I never got to play diamond only played gen 1 3 and 5 as a kid and am currently finishing soul silver which made me consider actually getting a current one for online battles and stuffs
if you want to battle pokemon online personally i recommend just using Pokemon Showdown instead. Combat in Scarlet/Violet is slow and tedious as fuck with the long ass animations on everything

pokemon showdown is an online battle simulator for every mainline pokemon video game. It's extremely accurate since they have people autistically look at decompiled code and use the same formulas. You can build any legal team by just inputting the stats. It also has a popular "random" mode where it just gives you a team of 6 random pokemon with random movesets against another player.
The game is popular enough that if you try to find a game in the current generation you'll usually get matched with another player within seconds. If you try to play something obscure like generation 3 underused you'll have a harder time though.
Give it a shot, just go to the website and hit random battles and you'll see what it is.

You can run into a Ralts right outside of the first town you go to on your way to the academy. There's one that always seems to spawn just southwest of the town.
Raltz is super common and can be found on like the second route of the game. I know because I caught one super early for my mono-Fighting type run.
If you like open world games, sure, go for it. If not, don't bother.

Just look up the version exclusives on serebii or some shit. Personally, I chose Violet because of Professor Turo (Scarlet's equivalent being Sada) and the academy being grape-themed, as opposed to orange, which represents Spain moreso than the alternative.
Don't get shield, it's pointless that game's biggest strength was the multiplayer but S/V is the current title so everyone is on that. It has better battle graphics and customization for clothing though.
As far as the difference between Scarlet/Violet the differences that actually matter are

I wouldn't worry about it, the clothing and character customization in general is fucking ugly no matter what.
If you really wanna play the newer games, get Scarlet if you like prehistoric beasts or Violet if you like robots. Personally, I dislike both Sword&Shield and ScarVio and I like better both Let's Go (it uses the mobile game Go mechanics to catch pokémon, but it aside, it is a solid RBGY reimgination) and Legends: Arceus (DPPt but Arceus, juts to fuck with you, sends you back 2 centuries for you to find him and beat his ass).
tl;dr Sword/Shield and ScarVio sucks ass, play Let's Go or Legends: Arceus instead.

there's no level scaling and you can get a feel for the gym/huge mon/team star boss's level by the mons surrounding the location. nothing stops you from challenging late progression bosses with level 10 shitmons. it's as easy or hard as you want it to be.

there is also much more freedom to how you approach the various goals in the game
you can take on gyms in any order, same with the titans and team star bases
definitely the next step over legends arceus, that locked players to a very grindy chores list to unlock the next area and had terrible world design too

The clothing options are extremely limited in this game, unfortunately. I found the winter uniform to be tolerable in Violet, at least.
You do get a Japanese outfit if you get the game's DLC expansion though.

Scarlet is fun but absolutely not $60 fun. It's the shortest and easiest game in the series, and that doesn't even account for running around autobattling Chanseys for massive exp. The boss fights are laughable garbage, like I'm battling a fucking truck with zoomers twerking on it fifty times? The open world is nice as well as the new mons. Pirate it and put it down after the main story if it doesn't hook you into the other content.

Sword and Shield have the best character customization, SV is hampered because of the school uniform.
XY and SwSh had decent trainer fashion. For some dumb reason you can't ever switch out of your fugly school uniform in SV so fashion choices are very limited (can only change hat, glasses, gloves, socks, shoes and backpack).
Still managed to make my trainer look like an off-brand Tokusatsu hero by purchasing a Lokix-themed bike helmet that matched the colors of the uniform, but that's the best I was able to do.

For me personally Sword and shield were so bad it made me drop pokemon. The wild area is kind of cool but gets dropped on you immediately and loses its luster quick. Every route is pretty much a straight line. The plot is somehow worse than any other pokemon game. Difficulty is super easy (as usual). Raids are boring. Post game questions is tedious. Anything interesting is in the DLC.

The only other thing you do in PLA is catch shit. It's a glorified catching simulator that's removed any of the strategy behind actually catching Pokemon from the main games. The world is hideous, empty, and segmented. The music is trash just like all modern Pokemon games. The characters are just "old" versions of characters from Generation 4. And before anyone says tiers are bad, look at what happens when you DON'T have tiers. VGC is one of the most static, bland metas each and every generation. Unless your favorite Pokemon is the top meta pick, playing VGC sucks major ass.

I'm playing through it for the first time right now, it's pretty good. I can confidently say if you have this, you don't need to play sw/sh as even with the performance issues it does everything it did but better.

I just got the double pack for $27 a few weeks ago. Playing Violet right now. It's decent. Not as GREAT as Arceus because Scarlet and Violet was rushed. Horrible frame rate, pop-ins, and no anti-aliasing at times. But you get use to that SHIT. Feels good passing by Pokemon murdering them by pressing R button, and pushing RZ(trigger) to trigger a battle. Story kinda repeats with these fuckers that never want to stop talking.
It's aight and has good ideas. But if you haven't played one in a while. Get Arceus for sure.
Also Pokemon Company apologized for Scarlet & Violet being shit. So there's that. They didn't even do an update to fix anything.
