Steam is a DRM platform, and it's better than most alternatives publishers use.

Steam acts as an advertising platform as well as a storefront. Being able to get your games all in one place is such a QOL feature that people generally prefer the convenience.
No, this doesn't constitute a monopoly. Anyone can establish their own storefront and they are free to compete with Valve, but Valve didn't just get in the door early, they built the door and the house.

I sure did love purchasing and downloading Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion's official plugins through Bethesda's official website. It's not like there was ever a problem when they took the file servers down supporting their older games.

Anyone could have done it first. Do you have any idea the savings on material costs digital distribution brings?
Fricks sake, a lot of the time, buying physical on consoles doesn't actually buy you the game. It buys you a disc-based activator for the game, which then downloads the lion's share of data off of your console master's storefront.
I swear to fricking God, the only people b***hing about this are Epic shills.

There's always itch.io, but sometimes that just gives you a steam key. Unfortunately in this age of frequent updates and patches "just get the game" doesn't always work out.

                >a lot of the time, buying physical on consoles doesn't actually buy you the game

There's nothing wrong with phasing out physical games, AS LONG AS you still own the game. And you can say "hurrr you don't own digital games" but if it lacks DRM, then basically I can install it anytime I want, on as many computers as I want, without conditions or limitations. The computer doesn't even need a disk drive to do it.

                >Physical PC games died because blu ray never caught on for PC.
Yeah, because the software for playing a movie was so ungodly abysmal. I had an ASUS Blu-ray drive (itself massively overpriced) which came with some Cyberlink bloated garbage player. To play a Blu-ray anything else you had to defeat the DRM, which at that point why even bother with a drive when you can just get ISO rips or x264 encodes.

            >killed physical
Good, that shit has no place on PC. At this point we would have games on 10+ DVDs and still have to place them on the drive every time you wanted to play something.
            >every game is exclusive
Exclusive to PC, yes. It wasn't until Epic shit that store exclusives happened, but shit's already getting back to normal since publishers realized people won't buy their crap.
            >DRM shit
Discs had DRM and games already had online activation before Steam. Also even worse crap such as StarForce.

Steam made PC gaming viable again, devs were all fricking off during the early 10s, and those still around were shitting such low quality ports they might as well not have released anything.

As if there's even a meaningful amount of PCs out there with disc drives anymore. People replace forms of distributions with me ones all the time and the digital switch was going to happen with or without steam

This. I used to pirate everything but the connivence of steam means I sometimes pay if I know a game is actually going to be good.

Honestly, if they keep porting hentai VNs, I might even buy those as patching some of those is a fricking pain.
though I think I am just remembering shit from 20 years ago. I haven't had any issues patching anything in a while...

I don't think you understand the dire straits PC gaming was in between 1998 and 2012. Microsoft had all but killed the concept to try and push into the console market, abandoning their actual primary Windows installbase (comprising of like 98% of the modern world) to get money from gamers who they believed were too stupid to use PCs in the first place. They treated PC gaming as naught but an afterthought, which is why horrendous shitty systems like Games For Windows Live ever existed at all. If you wanted to play games on windows platforms, Microsoft only cared the absolute most bare minimum just to make games functional, if at all. Mac and Linux never got their foot in the door to begin with. VALVe's creation of Steam literally saved PC gaming by giving you an easy to access hub for their titles and then further branching out to popular titles from other developers to advertise and build a community around PC gaming. Epic Games can b***h about 30% cuts all they want, but it's VALVe they have to thank for where they are now.

        >killed physical
        >every game is exclusive
        >drm shit
        frick off gabe

        >killed physical
Physical games died off naturally you homosexual, the formats they were stored on became obsolete. When's the last time you booted up a game off a 5 1/2 floppy disk or god forbid a tape cassette? Never, that's when. Another thing that killed off physical was the companies themselves; they realized they could save $500 annually by making game boxes contain a fricking code for the game on xbox live, or make a collector's editions with no fricking game disc at all. VALVe didn't tell everyone to stop making physical games.

Yes. GFWL was a satanic experiment by the buttholes at microshart to see just how fricking misery they could extract from PC gamers by simply booting up games that used it. It's one of their failures that didn't have the courtesy to fizzle out, die and fade into obscurity immediately like the Zune.

Worst part was that we still had to leave with it when it died because most devs couldn't be arsed removing it

This is why some of my favorite games don't require launchers or DRM. Like Terraria, Starsector, FTL, Recettear, Environmental Station Alpha. Even r*dditcore games like Hollow Knight don't require launchers, which is nice.

And they are all purchasable on Steam, the DRM part is up to the devs. Plenty of games don't even use Steam's basic DRM.

You're saying you want more of that?
Literally the only ONLY downside of centralizing digital downloads is the incredibly unlikely event that Steam goes out of business
But guess what if you decentralized the reality is more devs and publishers actually would go out of business because it's 100 times harder to get people to use a new service or promote your shit when you're doing it independently

steam offers steam drm optionally. Reason of drm and other crap exists so widely thanks to normie business people. gamingonlinux I think interviewed some game devs and they told so that investors love drm. Normies ruining everything, including gaming as usual
