It is basic and simplistic, so what exactly is the problem for calling it what it is? Whole story and characters you can summarize it in like 3 sentences because there is no complexity and the combat is as basic as a turn based combat could possibly get.

That's kind of up to you but Bravely Default is extremely close to how 5 functions with ability sharing and lets you use more than just 1-3 other abilities from other jobs. Octopath just lets you have a secondary job and has some other quirks.

I prefer having characters stuck in a niche. The "everyone can excel anywhere and is an above average Red Mage" is what I don't like about 6, 7, or 8. At least 6's Esper boosts are locked, 7 and 8 allow for too much on-the-fly customization.
I'm also the kind of person who likes 3 DS's Job Adjustment phase.

4 is mid in a lot of ways. The story is all over the place and feels stream of consciousness at times. You can't customize your party until very late in the game.

What's not mid is how the combat mechanics play into the story. Chefs kiss on that, but overall, the design goals of 4 were accomplished much more fully in 6.

What makes you say that? I think it had the most fully realized version of ATB in the series and magicite was mostly a great system.
I think the beginning of the game suffers from lack of mechanical complexity because the World of Balance is essentially one long tutorial, but once you're in the World of Ruin the game really opens up and becomes one of the most mechanically interesting in the whole series.

              Anonymous

Everything makes me say that. FFVI is the game that broke ATB by letting it run during animations, by the way.

I genuinely don't understand why they've only ever used the job system on 3, 5, 11 and 14. It's one of the most iconic things about the series.

it doesn't, they just forced the series because they already had sunk so much money on it, they couldn't backtrack by that point on the PS3's life.

        >Undubs
Yes? There area a few, and/or making sure you get a proper version of the game that includes the JP audio as well (ie FFXII's PC edition called The Zodiac Age for instance is the definitive version of the game. Likewise, the FFX and FFX-2 Remaster)

As for actual undub mods, one of the first ones that needs them is Final Fantasy IV (3D Remake). The PC version on Steam is the best version of the 3D variant, but stupid SE didn't include the JP audio. Thankfully there IS a mod that returns it. There are also mods for other things like if you want the classic Nintendo DS font, and/or you want higher framerates in battle (but some of those are wonky and not really worth it). For those playing Final Fantasy IV, I suggest either A) emulating the PSP "Complete Collection" edition, which is the most content heavy 2D version of the game and also comes with the sequel The After Years 2d version. Unfortunately the "pixel remaster" version is very similar to a baseline SNES version (at least its the standard JP release version I think as opposed to the Western FF2us "easy type" which removed abilities like Cecil's Darkness wave among other simplifications and name changes) which may or may not be what you want but the PSP has more content than the SNES, GBA , PS1 etc.. and other versions. or B) Get the 3D Remake version on PC with mods for JP audio , which has a good bit of new content and other improvements on depth/new stuff in its own way , and then there's a FFIV The After Years 3D Remake version also on Steam if you're interested in continuing the story.

        Good luck anon!

Consider that the next game in the series, 12, was made with very similar mechanics yet is much more approachable and far more fluid.

not him but I've played it recently and it's not any different - just the taking out and putting away animations of your weapons takes WAY longer than it feels like it should, and this happens every single time you encounter an enemy
every little thing in the game is like that, the game feels designed to waste your time

It's really not slow at all. There's increased movement speed now, you can level to 99 within a day, everything skills up extremely quickly, you can solo everything with trusts, and you can mount anywhere at any time except for dungeons. The only remaining complaint is about the UI which comes from mouse and keyboard players.

FF2 feels like a series of incomplete ideas more than most games in the series to me. It was released slightly less than a year after 1. That's insanely low dev time. While I think it has a lot of cool ideas, I think the execution leaves something to be desired.

FFIII may be just a prototype for V but it's still a more than fine game in its own right. It's also cozy as hell once you get the airship and literally get to live on the thing while flying around.

It was just a streamlined version of Ultima's dialogue system, it has no reason to exist when you could simply write prepackaged dialogue choices, that's why Ultima eventually dropped manual typing for NPC dialogues too, nobody liked spamming keywords on dozens of NPCs that didn't even have answer for any of them.
It's one of the few things from FF2 that didn't even make it to SaGa.

I finally played 13 for the first time and I wasn't too disappointed by it. I think it plays to its strengths of being linear well with how the combat is designed.
Ironically the only thing that falls apart, at least imo, is when actual side quests open up because to me this is not a battle system designed with grinding battles over and over. I ended up abandoning side content but the main game scenario is decent at least.

