I don't care that modern games are awful. I know that no good games are being made anymore. But I still consume them. Because I don't want to sit in quiet stillness. I don't want to face the darkness. It terrifies me. So I drown it out. It doesn't matter that Fortnite, and Genshin, and Overwatch, and FF14 are objectively terrible games, and that they exemplify the downfall of the medium. I still need to play them, I still need the distraction, I am too scared of facing myself.

Why the frick would you do that instead of playing through older games you either never played, only played through once, or only started but never completed?

Tell you what, I can resonate with this. Because I made a massive change by dropping gaming this past year, I only play singleplayer games now, and not for very much time. But honestly, every single person in society has something to get them through the days, nobody straightedges anymore. It might be tiktok, alcohol, netflix, etc.
Realizing that makes me realize making efforts to step away from consumption are pointless. If anything it'll just make you feel depressed. Not to sound edgy or fake deep, but life usually isn't the beautiful girl in a bright sunny field that people imagine it to be if you get away from consumption. Usually it's just bland and dreary. Yes, friends are great and do a lot, but there's still a lot of alone time to get through.

So it's all just a waste of time. It makes no sense to even complain about modern gaming, seeing as many of us aren't playing them for the enjoyment, but to get the seconds to tick by faster.

Anything that isn't productive can be considered a "waste of time". Just spend your relaxation time how you want

Yes, precisely. And we're complaining about them so the seconds tick by faster.
Honestly nothing is more depressing than the time you actually strive to make improvements in your life. I'm a much better person now in the eyes of society, but that's kind of it. There really isn't too much to achieve or do IRL. And that's why pretty much everyone has some form of escapism. Exploring a magical world as a cool character in a video game for some hours a day is much more appealing than...? I'm not even sure what people do most of their days.
If you ask an npc to name some hobbies it's always gonna be shit like music, painting, cooking, reading, bla bla bla. Those aren't fulfilling to anyone who's experienced modern technology, and that's why all of those things are filled with people that have no passion and only want money from it.
Of course there's friends to talk with and hang out with, but again, in the adult world, it's hard to make things come together sometimes. When you're by yourself I think consumption is the most logical thing to do

What you call "friends" are just people who you share a mutual addiction with. None of them would spend time with you if you didn't share the same escapist addictions.

Not true. In fact, most of my friends don't even play games, or if they do it's just casual shit like cod every now and then. If your friends don't want to actually be with you then they aren't your friends

That's true to any extent. If you're just focusing on "self-improvement", then all you really have to do is get exercise, eat healthy, and dress well.
But that's not true with other interests. Video games and consumption in general simply aren't as fulfilling as achieving something on your own. They're more stimulating, sure, but progressing at a skill or becoming knowledgeable about something is far more satisfying. I don't know how you would get bored in this world. But then again, I'm a very inquisitive person who likes to me myself things...

I feel you. I've gotten on a bit of a binge where I just really wanted to learn everything and gain all kinds of new skills, the satisfaction is there but it wore off quickly when I couldn't think of anything I really wanted to learn. As far as skills, absolutely. The main reason people don't care so much about skills anymore is that consumption give you consistent stimulation and even satisfaction. Someone winning in a battle royale wont be as satisfied as someone who just finished repairing their car on their own, but in terms of time, the battle royale match only took 20 minutes while the car repair took hours at minimum. And the satisfaction is going to wear off soon anyway
Not to say that I disagree with you or that I'm saying skills aren't worth it. Just looking at the other direction

My experience is that if I play games or do too much consumption I get not necessarily in a depressed mood but somewhat uninterested and apathetic to everything.
The "satisfaction" isn't really temporary for me, it influences my general attitude more than anything. I don't particularly have your issue with learning things or skills being boring, because I'm always had a wide range of interests. I've spend days where I spend 8 hours studying topics I like, etc.
What typically yields the most overall happiness is concluding a "productive" (not necessarily work, just not consumption) with consumption itself. I find relaxing after "production" to be significantly more satisfying than consuming the entire day. It keeps me in a state of constant intrigue and wonder at the world (which I know sounds cliche and exaggerated but that's what best describes it) and legitimately "at peace" with things. There are a few days were I permit myself to be "lazy" and relax, and I do enjoy those days as a change of pace, but I can't do that consecutively. Just my view, though

Definitely agree, and that's my ideal life. I just find it hard to really get something I want to keep doing. It was music production for awhile, but I've burnt out on it and haven't had a desire to return for a long time, don't think I will. So I hope to find something else, but if I were to not, then all that I said about consumption being most logical would apply to me I guess.

Id say the world isnt "boring", but it greatly limits what you can do in it. Say you want to go explore. Ok, so just start wandering? How will you eat? Where will you sleep? Something cool you see along the way? Costs money. Need to go work for the money. Need a resume to get the job. Need to submit the resume on a computer. Need to have a computer. Need money for computer, internet and electricity. Need to work for that. Etc etc

Hobos are free to do whatever, but they cant, because they are trapped in a world that expects you to do the thing to get the stuff that lets you go do the thing. Its a tiring cycle.

Yeah I feel this really heavily. Everything is so convoluted and sometimes it's easy to just drop everything/give up and try to escape it all. I would love to move countries and live somewhere else, but it is such a complex, dragging process that takes many years.

That's very true, which is why I've always been interested in financial independence and retiring early. My fantasy is to be (relatively) self-sustainable and live off my assets in the mountains, doing what I wish with my time. Perhaps it's somewhat childish but that prospect brings joy to me everyday
