I finally beat it. It was fun and rather innovative for 1985, but rather exhausting near the endgame.

I finally beat it. It was fun and rather innovative for 1985, but rather exhausting near the endgame. The game near the end seems to rely too much on unbreakable blocks and enemies that can one shot you. You are incentivized to used the demons ring and hourglasses to kill all the enemies, but you can only increase your defense by taking hits, forcing you to waste red potions while you let the enemies that don't one shot you wail on you. Also only being able to buy 990 rations of food at a time is tedious once your character is at the higher levels.

The ending theme is nice, though. What did you guys (how played the game) think of it?

Dragon Slayer I & II are both in English, so you can play them in a pc88 emulator if you are EOL. Xanadu in particular has a "Revival" version that has great music like

said. There is also a Revival Xanadu Easy Type that is useful if you are new to the game. The original pc88 version has a shitton of softlocks in the game and forced you to spend gold if you wanted to save anywhere other than the level entrances.

Xanadu Scenario II is only for the pc88 and you need the first game to play it. I'm not sue if you need to beat the first game or just simply own the copy, but you can try playing Scenario II once you've played Revival Xanadu and want something even more difficult. Or you can play Revival Xanadu II.

Ys has the Turbografx CD and Windows remakes that are in English. Sorcerian was released for DOS by Sierra, but has butchered music and changed a lot with the original. Legacy of the Wizard was officially released for NES. Popful Mail has the Sega CD release translated by Working Designs. Brandish has the SNES port (not recommended) and PSP remake (recommended) officially translated. Brandish II has fan translations for both the SNES and PC98

thanks. i already played SCD Popful Mail and loved it. Also played Ys1+2 on steam, how different are the older versions of 1&2?

Ys 1+2 for PC and PSP from the early 00s are nearly identical. Where it starts to change is a little before that it's for PSX, then before that is TG16CD which is absolutely incredible, this is the only other one I recommend you play. There is the PC8000 and Nintendo versions which aren't nearly as good but as old school as you can get. I also think it's on MSX and you know that's not going to be fun at all.

i really wonder what they were thinking with this one because it seems like a nearly perfect port aside from those points. the music is slightly improved by having a MT32 but damn.

i wish we got a successor to that game.

You should play Xanadu Next next (haha)
I don't know how similar it is to the original but it's one of the few Falcom games I really liked.

That's such a cool game. Falcom from late 90s to the early 2010s was so magical and amazing. It all fell apart soon after and now all we get are really shitty and generic anime drek.

I actually already played it. It's great. Its not too similar other than some mechanics like backstabbing for extra damage and buying keys to open dungeon doors.

For me it's the Saturn version. Love how it's a game full of potential softlocks but with a plethora of game breaking items that lets you demolish walls, fly or bypass obstacles by teleporting to the next floor, walk a few steps, and then teleport back etc.

Do diagonal inputs still work well in that version?
