I fucking hate Fallout

I just took a huge shit in the potty
I just took a huge fallout in the potty
I just fell in to the potty
Amazing. See op? This is how you make an interesting story.
You lack creativity my child, the fallout devs literally come up with new stuff with every new fallout release.
eh only the first fallout game was really any good; fallout 2 slightly; but definitely none of the garbage since then.
It just sucks because I think I’ll come up with a good idea but it ends up just being a mismatch of two ideas that have already been done. For example I came up with this idea of the main antagonist of my story being remnants of the Russian military (the main energy against the US) occupying a old military base and turning it into a thriving settlement. They manufacture weapons and ammunition and give it out to wastelanders and raiders to keep the wasteland in a continued state of chaos and war, which leads to people surrendering their rights and freedom to the Russians in exchange for safety. Their main goal is to rebuild the soviet union on US soil and to undermine American ideals and build a new empire from the ashes of the failed USA, but it just feels like a mashup of the enclave, the NCR, and the gun runners from 2/NV, which drives me insane because I didn’t even think of those groups until after I came up with the idea
If you are a writer you should focus on writing fundamentals and honing in on a good story rather than half baked shitty fan-fic tier world building. The Road is a great post-apocalypse book despite there being almost zero world building outside of the premise.
Well I already have a good story with themes and overarching plot that money has done yet, I’m just trying to world build right now and come up with a antagonist that can play into the story’s themes and messages
You're either very very young or just a weird delusional adult. I can tell because you don't know the first thing about writing if you really think your biggest obstacle is that the fallout video game series has had some similar ideas.
You need to:
1. Read more
2. Actually write, a whole lot more.
t. published author
Are you rich
A lot of the most famous and recognized artists in history, died miserable and poor you fucking idiot. If you do any type of art for only fame and money you might as well just blow your brains out now. You should do art because you want something in your head to exist and people to enjoy it, whether it's 1 guy or 1 million guys.
This. t. also an author
Execution is really all that matters, but you can put original twists on things if you want.
>caring about originality
>as a writer
lul, just don’t. if you’re story is interesting and you’re writing is good people will come.
at some point you realize every idea has been thought of and implemented. You have to be a writer that creates the things around that idea that make your work standout compared to everything else thats been done.
Sounds cool, anon. Do it.
dude who fucking cares about if some shit in the world feels slightly similar to other things, learn how to write good characters first, that's the hard part, endless worldbuilding is not only time consuming but also the easiest fucking thing in the world to write about.
How can fallout be so presentó in your writing, I mean a lot of fallout ideas only work on their vision of the futuristic 50 they had, they dont touch like a fuckton of ideas because of that limitation
You know that Fallout itself takes heavy inspiration from many different pieces of media Mad Max being the biggest, right? All you’re saying is that you lack creativity, maybe not do a nuclear post apocalypse maybe try a plague or natural disaster like a mega volcano.
Look into more post apocalyptic books/movies/games
t. have had an idea for a post apocalyptic game for years but too incompetent to make it
anon, there are no new "ideas" anymore. literally every stupid shit has already been thought about. it's all about implementation. so what if your nuclear post-apoc world is similar to fallout? practically every one has a few similarities. just go for it, man.
I nearly took the bait
You're a shit writer
Name something new and original about the post apocalyptic genre that fallout, mad max, metro, the last of us, etc haven’t done yet
>be me
>karstaag
>dead for hundreds of years
>resting in peace
>awoken by autistic dragon man
>get reasonably pissed
>slam my club into the earth
>send dragon loser flying into space
>go back to being dead
>mfw
>>be me
another newfag?
Dude Fallout ripped off another series called Wasteland which in term ripped off Mad Max. It's not as original as you may think it is.
A Boy and His Dog
That too. Every popular fiction franchise just pulls things from fiction that came before and tweaks it for it's story.
GTA Vice City is basically "Scarface meets Miami Vice" and it wears it's inspiration on it's sleeve. Literally in some cases.
Hello I just wanted to say that I really like this post. Thank you for posting it.
