I decided to play the Devil May Cry series for the first time and I must say, this level and it's boss, is overall the worst level I have ever played in my entire life.
What in the actual shit were they thinking? Did they even playtested this shit? The fucking helicopter has litterally two attack patterns and stays fucking motionless for like entire minutes straight what the fuck is this shit? Should I immediatly skip to 3? Are the female MC levels the same?
I thought DMC2 being bad was a meme because Dante looks edgy and the atmosphere feels off but holy shit man.
DMC2 is actually kind of good, storywise.
It's the gameplay that sucks ass.
I'm only just after this mission so the story is just "go to le evil building" but I don't mind it, the first game story was corny as shit but I liked it.
The game pretty much sucks, but if you’re anything like me it’s at least worth beating the Dante disc just to hear the insanely cheesy performance from the guy who voices the final boss.
Any guess on who the original DMC 2 director was?
DMC 2's story was mediocre
DMC 2 Dante has a few good lines. But it lacks the camp/corniness of 1 and later games.
Only hints we have for the original director is that he was a tenured and respected director at the time and Itsuno replacing him was met with some internal controversy.
I've heard he also continued to work on the series in non directorial roles but that hasn't helped narrow it down .
Whoever it was is still based for not turning Dante into a ninja turtle.
if that was a diss on his characterization, you're a complete retard as the writer remained the same.
Yeah it was. 2 Dante is peak vampire hunter form.
My dad says the vest is from the cenobites.
DMC 1 Dante looked more like a vampire hunter.
Were there any other "respected" directors capcom had available during DMC 2's development? Also why be so secretive about the dude's identity? I get the development was a shit show and the game was pretty bland but it just seems odd.
From what I've read it's likely that the failings of the game are not the fault of the director alone and can also be attributed to the internal politics of Capcom's higher management at the time. The entire dev team had no experience with 3d action games, were not allowed contact with the team that developed the first game, and pretty much only had the marketing materiel from the first game to work with. I've also read that the dev team for the first game, including Kamiya were being kept in the dark that a sequel was in development until quite late.
Kamiya's team wasn't quite kept in the dark for secrecy reasons so much as corporate incompetence. 1 hadn't even hit retail yet when they decided to strat development on 2 with an entirely different team and Kamiya only found out cause a dev came to him for some documents.
>literal poop eater likes dmc2
>DMC2 story is actually kind of good
Not funny even as a joke
they didn't have time to make it good, everything you play in the game was made in 3 months time
What? Why?
Zez good shit
Because the development was such an absolute disaster that in a year's worth of dev time the only thing they got done with the game was the stinger move until they got Itsuno to replace the previous director.
well the stinger animation with Dante's hair moving in the wind does look kind of cool.
So the whole game's like this? Damn I'm rushing this shit and play 3 asap
DMC2's development was so fucked that Itsuno begged to make DMC3 just to not be known as "the DMC2 guy". He was ready to outright leave the industry as a whole if he couldn't or if 3 was a bomb.
The fact 2 even managed to be playable is a miracle, and the fact that 3's dev team was almost the same as 2's is a testament to just how much a lack of direction can squander an otherwise skilled team.
how did itsuno fuck up 2 tho?
He didn't, but he was the only credited director so he had his own face on that failure.
He was sent in to replace the original director 6 months before release and all they had was a semi finished Stinger animation and loose scraps of environment assets. Almost every thing you see in the released game was made in those 6 months.
The crunch was apparently so bad that Bingo Morihashi (who would go on to be the writer for 3, 4, 5 and the novela) was sent to the hospital coughing up blood.
The full story is a pretty fun read.
sounds like he got shafted pretty hard
Japanese corporate politics, some of the most cutthroat shit in the world.
Honestly, given that much of that same team was able to go on to make Devil May Cry 3 with Itsuno afterwards makes it seem like the fuckup was squarely on management. People are saying ITT that they weren't even allowed to look at DMC1 and if that's true then the project was doomed no matter what the skills of the team involved. I work in software development and there's no way you can iterate on an existing system with only the marketing materials, that's insane. That DMC2 is as superficially complete and functional as it is speaks to the teams abilities if they did 99% of it from scratch inside 4-6 months. Like yeah the AI sucks and the moves are unbalanced and feel bad but do you know how hard it is to make anything?
>What? Why?
They wanted to ride off the success of the first one but they lacked a proper director and Itsuno was put in the dev team like 6 months before release.