Frick that, X started FF's downhill roll imo. NES, SNES, and PS1 FFs all had world maps where you can get vehicles to traverse them. Starting with X, you get more hallways, no overworld, no meaningful vehicle travel. Comat system and sphere grid was cool though

Don't play the pixel remaster of 6. Use an SNES emulator and get the Ted Woolsey uncensored version. It was the original script before jap business men and us localizers tainted it. Also comes with all of the good changes that modern versions fix that weren't in the SNES version. It's the best looking, most true to the original vision, and most polished with modern fixes version of the game.

It fixes problems the original had but removes some things too.

            >Original had Vancian-esque Casting as in no MP but times you can cast a spell before needing to rest but no way to recover charges save sleeping at an Inn or using Tents/Cabins, forcing you to play more conservatively with spells, PR adds items to restore spell charges in dungeons.
            >Original had the Peninsula of Power glitch (Enemy Cluster of a higher level is in a lower level area on the map which is good for grinding levels at) which has been removed in PR
            >Original had spells that do not work, that has been fixed in PR.

If you want a definitive version of FF1 but without the extra dungeons like in the PS/GBA/PSP versions, this is your go to.

I replayed 1-6 via PR recently

1 is always a fun game, not much to complain about
    >2 starts out really fun if you actually get into the leveling system. The game has a lot of good ideas that are just poorly applied and not intuitive, like various status effects targeting different resistances (Silence and Fog are the same, but target Body and Mind resistance, respectively). It's extremely tedious by the end
3 is actually very fun, especially if you play it without min/max optimization autism. I like how little direction you get a times.
    >4 is 4. It's a great game with a terrific Act 1. I don't think there's a ton of variety and combat is very straight forward at the end, but I don't have any real big complaints.
5 is wonderful and I always liked it. Even better than I remember even if PR isn't perfect. Again, don't min/max autism like 3 and the game remains a great challenge and lots of fun right up to the end. I like limiting each Job to a single character.
    >6 is my favorite game, a lot of it is nostalgia. I can't think of anything to say about it. Fun systems if you, once again, limit yourself. Also very fun if you want to just break the game and steamroll the finale. Lots of options and the large cast is the best part.

The NES version is clunky as shit, buggy as shit, the script is garbage, and the spell charge system was rightfully replaced with MP.
It needs these QoL changes to actually be worth a damn today.

13-2 is sort of unoptimized, but the dips aren't too painful. I played through the entire game of 13-2 on a 3 year old V17 Nitro and it was still comfortable. 13 is a 64 gb mess that has some mods, but it doesn't crash? It doesn't dip too much on a 2060 xc, but it's still noticeable.

ATB feels fricking awful to play with so far
I don't know if it's an issue with the Pixel Remaster, but in 5 I can't keep track of fricking anything seeing as you are pushed to rush through menuing and ATB speeds seem all over the place between fights so I can't just intuit the turn order. Deciding whether to heal or not is a pain in the dick as well because I can't parse any health/MP information at a glance because its just a giant block of numbers on a background that is brighter than them for some ungodly reason. The only way I can even tell whose turn it's supposed to be is looking at whose name is highlighted so through a single turn I need to scan my eyes across the entire bottom half of the screen as well at the enemy half of the top or my parties half if I'm healing at least 4 times and the eye strain just compounds over and over seeing as I seem to stumble into a random encounter every 3 god damn steps. The entire UI looks like it's straight out of someone's first RPGM game and needing to scan it over and over at light speed or the enemy will get in free turns is nauseating.
Also the enemy designs suck fricking shit compared to DQ, no internal consistency at all and clash violently with the tiny character sprites that are made with like 3 individual pixels, I am vomit.

FIX THE PIXEL REMASTER FONT YOU Black person THERE ARE A TON OF FONT PACKS IT'S A DRAG AND DROP REPLACE JUST GOOGLE ONE AND GET IT N I G G E R THAT SHIT IS HIDEOUS

I'm glad you're enjoying it though. Final Fantasy I isn't so much the subject of "contrarianism", merely being the most simple of the games and very very janky on Famicom. It's still quite fun and has some clever design, namely in how you can do the four main dungeons entirely out of order with the "intended" route.

  32. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

Enjoy it, avoid the fanbase, though. Don't take the games too seriously either. As a kid they're some of the coolest shit you'll ever experience, but their age shows greatly now. The games that really stand out are 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13-2

They all have flaws, but you'll have a hard time finding other jrpgs quite like what I listed. Not arguing over which game I listed is "shit." The only legitimately and objectively bad FF games I can think of are Explorers and World of FF. Everything else is subjectivity.

I think Americans just don't understand the concept of a "love hotel" so they can't really make sense of Honeybee Inn without thinking of it as a brothel

        Anonymous

The most amusing bit of dialogue from Honey Bee Inn is this right here

        >Old Woman
        >What's wrong, Grandpa? You keep sighing.