Fallout has a thousand paper thin stories. Pick your favourite and actually give it some depth. A story about two sons of a barely surviving farmer; one joins a raider gang and the other goes looking for him, experiences the horrors of the wasteland, finds his brother, sees him hooked on chems and to save him also joins the raiders. Initially he hates them but as he gets to know the other gang members and why they joined it begins to make sense. He gets embroiled in a gang war, initially just being forced to stay with them until his brother is in a stable state due to his chem addiction. Eventually becomes a true believer, a raider friend is murdered and he joins the return raid. Dramatic fight scene, everyone on both sides dead except him. Horror as he finds his brother ODed back at camp while no one was there to keep him off drugs. Returns home to the farm as he has nothing left; his father has been killed and farm looted as the sons were not there to protect him. Stricken with guilt and grief, starts his own raider gang to get revenge on the one who killed his father. End there. The cycle repeats.
Its all about the drama and personal relationships and how they are affected by the post apocalyptic environment. Doesn't matter if its robots or mutants or big greedy corporations or low level raiders. Fallout was always paper thin; so you will create something deep and meaningful.
Fuck that’s a good ass idea. Why can’t I think of something good and interesting like that. I’m such a shit writer
It's neither good nor interesting; it sounds like what a high schooler would write while trying to be "deep'. You're a shit writer because you can't identify interesting ideas and concepts.
And as
said, good writing has very little to do with autistic worldbuilding or artificial, forced story progression like
. The Road is literally about a father and son walking down a road. Shit, I could sit down right now and write a post-apocalyptic story that takes place entirely inside a single house and it would be more interesting than some video game soap opera drama.
What you write about doesn't matter. HOW you write about it is what matters.
Absolutely correct
>forced story progression
I remember when I was a pretentious college gay like this anon. He's wrong. Big and somewhat crazy events are what make stories interesting. No one wants to read, watch or play something that isn't a little bit mad. The madness should be justified down the line, like Putin invaded Ukraine because of NATO expansionism, or Hitler went against the garden gnomes because they staged a coup at the end of the war to try and take over Germany and had their banks ruin the lives of the citizens with inflation forcing women into prostitution and men to suicide. Initially the stories are exciting because they seem mad though; the first idea of Putin and Hitler wanting to take over the world is exciting. A raider leader who seems to want to do the same is also exciting; then as the story progresses and you explain that raider's childhood and backstory and his true aims; it suddenly all makes sense and isn't unbelievable.
You want to hook people with crazy and exciting though. Pretentious gays who don't like big dramatic events in stories have no friends and have never actually enjoyed a good pub or campfire story. Convey a message in the story (GRRM is a hack; messageless stories are a waste of time), make it exciting, make it dramatic, and have seemingly unpredictable and crazy things happen (because they do happen in real life, and it is because they happened that the story is told and not just another boring event that no ever mentions; explaining why they happened down the line and putting a moral message on it at the end makes it a great novel).
This but with every third-person dark fantasy combat being compared to Souls.
but do you REALLY have the mindset of someone who can create the fallout universe?
I’m not a liberal gay so no
post your writing so that i may laugh at you
I weep for people who played Fallout, but don't know about Vic & Blood.
Maybe become a bit more well read? You sound like one of those dudes that think fantasy genre consists of GoT, LotR, Harry Potter, and nothing else.
Nothing in Fallout is new just write whatever
>he thinks the universe and setting is everything
>not the people and characters within it
bro if you don't even understand that people want stories about people not wastelands and autistic worldbuilding just stop now and be a plumber or get into HVAC because you aren't as inherently artistic or intuitive on the subject of art as you seem to think you are. Listen, I don't care what setting you think is going to blow everyone away and make you millions because of how fucking cool and edgy your brand new autistic setting is, no one fucking cares. If there isn't an interesting and well written cast of characters you might as well wipe your ass with whatever first draft you made and forget about it.
It's just an autism thing, they can't help it. You never noticed what type of people spend hours talking about "worldbuilding" and never once mention characters?
I dunno if I'm missing something but hat's what turned me off of Dune. Like what autistic gay thinks spoiling the fact that the protagonist eventually becomes space jesus and a wiki paragraph on the world is a good idea?
>people want stories about people not wastelands and autistic worldbuilding
Warhammer 40K is basically just that. some do just want wastelands and worldbuilding.
