I just can't get into this game. Should I stop trying? I really like the setting and the story but gameplay is boring, I know I'm supposed to take a stealthy approach but I find that to be boring and a bit tedious. I don't feel like I'm some enhanced super human and the weapons don't feel powerful enough.
Right now I'm at the part where you're supposed to take down some emp shield, this is after I rescued some hostages. I climbed some building and made my way to the rooftop but I can't get down to disabke the thing because I keep getting spotted and dying. I know this isn't the way to do it but now I'm just tired and closed the game.

Deus Ex has a few flaws like egregious, boring guns, some barren settings, and tons of cheesy acting and dialog. There are a few others that I can't go into detail about without spoiling stuff. I don't blame anyone for not being able to finish it. Do you feel like you would miss out on something special if you don't complete the game?

I might be the only person on earth who likes the gun play in Deu Sex. I like that if you don’t put points into it, the reticle takes a long time to minimize on the target.

Yeah. Accept that you're an idiot and got filtered.

it's really good. I think a lot of people don't like it the first time they play it. I remember I never really got past the first level and then didn't play it again for years and now i've played through it like 5 times or more. Similar thing happened to a friend of mine who I first borrowed the game from

try playing it on realistic difficulty if you're not already, and save really often so you don't have to redo stuff, like save almost every time you kill even one person. Setup quick save and quick load keys if they're not already, it's like F5 and F7 or something

It's not really about powerful guns, it's more about surviving and exploring, the more you explore you'll come across new areas and it will give you some skill points which you can use to upgrade your guy. I never really read the whole story, just kind of glanced over it, it seems to make it more replayable that way because each time i play it I notice new stuff

...i forgot to add, i think it's the first stage that is a bit dull compared to the rest of the game. It has big long stretches of open area so you're just walking around a lot. A lot of the other stages are more intricate and have lots of corridors multiple levels and things like that

I had the same thing happen to me. Died really quickly, couldn't really get into the gunplay and my saves were fricking broken and I didn't want to try and fix them. Then I retried a few years later (with that fan launcher to fix the broken saves) and adored it.

Sounds about right. I had to reset a lot on that part too, and I don't think I ever did it without killing everybody, although I prefer killing in this game. Just look at it as a tutorial cause you're obviously not an expert at the game's movement.

    >I know I'm supposed to take a stealthy approach
No. You don't have to take a stealthy approach at all. You can. But taking a all guns blazing approach works too. The problem is its an RPG so you need to invest the points and upgrades into the right skills if you want to be the all-guns blazing guy or the sneaky sniper guy or the pyromaniac hacker or whatever you want to be. And you're early enough in the game where you just haven't gotten enough exp. points, augs, weapon mods and upgrades yet to really start specializing. But even that early on you still don't have to take the stealth approach. It might seem like you're supposed to take the stealth approach but you really don't have to. That's kinda the whole point of Deus Ex.

    >I know I'm supposed to take a stealthy approach but I find that to be boring and a bit tedious
You're meant to play however you need to play to beat the objective. Don't think of it categorically like "I must either play stealthily or must play it like a shooter."
Explore, observe, tranq, batton, snipe, etc, hack computers/turrets/robots. If (when) you get caught, use all the ammo, gep rockets, grenades, mines, etc, you've been saving. I had a lot of fun playing a non-lethal run where I would use gas grenades and mines to stun whole rooms of guards and quickly neutralize them. It's a game that encourages retries and experimentation.
Honestly Deus Ex has such great and interesting gameplay that I suspect you just aren't understanding the game.

The PC version is a bit clunky. Just play (emulate) the PS2 one which is more streamlined in general and a better experience overall.

gonna assume this is bait but PS2 does at least cut down on a lot of areas feeling too open.

You know you can ignore everyone's advice to do stealth and just get the GEP gun and blow shit up.

I do both, and blow things up from stealth.

It's quite overrated trash like most of these "dark and mature" future WRPGs

Don't use stealth, it's boring. Don't bother aiming, get the laser pointer which makes your gun 100% accurate at any range (just don't also put on a scope or it breaks the laser pointer). Deus Ex is best played as a murder machine simulator.
