda games which I can also write an essay on.

What is exceptional about Minish Cap to you?

good dungeons. actual puzzles. overworld feels like solving a puzzle of how to get to the dungeon, engaging with unique and distinct mechanics like the mushrooms that shoot you across gaps. has some of the best item use in the entire series, both creatively and just by sheer frequency, both outside and inside dungeons. unique overarching gimmick that actually makes for creative puzzles and a delightfully clever boss fight.

yes, what I'm saying all sounds vague and broad. but that's only because I haven't played the game in a long time. I know it's all true tho, and so do people that have played the game. It's just a matter of how much they value the things I've mentioned. Which I know to be "no" based on how many people deepthroat AlttP and OoT. Both games id argue have almost no actual puzzles, and poor item use and general sterile creativity.

Now I'm questioning if you really actually played ALTTP and ALBW, because Minish Cap is almost devoid of puzzles compared to the former two, specially ALBW, which is the most puzzle heavy of the entire series, and the puzzles that Minish Cap does have are borderline childish due to how easy they are, losing only to Phantom Hourglass and Spirits Track. The Puzzles of Minish Cap are more closer to the "puzzles" in Pokémon: push ice pillar across ice floor.
          >overworld feels like solving a puzzle of how to get to the dungeon
Well, that's what the Dark World from both ALTTP and ALBW are: it's a meta puzzle to get across inaccessible areas to get to the dungeons by traveling between the two worlds. Heck, same thing with Oracle of the Seasons/Ages, except changing seasons/era to get across inaccessible areas.

You don't understand what puzzles are then. Not really my problem. Not like you're giving concrete examples anyway.

Uh no. I never have to figure out how to get to a dungeon in ALBW or AlttP. They're deliberately very straightforward. The former is even incredibly item gated making it even more clear.

Should have gone the Castlevania route instead after Zelda 2.

I'd say the 2D Zeldas are my favorites, but I guess I haven't played a lot of the 3D ones. I think Four Swords is the only 2D Zelda I haven't played, whereas for 3D I only played OoT/MM and Twilight Princess.

A Link To The Past was legitimately good- interesting story and imo good pixel art graphics. never really played another 2D zeld so I don't know how the others hold up but I think the SNES Zelda is good. Maybe I was just stoked to be able to play it on an emulator in 2001. All the zeldas from Gamecube onwards are better but thats just modernity bias.

Play A Link Between Worlds to introduce yourself to 2d zelda mechanics but with modern Nintendo polish then play ALTTP then Link's Awakening if you wanna be a hipster about it to other people.

Link's Awakening is the best one, but LBW is a solid runner up.
