I got gifted Descent into Avernus as a birthday present. I want to run it with my brother and some friends, but I've never run a big campaign from a book before. How should I prep it? What do I need to know about this campaign or running a big campaign in general?

    IIRC, it kind of expects you to do a lot of the legwork, I'd advise thumbing through it and filling in the gaps by just Making Shit Up.

      I've heard this. Shouldn't be too much of an issue for some parts but I'm a little worried about the players fricking the storyline up somehow.

      Looks interesting, I'll come back to it once I've finished reading through the main book. I've seen a few different suggestions for ways to "fix" it, I'll probably take some different ideas depending on what my characters do.

      Have you tried not playing dnd?

      I'm open to other systems but my play group are pretty set on DnD, for now at least.

      The first encounter is a party killer, it's insane. Basically one dude with 3 attacks and 60+ HPs (that can down in a single hit any 1st level PC) and the dude has like 4+ dudes with him and they catch the party in a room with no doors or windows and the only exist is from where that dude entered

      I had a TPK on a one shot I was in recently. I think it was because the DM was fairly new and didn't adjust enough for a 3 player party. I'm not to worried about this sort of thing because I think I'm okay with fudging rolls and figuring out solutions to stuff like that

    God I hate realms in D&D, it's always the nine hells, the abyss, or Ysgard.

    i haven't run this book in particular but here's my general advice;
    - translate what the book describes into your own personal notes of what's going to happen beat for beat
    - the book won't account for players going off the rails, so you might have to be willing to adapt the scenario off the fly, or just find ways to curve them back on the rails
    - google notes on the adventure specifically if you want more help; there's lots of blogs with ppl describing running the game and mostly complaints or adjustments they made, this may or may not be helpful for you personally
    - in general, just let the book do the work, though feel free to get creative in adjusting it when it isn't up to your standards! there's nothing more frustrating than trying to run something the book describes that you know doesn't make sense and won't make sense to the players - sometimes you'll have to intervene and act as an editor

    The entire module is basically "talk to this NPC, they tell them to go somewhere, and they talk to an npc there, who tells them to go elsewhere" occasionally broken up with them watching an NPC do something for them

        Related, how exactly would something like the Eyelander work as a magic item? A sword that increases your health and speed with every kill, while constantly whispering for you to feed it more heads?

    Nice, I'm not a huge fan of DnD but this is probably the best book out for it.
    Happy birthday too Black personbreasts!
    It's kind of a leviathan of a module compared to a lot of 5e and late 4e adventures.
