Oh boy no it's not. I rode the PS3 Controller carousel i unfortunately know too much, a red one to boot.
One or more of the following is true:
        - the 1 2 3 4 leds are misaligned
        - the reset pinhole doesn't work
        - the controller is too lite
        - the triggers have the wrong spring
        - the sticks are incorrect to the touch

Come one dude open it up show us the battery.
For PS3 controllers you either get a busted old black one or a knockoff which can be of acceptable quality, it's the best you'll get anyway.

Literally all of this is COD kid moron rumor garbage. DS3 has multiple revisions and some are pretty extreme. For example the difference in weight between the first revision and the later one sis massive as the first revision has so many more parts in it including a circuit board that takes up the entire shape of the controller whereas the later revisions have only a sliver of circuit board in a light weight plastic frame. The analog sticks are also different, for example the first edition sticks have 4 pins and are sodded on while the later revisions only have 3 and are mechanically held in place by bent pins. Each analog stick feels different as well.

Stop spreading this fricking moronation still.

If anyone is trying to buy a PS3 controller but can't find a genuine one, just buy a Sixaxis (not DualShock) without rumble. Those are rarely bootlegged and you can tell they're real just by seeing if there's translucent plastic on the front.

I got one from a small used game website, a black one in great condition. It's genuine.
If you're in doubt you confirm with SCP toolkit on a PC.

The tell for a fake is that the buttons aren't pressure sensitive, which you can test simply by feeling if they "click" or can gently depress.

I need a new one. I lent my only controller to my neighbour because he was having a bunch of friends over I guess, and I got it back all sticky and some of the buttons aren't registering properly. I have no clue what normalgays get up to playing NHL or whatever.

I have to deal with mine that are more sensible in one horizontal direction than the opposite and i found recently that they left analog stick does not read the full range of motion in one very specific direction but the only game that registers this issue is MGS4.

There would be no issue with PS3 controllers if those homosexuals at ALPS actually had the proper analog stick model that's supposed to go on DS3.

oh and they randomly turn off and the game does not even register as the being turned off until like 20 seconds after. Sometimes it will happen multiple times in one day, some times it won't happen for a whole week.

People like to talk shit about replaceable batteries, but I have like 50 working Xbox 360 controllers and maybe 5 PS3 controllers. The 360 pad doesn't fricking quit. The Dualshock 3's batteries are all expanding and about to blow and the triggers will snap off if you look at them wrong. (I buy them in lots and refurbish them, clean them, and replace sticks, and batteries.)

    360 controller > DualShock 3

The only benefit to the shitty controller is that I get to charge PlayStation 3 owners more money :^)

Never seen a single DS3 battery bloat. In fact i still have my launch day SixAxis batteries around even though i think they are the wrong voltage for DS3.

I've repaired maybe 30 of them and of the 30 about 10 were uncomfortably bloated.

I've become extremely paranoid about my rechargeable batteries dying in my controllers and 3DS.
That said, my DS3 from 2009 isn't bloated despite spending extended periods of time with no charge.

I have been using that same controller for 15 years as my main controller, red color as well. The big problem with it are the shoulder buttons, but other than that I don't quite get why it's so hated.

      >15 year old PS3 controller

You gays must play video games one hour a month. It's practically statistically impossible to have a 15 yea old DS3 without the sticks drifting,

I have two, they're both fine. I have beaten exactly 273 games in the last 15 years. (Not all with that controller)

    - PS button has the wrong transparency or is misprinted or has the wrong shape
    - the d-pad is hollow or lose
    - the select or start prints are misaligned
    - the usb print is not centered
    - wrong font for SIXAXIS
    - injection witness mark is the wrong size

But after all if you've played a lot of videogames, you know the second you hold it.

The supply is limited. They are not made anymore.

There are tons of counterfeits floating around. Guaranteed to be fake if you buy new, and quite likely if you buy used. It's just hard to find real DS3s.

since the majority of people are braindead mongoloids, and gaymers especially, the number of legit controllers which will hold up over the years is limited.

      Anonymous

There's a very limited supply of them and even more limited supply of ones without issues such as drifting. DS3 after the initial version have very cheap construction especially the potentiometer analog assembly which is literally rated for only 6 months of "enthusiast" (read non normalgay) use. Friendly reminder that DS2 has technology that prevented drifting and made the controller sort of auto calibrate itself even if it had mechanical drifting after the user wiggled the stick around.

Planned obsolescence is shit people should be lynching CEOs for but no one cares and are just content to take it up the ass.

    I have a sixaxis
I bought it overused, cleaned it up well, and damn. It served me fairly well until I got my 8bitdo. I got a DS4 and it just didn't feel the same. The d-pad on the sixaxis somehow feels just right. I don't know if it's the abuse or if a new one would feel like this.

If you want to know if the the controller is genuine or fake, shake the controller to the right or left and see if the waves are moving in the way you are shaking it