        >Old Man
        >...wheez... puff... You know, Grandma...

        >Old Woman
        >You talking about this room?

        >Old Man
        >...whew... I know our son rented this for us and all, but...
        >It's too nice for us. Big round bed, gorgeous tub, I just can't get comfortable.

        >Old Woman
        >Don't worry about it. It's a high class neighborhood, in the Big City.
        >You keep complainin' and we'll get in trouble.

In case you didn't catch that because of the dodgy translation, life in the slums is so shitty that a love motel in the ghetto is considered extravagant to the 2 old people there. But what's even more amusing is that Shinra executives routinely take a train from the top of the Plate to slum it up in Honey Bee Inn. The old couple talks about how their son got a promotion to Department head (Reeve? I'll have to check that). But right next door there are Shinra executives playing out a satanic ritual because I guess that's the only way he can get off now.

So the Honey Bee Inn is simultaneously this seedy hotel in the slums that also is frequented by high paying patrons.

i don't consider it a remake whatsoever, it's more like a re imagination of a prequel to FF1 with META flavor thrown at it, that said it was still a fun run given i only played through the vanilla base game, i keep hearing good things about the DLCs.

FF1 is very good, I played it in 2012 I think, I wish they released another one just like it but with a couple more QoL features, the level of freedom and discovery is great but I'd rather have enemies on the field for such a game, Romancing SaGa comes a bit close but a lot of mechanics and "features" are a bit too obscure to find on your own and it has no "world map"

I'm sad there aren't more JRPGs that play like FF1. Yeah the SaGa games are similar like you said.

I actually kind of enjoyed FF15 because I played it a bit like FF1 and ignored the story and just wandered around camping.

There's the DS SaGa remakes if the later SaGa are too much for you, they also have a world map but they're pretty linear, it's the closest you're ever gonna get to FF1 considering they're made by the same designer.
Otherwise you can play Metal Max or some DQ like DQ3, neither are as complex as a SaGa game and they still retain the same level of freedom of progression.

XIV is not even a RPG, same as XVI. Yoship just doesn't like stuff with depth, there's zero customization in the games he makes, it's just garbage for casuals.

As an experience FFXIV is great, I had a great time with the story and I met a lot of cool people there. I'd recommend going through the story and doing all the side content to anyone.
But as a game it's real fricking lame. The combat system sucks, the overwhelming majority of enemy encounters boil down to using your 1-2-3 combo and avoiding easy to avoid ground telegraphs, the overworld is useless and 99% of the sidequests are a waste of your time.

        Anonymous

99% of the side quests are a waste of time because there's no customization in the game, your only progression is ilvl and making a ilvl progression of 300 ilvl to 302 ilvl is just fricking boring. In other rpgs you get progress like going from a sword to a divine sword that does more damage to zombies or a fire sword that gives a burn dot, but in this game it's just flat numbers going up, it's just so dull.

There's also zero choice in how to progress your character or how you'd like to tackle the problems in the game, so there's basically no problem solving in the game, it's like an arcade game, the only thing that matters is reaction times.

The game is also extremely antisocial, there's zero incentives for you to make friends and depend on other people, people are easily replaceable for anything you'd want in the game besides maybe ultimate/savage raids.

There was a time nearly eight years ago the game had a comfy community of RPGgays and weebs. Now the average XIV player hasn't even played a single RPG. It's facebook tier normies, WoWgays and the "mentally ill" obsessed with drama. Frick. I remember back when Void Ark was first released and the boys were in chat yelling about Skies of Acradia. Do not play XIV, though I guess there is no point even trying to warn Ganker, this place has massively degraded as well.

10-2 is worth playing for seeing the absolute peak of the battle / job system in the series.

None of the other mainline or tactics series are worth playing. 7Remake is worth playing depending on how much enjoyed 7.

12 is too easy, but playing the zodiac version with the Struggle for Freedom difficulty mod was the best experience I've ever had with a FF in my life, the game is SO FRICKING FUN with a difficulty mod, like holy shit. 12 was the first FF game to revisit the world of a previous FF game. Also, to this day, I still maintain the firm belief that FF12 wasn't originally meant to be a mainline FF game. It smacks of a FF Tactics sidestory or gaiden. Mainline FF games never had that political focus like FF Tactics had... and here we are in a mainline FF game, in the FF Tactics worlds of Ivalice with a politically focused story

The political intrigue in Matsuno games always gets shoved aside when it gets revealed that demons were behind all of it. It's probably because Square-enix execs didn't believe a game about politics would be well-received so they force him to change it.

That's all well and good but he doesn't really write politics in an interesting way. Aim for a nation etc. etc. Just moralism all the way down. A good political story will explore things more...passionately. Ex. You can simplify Napoleon and make his story very full by saying it was all just glory. But if you show what glory is....! Matsuno doesn't know and so he can't write it.

