It's a turn based game, suspend your disbelief for the gameplay you homosexual.

Or hell, you don't even have to do that. Just actually have some imagination. Imagine the % is also considering the possibility of the alien just dodging. You're stood there with your gun in its face, so it might.

      Anonymous

You're the same kind of philistine that resulted in them using the moronic % based hit system, so I'll explain why so maybe you can stop suspending your brain and use it

The old games had physics based bullet trajectories. What does this mean? It means that he % to hit wasn't a % for the alien to "dodge" a bullet moving at mach 3. It was the % for the bullet, moving in a cone, to impact something alien-shaped in its arc of fire. It's literally the only way to do one of these games. Anything else results in nu-xcom homosexualry where shooting at a target literally right in front of you in auto-fire means you could miss every shot because it's based on a dice roll, not physics.

The original x-com uses actual projectiles that can collide with the environment, the hit% just determines the angle it is fired at.

I would legitimately prefer if in games like these, you simply did not miss once you're right next to an enemy, and then scale the difficulty in other ways to compensate for it. Missing when you're right next to an enemy is such a fricking infuriating feeling.

I 'member seeing the full image of this before it gets cropped. allow me to explain the hit percentage and why it is so low

    >Gatecrasher (first mission)
    >Legendary difficulty, which has aim penalties
    >Soldier is a rookie, so has the lowest aim stat
    >Weapon is an assault rifle which is medium range, point blank shots will have an aim penalty unlike a shotgun which will have a bonus the closer you are to your target
    >Sectoid has an innate defense rating, which is a further aim penalty

I can appreciate on the surface it looks silly, but given the mechanics of the game it makes sense as to why the % is so low. If soldier anon was using a shotgun it would be near to 100% considering he is a tile away from his target

    hope this helps

        Anonymous

It's not a cope, it's quite literally a breakdown of why the game mechanics work that way.

All this just to suck Firaxis dick instead of just admitting the system itself is flawed and having % hit systems is bullshit

I never said the system wasn't flawed, I'd actually prefer a projectile based system like other anons have said. I merely explained the reasoning as to why the hit chance is so low in the context of the game.

I still love the game despite that fact though. I recommend Gears Tactics if anons' haven't already played it, while it doesn't have much of an emphasis on basebuilding the tactical missions use the projectile system very well.

Makes zero sense for an assault rifle to be less effective up close, they have an effective range for a reason, being closer to your target would just make it easier to place shots, what a moronic fricking system. Glad I refunded the base game before it was too late not that long ago when it was on sale really cheap

Eh, if you try to shoot someone with a rifle at melee range, you should be able to imagine how they could make it very difficult for you

        Anonymous

realism or not, it's simply a game mechanic. much like trying to shoot a sniper rifle point blank would also have a much larger aim penalty. to argue whether or not it's realistic is irrelevant. different weapon types have different stats, much like any RPG.