40k fans are autistic gays
>caring tbis much about "originality"
Dude just stop right now because you aren't an artist, you jist want to nail some kind of epic and super original magnum opus on your first try that's going to totally blow everyone away instead of just making something that's good. you're just a jealous nobody who fantasizes about making a splash in an industry you have zero experience in. I've been running into a lot of gays recently who see shit on TV, play vidya, or read a book and think "hurrrr i can totally do better even though i've never tried or even have the balls to show anyone what i've actually done"
Fallout hasn't done gay morons yet.
I see a good opportunity, OP.
>1950's post nuclear war america
>theres nothing more to be done
Get creative you fucking sperg
Make it take place in another country
There is no "Fallout: Brazil" or "Fallout: India"
You just suck at being "original"
Maybe write an actually realistic post apocalypse. Fallout lore is sort of retarded so if you are producing something similar you are obviously on the wrong track.
ITT:
>these idiots just don't understand my work, but they will
>god I'm just like lovecraft
Read Roadside Picnic instead of getting inspirations from goyslop post-apocalypse media.
>>be me
a newfag?
I mean, I'm in a similar situation only the game is Skyrim. Then again with enough time and creative juice, I think Im spinning my own thing. On a surface level, the basic ingredients are still there( 2 factions engaged in conflict, a third one moving the strings "from the shadows", an ancient menace coming back to life while a hero of legend coincidentally reappears)You could play a lot with the motivations behind certain events or change the order in which they take place.
In my case its a comic format but it should work in a text only setting too, th e possibilities are nearly endless.
write. dont bother with plagiarism. i'd fucking switch our lives just to have the ability to write.
Your creativity is shit. There's shit tons of post-apocalypse media out there that's now "nukes dropped, now crazy people with guns are everywhere".
Take "Humanity has Declined" for example, whether you like weeb shit or not, satirical comedy set in post-apocalypse with fairy-tale-esque world, is pretty original, and the fact the author managed to run the novel for 10 years, without entering the tropes of Mad Max or Fallout, shows that making an original post-apocalypse novel without being troupe-y is possible.
Now, stop whining on 4 chan that you can't come up with anything new. You just haven't twisted your brain enough.
your book was never going to be good if this torpedo'd it. maybe you should just write good characters or interesting plots instead of being a gay about "lore".
Why don't you make a smaller-scale story instead of trying to make a grand post-apocalyptic adventure. Like "murder-mystery but the set in post-apocalypse".
You know no one is going to read a book that some nobody wrote about John Protagonist with cigars walking around the wasteland shooting things.
are you fucking kidding me? fallout is the most boring post apocalypse because they refuse to go into the scary real stuff like how humanity would devolve into rape gangs (mad max ring a bell?) and how radiation is REALLY FUCKING BAD FOR YOU not lol drinks radiation juice, like fallout.
tldr: take out the whacky shit obviously, you creatively bankrupt fail.
Nah I agree I’m not doing that stupid “radiation gives u super powers lol”. I wanted it to be a bit more realistic but also delve into the fantasy genre as well. I just get mad when I think I come up with a cool idea for a bunch of tribes and factions but then realize either fallout or some other post apocalyptic book/game/film already did it
>be me
>aspiring bookwriter
>not very creative
>copy themes from popular sci fi
>see fallout
>see the same themes
>react emotionally to fallout because I dont have the capacity to realise that I was the uninspired one all along
Fallout is fucking stupid anyway. The only unique twist it has is being futuristic retro 1950s and even that is really fucking stupid when you think about it. It’s literally just Mad Max but with muh retros 1950s xD
It's stupid but it's fun. The point of good writing isn't to create something unique all the time, it's about telling a story in a captivating way. In that regard I love New Vegas and its side quests but yeah, it's a lot of wank
I don’t think the futuristic 50s aesthetic is very good tbqhwyf. In fact I think it’s one of the weaker aspects to Fallout in general. That’s why I love New Vegas for basically getting rid of that shit and only keeping it in small doses. Fallout 1 and 2 is more tolerable but even 2 is pushing it.
There are no original ideas OP, it's all about execution and putting your own spin on it. Fallout isn't hurting your creativity, you are sabotaging yourself.