The infested chopper boss is the single greatest boss in all of video gaming. Devil May Cry 2 is already known as one of the greatest of all time (GOAT factor = high on this one), but the infestation that plagues the cities of Devil May Cry 2 allows for an extremely emotionally-complex character set. The infestation is a manifesto of our society and the zombie-like enthusiasm we take in our militarism, which is a great moral leap backwards. It spreads to the masses, and the military continues to kill. In that sense, the Infested Chopper boss fight is something more. You fight it once and it takes forever to beat. This mimics the reality of persuading a military enthusiast in real life - it takes forever. Then, the more you fight the choppers, you realize that the mission of beating them all is impossible. It is a grim fate that only Devil May Cry 2 can convey accurately. In other words, the infested chopper is definitively the single greatest boss fight in gaming and represents all of society's fears, which tells many stories which are incomprehensibly deep.
dinty
You're supposed to build up your Devil Trigger to fly and attack the helicopter using melee (which does more damage than your guns throughout the entirety of the game btw) instead of standing there like a retard and spamming pellet shots for 5 minutes but the crowbcat video you watched didn't tell you about it.
DMC2 is legitimately an unfinished game. Not in the modern sense where it feels like there's not enough stuff to do, but in the classic, "This was shipped without the extra 10 months of work it needed to be a functioning game". Just skip it, 3, 4, and 5 are actual good games you could be playing instead of wasting your time. The only thing I can say about DMC2 is that the AI is so bad you can often beat fights by just not moving and shooting them, so at least it's not difficult to get through.
This DESTROYS the DMC2 shitter
NO amount of development would make it good. It is not just unfinished, it is also a shit game. A finished shit game is still a shit game. Kamiya could not salvage this shit.
if it had itsuno from the beginning it wouldn't look like that in the first place, dipshit. the old director built that shitty foundation that they had to scramble to make work. like somebody else already said, it's more or less the same team as 3
Also people who made DMC2 only ever made arcade games before.
And its easier to design game-play for a game that usually lasts less than an hour.
The dev team also missed the point of what made DMC good and assumed its just the guns.
DMC2 was so bad, it should've killed the entire franchise. This series didn't deserve a third game, and yet DMC3 is arguably (and in my opinion, definitively) the single greatest game on the PlayStation 2, and one of the greatest games of all time. It's fucking insane how much of a difference there is between 2 and 3. DMC4 is really good, although it has its problems, and DMC5 is fucking excellent.
>He got filtered by DMC2 and thinks 1 is better
Cringe
Where's the first DMC2 director? Why does he hide his identity?
It was Kojima, hence the focus on guns.
Devil May Cry as a series is the ultimate gay retard filterer and you didn't pass the test.
For a second I thought you were trolling and talking about Ninja Gaiden which had a level with a tank and a helicopter but then I remembered DMC2 exists.
DMC2? Why are you making stuff up anon? Next you're going to tell me that there's a Thief game made in 2014 or that Sonic 06 is real...
>I decided to play the Devil May Cry series for the first time
Everybody should know by now that DMC2 is the worst one and not worst your time, the series even makes it EASY to ignore it and it might as well not exist. Same with the shitty reboot that they tried.
>DMC1
>DMC3
>DMC4
>DMC5
That's all you ever need to play.
No. They must through both the Dante and Lucia campaigns. And DmC(DE) to under why color coded enemies are gay.
I wouldn't recommend DmC or DMC2 for a newcomer to the series. By all means, they should be played afterward but never by someone going in release order.
Psst OP you should also play Bayonetta after you play DMC3 and 4, maybe even before 4
I wonder if Capcom will eventually remake Devil May Cry.
One could be kino
Two could could be pretty good
What would a DMC 1 remake be like? Just quality of life improvements like having fun switching, a faster devil arms switch, adding bloody palace? Or like different move sets between Force edge, alastor, and sparda?
I don't want a remaster with 5's combat slapped on top.
Well what do you want?
Whatever daddy kamiya wants.
So minigames and kaiju battles?
You know it.
just graphics, effects and load-times
I'd keep the quasi Resident Evil feel, part of the charm
>adding bloody palace?
well, that too...And make Trish playable.
The doors of throughout a run should be randomized.
So RE1 remake: Devil may cry edition. Also playable Nelo angelo
>Also playable Nelo angelo
Unlockable, but you must finish on Dante Must Die
Trish after you unlock easy ;^)
Fair enough. Sounds worth it to Weill a great sword, shoot blue fire balls out of my hands, teleporting around, and get summoned swords.
I forgot is the rank before or after the invisible fish boss underwater
isn't some of the s requirements stupid shit like don't take a single bit of damage
Blowing through the game once takes like 4 hours. Just finish it once so you can participate in discussions about how awful it is in the future. It's a good learning experience.
I was going to be KIIIIIIING
Umm sweatie, please follow the current contrarian narrative. Repeat after me: 3 and 5 are bad. 2 is a masterpiece.
Just please, somehow, find a way to praise it. Any bullshit reason will do. And don't forget to mock 3 or 5 while doing it. Keep the fight brother!
