I find it hilarious how Xbox One was justifiably criticised for telling customers that their consoles had to always be online to play games (of course, as a form of more control) - yet, you now have a world where people pay monthly to play games they don't actually own and have to have their consoles always online in order to play them. You're all walking the same plank you said you wouldn't - all of which is slowly pulling off what MS was trying to do back then - to gain full control over what you own, and how you play them - but in a slower, more subtle way. My what a difference some years makes.

speak for yourself, homosexual
Microsoft: you will own nothing, and be happy.
We haven't owned our games since steam released
Its too late to complain now
I never supported this homosexual shit, i have all the right to complain. You nignogs ruined gaming for me and i hope you all suffer slowly for it.
Consoles themselves are dying. Most of these games can still be purchased and de-DRM'd (if there's any). I worry more about publishers. The encroachment of online systems in single-player titles and death of server hosting is a more imminent threat to preservation.
There will be a future, where, once a monopoly-like system is reached - prices will rise to cover the initial losses (like Netflix) and accounts will be address/region controlled (like Netflix). Enjoy the little seductive taste you're getting now, because the true intentions of it will rear it's ugly head when it's too late. You knew it here first.
Netflix is dying due to competition from the commodification of video streaming. I'm not sure I see rapid vidya consolidation happening in the medium term. The scenario I see is eventually game streaming may get "figured out". Once they can get the literal game off open platforms, it's impossible to preserve. I thought this was going to happen now with Stadia.
themselves are dying
I will save never let this happen!
Switch is the fifth best selling console of all time and will be the third by the year's end
The PS5 and the Series S/X have been hit by chip shortage yet still pulling numbers
How are consoles dying?
Because PC autists think everyone is as keen to sit at a computer 16 hours a day as they are
I didn't own the games i rented from block buster either.
Don Mattrick was right. The digital market is three times bigger than the physical one, more and more games have a check drm or are live service, despite everything and prices have gone up.
>yet, you now have a world where people pay monthly to play games they don't actually own and have to have their consoles always online in order to play them.
The act of israeliteing is nothing but insidious, people stalward in their conviction will sooner or later be revealed to be few in number as those who wish to charge you up the ass will sweeten the deal enough for the weak willed to give in, by the time the other shoe drops they'll accept it as normal.
The problem with it at the time was there was no legitimate reason for the fricking thing to do that - it was just "we'll have your console check in online or frick you" no matter what you did with it.
Not a real fan of gamepass, but it's not like they're gonna mail you all that shit like gamefly or something. Would you use it if they did?
The reason was "you can share your library with your family" or "you don't need the disk". However, it was the higher price, the Kinect and the lower power that definitely kill them. 1 mistake is acceptable, but not so many, see Sony taking advantage of it by introducing paid online and no one complained
>see Sony taking advantage of it by introducing paid online and no one complained
This was the most mindboggling thing i've seen, sonygays could have stopped it but they were too busy doing victory laps because of an act of corporate trolling. Fast forward a couple of year and they are weeping that Gravity Rush 2 mp servers are shutting down despite the fact they are paying a subscription which allegedly would "maintain multiplayer servers up" and still other sony fanboys didnt come to their aid to prevent it from happening to their favorite games.
could have stopped
All my protesting didn't stop it. I remember everyone being pissed about it. I held out until 2016 when Overwatch came out and ever since role queue was added i stopped being a subscriber. Same thing happened to Nintendo.
>2013
Where did the time go?
2 years of a pandemic will fast forward it a bit
right out the window
Yeah they tried it too early. It's almost 10 years since bone reveal and nowadays anything it tried to force is a norm
the government forced them to do it, it was at the height of the prism program.
you can change platforms like a hermit crab but the cia will just take over any institution, google, reddit or duckduckgo never intended to become evil either.
Yes there are big downsides to relying on gamepass. But there are clear and obvious upside for the consumer as well. And people are comfortable with a subscription model. Part of the problem with XBone was that there was upside to that system for MS and game Publishers, but it was all downside for the consumer. So it just felt like a big corporate "frick you."
>PLEASE REMEMBER 2013 GUYS SONY IS DYING DO NOT REDEEM THE GAMEPASS
Pathetic.
I still do indeed hate it that everything, not just gamepass, seems to be a subscription nowadays, but that's not just microshaft's fault
>yet, you now have a world where people pay monthly to play games they don't actually own
Because it's optional and you can unsubscribe within 30 days max if you don't think the service is worth it.
>pay monthly to play games they don't actually own
RENTING GAMES??? NOOOOO MY HOOARD!! I NEED A 460 GAMES LONG STEAM LIBRARY OF GAMES I'LL NEVER EVEN PLAY
Doncuck wanted to lock the console to online only, price you 70 bucks a pop for digital games and have you set up an obligatory NSA spy cam to watch your every move. Literally the worst gaming CEO ever.
What is the difference with today?
>the most popular games are live service
>many games have drm
>digital games cost 70 dollars / 80 euros
>there are two nextgen consoles without disc drive
>>the most popular games are live service
what does that have to do with Microsoft and gamepass though? Live service games started getting big completely independently a long time ago with stuff like League, PuBG, Fortnite etc.
Also, no standard edition digital game costs 80 euros on xbox, you're thinking of Playstatoin exclusives. But yeah, the fact that full price console games are 10 bucks more expensive than on PC is kind of bullshit, but again, what does that have to do with Microsoft in particular? Sony and Nintendo are doing the same thing.
I was responding to the fact that donmatt wanted the console always online. Nowadays the most popular games have fundamental online components which therefore requires a constant online connection. So today few people have trouble keeping a console online all the time, it's the games themselves that push this. Anyway, even on Xbox nextgen games cost 80 euros, it's not something that MS can stop.
>Anyway, even on Xbox nextgen games cost 80 euros, it's not something that MS can stop.
I dunno, maybe I'm wrong as the only full price game I bought in the last 8 or so years was Elden Ring, but that cost 70 euros for the xbox series x version. I also don't think I remember seeing any games in their shop that are 80 euro unless it's some special edition crap.
Every console platform has a subscription service, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo and they've had that for a very long time, long before the xbox one even. Back then these services just happened to be way worse than now with gamepass and PS+.
It was just too ahead of it's time thinking.
People already hated the xbox brand, and the slightly wrong marketing manovre put the xbox division into the ground.
After that people just fall for the memes, with even playstation making jokes about how to share games on playstation with just handing them to another, and watch TV and so on.
But our savior Phil is doing a great job in managing Xbox and resurrecting it. That man is an hero.
REMINDER THAT SONY MADE GT 6 AN ALWAYS ONLINE GAME DESPITTE IT BEING A MAINLY SINGLE PLAYER GAME. YOU CANT EVEN SAVE IT IFNYOURE OFFLINE.