Tolkien flat out stole stories from and even languages from countless places. LotR is full of references to Christianity and Hinduism, there is clear inspiration from the Finnish sagas and European history of coming together to ward off the attacks of the muslims with Helms Deep basically being the siege of Vienna.
The key is tying all of it together and making a coherent narrative with a good message at the end. To be honest Tolkien might have been a bit too on the nose with same of his names; Rohan for instance is a Huguenot monastery town in Brittany that supplied Elizabeth I with knights and famously her chief knight (he got some award though I don't remember what it was) was the leader of the Rohan Commune. So English nu-history takes the exact name of now-English monastery that was known in history for cavalry/knights and makes them a faction that is all about cavalry.
Its a bit on the nose, but as few know anything about history Tolkien gets away with it. Anyway Tolkien is still great, Im just making the point he had lots of influences and he never tried to hide it.
Fallout is just a post-apocalyptic story in the most generic sense with some wackiness thrown in. Even then it was just copied from other media (A Boy And His Dog for example). If you really can't put your own spin on such a generic formula then maybe you need to take a step back and start consuming other media, writing smaller stories, that sort of shit.
> but I wanted to fill the world with a bunch of crazy, deep shit like Tolkien did
yeah dude... I want a write super deep shit like Tolkien man... its 100% going to be good, like so good to a point Im gonna be like the second Tolkien.... The book is going to have a lore with a size of bible dude... but writing is so difficult man, oh well time to whine on Ganker and play video game for my "research", instead of practicing writing.
I know I’ll never truly be like Tolkien, I’m just saying he’s a big inspiration to me.
fallout is just gnomish fantasy
their ideal future
Unironic skill issue
If your idea of a post apocalypse is just a one a one for one of fallout which as it is just vanilla with a time setting twist, then you cant be very creative.
If you want an unique example of unique post-post apocalypse take a look at kenshi, the games setting is very one of a kind
being an insecure writer
you may want to stop and try something easier like drawing.
Actually start reading and writing actual literature instead of fucking pleb genre fiction bullshit
I just finished reading a trilogy that starts off and describes itself as generic dark fantasy with a medieval theme, but as you get into it you slowly realise its set on a post apocalyptic earth that wiped out all writing and technology.
Its pretty cool because once you realise you underatand that what the characters call spirits is actually ai projections, and cursed people and locations are just radiation effects.
I thought it was fairly original for a post apocalypse story.
You do realize Fallout stole 80% (if not more) of its shit from Mad Max right?
It took a bit from Hell comes to Frogtown as well.
Look at the emblem for Med Tek from that movie and then look at Vault Tecs logo
to add
Panic in the year Zero had a low-key big impact on Fallout.
>writing a book set in post-post apocalyptic wasteland
>literally almost every single fucking idea I’ve had is either already done by fallout or is too similar to something fallout has done
if your starting point was "i want to write a story set in post apocalyptic wastleland" than i think that is your problem. a million people do the same thing. think of a good concept to write about, and if it aligns with that setting than go for it. if something ends up being too similar to fallout then challenge yourself to switch it up in an interesting way
fuckin write it anyway pussy
bethesda isn't doing shit with fallout
why don't you write something wholesome and enlightening like tolkien managed to and keep that sort of north star in mind when it comes to the matter of whether something deserves to be created at all
because i can fucking tell you most people's swill might as well have never been regurgitated concerning fiction. very little has added anything serious to human culture of any note at all
try and fix the problem instead of compounding it kthx <3
>"was this inspired by Fallout?"
>no
wow so difficult
also this exact same thing happened to gibson in his penning of neuromancer when he went out and saw blade runner during his writing of it and after the initial seismic shock at seeing so many themes he was trying to convey aped really well by the film he managed to up his game and better delineate his own setting which by all means is a utterly core and bedrock take of what cyberspace can be (and already is in some respects, go try second life for the closest it has come so far)
basically write a story that substantiates itself as something valuable or show off a setting so wild and strange that it can stand on its own
even being an absolute tolkien cocksucker i enjoy stuff like some of the horus heresy books for the outlandish scifi described therein
There can't be a single good Fallout thread in Ganker anymore
