I have always wanted to run a consistent, reliable server with a community. For like 25 years of my life. This week I got gigabit fiber installed, and I have a core i7 pc just chilling.

What game should I run a server for? I want to run one for a game that has a good community with people who form bonds within their community. I don't even have to play the game myself. The most obvious thing is modded Minecraft but I would like some other suggestions. I also haven't played Minecraft in ten years so I'd be totally in the dark about it.

Good answer but I want it to be some game with world building or rpg elements etc something for people to build on and call home

That's a good idea! Are there any mods that make that game more persistent or have longer cycles?

yeah just don't do a server wipe, you'll run into wanting to run server side mods only

It’s all personal taste, but I like servers with cool hubs with player owned shops and some npc traders. I also like servers with extra items to build and get creative with. I’ve done some PVP but with how janky the game is (or was when I last played), I prefer PVE servers. I typically play servers with nice bots that allow players to save waypoints to teleport to, but I don’t mind not having waypoints as long as there are teles to important landmarks (like the aforementioned hub). Also I like having cars respawn, so you don’t have to spend hours finding cars to break down for parts once the server gets populated.

just go to church and join the choir
any in-game "community" is going to be a pale imitation that falls apart when the next FOTM comes around or a troony joins up and you have to make nice with the obvious mental void in the server that makes things less fun for everyone

If you want an actual community you'll need a game with a persistent world.

    >A GAME THAT HAS A GOOD COMMUNITY
there's only a few options then
    L4D2
    Minecraft
    One of the military sims
    Vintage Story
Probably some other shit I missed that I cannot think of
but typically any private small servers on games that been around forever

Isn't vintage story a Minecraft mod? That looked really cool when I checked it out

I think Minecraft or likewise is th idea for me. I want to offer people a home. Somewhere they can build something that can escape to. This idea is meaningful to me. I don't even play but virtual worlds were very important to me at different times of my life. And I want someone to look back one day and say man I remember those times in X server...

It can be a real place in someone's mind. At my age I am kind of shut down by health problems. So I imagine other younger people needing to escape with things like that too.

I would want to have defineable safe areas, non griefing type server etc...mostly intended to be safe but probably would want to have vast areas designated as wild too. And maybe no premium resources in safe areas. I dunno how it works but I can intuit it.

Vintage story is a completely different game it's based off a minecraft mod they were working on which was Terrafirmacraft but minecraft was holding it back
you can build stuff voxel by voxel so you can add very tiny detail which makes the builds only more impressive

Damn maybe that's a good idea I remember being impressed with the voxel building thats a very desired feature

I wonder if that makes it less viable for a server long term? Memory limitations? How is the modding and overall state of the executable at this point? I can look into it

            >modding
there is a active modding scene that is pretty decent https://mods.vintagestory.at/list/mod?&sortby=trendingpoints&sortdir=d

            >less viable for the long term
I doubt it. the game is pretty grindy just like tfc and even then the game is gonna be getting updates long as people still support the game

How are the comfy features? Does it have a lot of customization and home building stuff? Does it include character specialization or progression by default? Sorry if I'm asking too basic of questions. I'd always be interested in a server where people can specialize into jobs somewhat if they went with grinding. I feel it can build community positively for people to be able to do cool things.

                >does it have a lot of customization and home building stuff
customization wise there's not a lot to be had home building wise you can make practically anything you want but it's probably not functional as it would be if it were a real item you can make legitimate chairs and tables not using any tricks
                >character specialization
                there are classes
                >progression
it's very similar to modded minecraft in a sense
and food preservation is a thing so food does go bad and there's black smithing too and even working around leather
however the night times are terrifying and bring back something that was missing in minecraft for a very long time
some of the things I mention could be fixed by mods already or in the future by mods/updates

Games that are like that are older and aren't really actively played as much anymore. Things like Freelancer/'v-lancer' and SAMP/FiveM, come to mind, along with older Source engine and Goldsrc engined valve games and the few related mods that are still played. Freelancer has enough persistent faction/economy stuff as is and expandable with extensive mods, as do things such as SAMP with full economy/job/housing systems, but the majority of servers on both of those games shove a bunch of forced RPing on top of it that just kills all the fun.
Progression and persistence is possible even on those Valve games, I used to play bot-zombie servers on games such as Counter Strike and even "The Specialists" mod where you'd rack up XP and unlock better skills and guns, for instance.

Something old school more like Activeworlds would be perfect for this, but I doubt there'd be many that want to get into it. I used to play on a smaller private server run by a forum and it was cozy since everyone just built 'homes' in a virtual neighborhood.

Never saw actoveworlds before, looks like second life kinda. I think vr chat has this crowd now.

Vintage story or something like that is good idea because I don't want to have to agree to some corporatism lobotomy bullshit to run a server .. certain types of behavior will be banned

I used to play AW. a few years ago I hopped on AWTeen and explored for ages, looking for the shit I built as a little kid with some folks. Never found it, but it was weird and neat exploring places that haven’t been touched since 1999. I like that you can actually check out object properties and see when they were created or last modified. Although not immortalized as they’ll surely come down one day, these digital spaces are effigies from an exciting and vibrant era of the internet.
Anyway, I’d probably get AW again to play with anons if someone made a server. Would we have to manage our own object yards and stuff?

            >object properties
That was a big part of what I liked about it, rather than just placing building blocks a la Minecraft there was a sort of rudimentary 'coding' system. Making a door that opened when you clicked on it actually took a bit of knowledge and required you to type out a line of code to make it do it, not to mention give it texture or color properties. The people making the coolest stuff always had to actually know their stuff and know how to exploit the engine's capabilities, too.

Yep, I loved that about the system. You could do pretty much anything with items. Aside from there being a shitload of them to choose from (combing object yards and coming up with building ideas while browsing was always fun), you could really make them behave the way you wanted them to. I only got into basic scripting back then, but even with that it was possible to make cool stuff happen.

I bought the game in alpha and the servers back then were so good. Hardly any rules. Griefing was normal, but you accepted it. I tried joining a server a couple years ago and I could not believe how shitty the experience is. The admins are all power tripping troons from discord. You have to read millions of rules and it is the most nerfed experience imaginable.

First get familiar with Linux then do the server setup, using docker can potentially save some time or be a pain in the ass if you wanna go down that route for servers.