Good, I'm glad you enjoy it. I hope later versions were faster than the NES game. I tried replaying it a little while ago, and frick the original runs slow. It is fun to run through this game with different team setups. Something like Monks and White Mages for a quick game, stocking up on Fighters and Red/Black Mages for something more expensive.

I hear there are a few spinoffs that capture the four-dudes-with-classes feel of the original. The Four Heroes of Light is one. Bravely Default uses the same classes. Both are from Square, as well.

Final Fantasy 2 is quite a bit different. The series doesn't stick with that style, if you don't like it. If you do, then FF2 basically spreads out into the Final Fantasy Legend games, then the Romancing SaGa titles, then the rest of SaGa.

What did people forget? What did YOU forget? Etc. Can a game make you remember? Or in other terms, is there a spark still there and can it grow back into a flame.
The romance is tied to this as well...because first romance is "remembering" how to be that, especially for a man.

It's an extension on VII's story. Cloud had to create himself through willpower. The romance, Tifa, helped him when he was almost lost.
In VIII the construction is more dire...it's not Squall, but the world itself.
"It already happened. Now we're writing the future."

They will never write something like VII or VIII again probably. The stories were told through the game, not dialogue, and they lack the ability to do this now.

No. You could strip all the dialogue and the main story would still be told. The fine points could be many different ways. This is why the translation does not matter. It's like a myth. You can tell it a dozen different ways. The core will carry each way through.

If you think FF7 is fun without any story, great. But the game doesnt tells its story only with gameplay.

I understand your position, and agree largely. My use of understanding is less of "able to explain" and more of a "got the message" type of understanding.
I think you do understand Chinese action movies generally.
Ex. Fellini films...and other similar films. You will "Get" them. But maybe you will struggle to explain it. Same with Lynch.

When Tifa is in the lifestream running...and calling for Cloud. And then finds herself there, with him splintered. It is the same sort of thing you could see in a film without dialogue. And you would "get it".
This is my major point I suppose. Newer FFs lack this quality.

Not really, lynch's whole thing is how the mistery is the story, but you cant project the same interpretation to every other work.

And i dont even think it is a matter of perspective, when you see a jrpg with as much dialogue as ff7, there is not a "i can see the tiny characters and it will be enough to understand it" because it is not true. You can enjoy the game, but you can never say things like
                >Understand the story. They are quibbling on autistic details because they are autistic.
when we are talking about concrete plot elements that are writen.

Sure, at the end of the day i know this wont change how you see these games. But i just think you meant "i want a game where i can have fun even when skipping the story"
But saying "i got the plot even by skipping it" or "ff7 doesnt need any dialogue" is crazy

Oh no, I didn't mean that at all. What I meant to say is that the composition (events, scenes, visuals, audio) is so strong that it SENDS the essence of the work to the player even without dialogue or exposition.
I prefer the games to have exposition, and enjoy the exposition (as well as the dialogue.)
But I think that excellent composition is one element missing from newer FFs.
And of course, the text does "sharpen" the image. Taking it away from pure expression to something more concrete as you said.
I hope this helps make my position more clear.

I get what you're trying to say, but i feel like most FFs still have that, the difference is how you dont have to use that part of your brain because characters have voices now.
But lets use FF15 as example, even if you dont pay any attention to what those characters are saying, the whole roadtrip with your bros where you need to find a blonde haired girl that you like is easy to understant.

XV certainly has spectacle. But it's less able to pull the viewer in. The story-boarding transmits information, but it does not send the essence...and for this reason I still do not know what the essence of XV was.
But maybe you are right and I simply didn't understand.
The last game I thought had this strong composition was X.
If you or anyone else can help me see what I am missing about XV (or the XIII's), then I would be glad to hear it. I might just be wrong, it's true.

That movie is great but aside being super soldiers, theit purpose is different from sephiroth in a way that sephiroth is unique and also used to be a simbol of shinra. Sephiroth is more like a mix of that concept with Jenova, who is The Thing. This is why he is so manipulative

Shinra dug up what they thought was an Ancient, named Jenova. But Jenova was actually a planet-eating alien.
Shinra then tried to revive the Ancients by injecting Sephiroth with Jenova's cells in the womb.
When Sephiroth got close to Jenova at Nibelheim she started fricking with his head and led him to Gast's research on Jenova and his own creation, which mindbroke him so she could convince him to come get her out of containment.
Cloud fought him and tossed him into the Lifestream where he got supercharged on the knowledge of all the dead people there and ended up at the North Crater in a huge chunk of materia. By the time the game started, he and Jenova had formed a symbiosis with him basically acting as her brain.
