Yep its their best game gameplay wise
Shame nobody cared which ironically actually means they made the correct decision to end the series with it even if the story suffers.

They struggled so much to make it that I'm sure they were the first ones who wanted a break from the series. I don't mind as long as they keep making 2D action crack.

I only played first one and it was pretty bad. Not only was the main mechanic annoying (i just want to jump and shoot) but there also was a easy way to be invincible. I dont remember them anymore.

The crutch of prevasion is present in every game, but you're always supposed to turn it off if you want to get good and go for high scores. The gameplay styles become wilder and wilder so if you want classic Megaman it's not the series for you.

The gap between Gunvolt 2 and 3 really hurt GV3's reception. Fans had become way too attached to the lore and characters of 2 to forgive the third game for throwing everything away even though every other game in the series did the same thing to its predecessors. I didn't get into the series until GV3 was already out so I didn't have that same loyalty, and because of that GV3 was easily my favorite with iX 1 being a close second.

        >even though every other game in the series did the same thing to its predecessors
Eh, not nearly to the same extent. 2 ignored the fallout with QUILL and downplayed Sumeragi, but it still followed up on the Lumen stuff, Copen and Zonda. iX also followed up on Mytyl and Asimov. iX2 and GV3 were the worst offenders, and it's even stranger with the latter because they have a ton of fanservice with Image Pulses and even randomly bring back Carrera, Jota, Zonda and Tenjian for one boss fight.

They are score games so being invincible is irrelevant
Literally if you didnt SS rank all the levels you didnt beat the game

They are not for me, it seems. It is just a shame because i would otherwise like the designs and music etc. Inti creates some good 2d shit.

Try some of their other games if you want
Curse of the moon games if you like classic castlevania
Blaster master zero if you like well blaster master (very light metroidvania elements)
Galgun for the most lewd rail shooter (its actually a good rail shooter specially if you again play for score)

Try Mighty Gunvolt Burst, pretty much a classic Mega Man clone with an elaborate as fuck weapon customization system attached to it.

Yeah I didnt like them at first either years ago I remember I dismissed GV1 right away as garbage not worth of megaman but now that Im older and I became a score fag over time I love them.
I replay megaman games all the time, this is just the same but with extra incentives and more punishing, without having to go full on chudspeedrunner

I hated the first game enough that I didn't touch the rest of the series for a long time, but I was surprised at how much the sequels improved on it. Prevasion is still present in all of the games, but later games did a better job of balancing enemy attacks so that it doesn't feel like standing there and tanking everything is to only way to deal with them. Also in retrospect I just don't like the way Gunvolt himself plays very much but Copen and Kirin are both a blast in all of their appearances.

Not in iX2, well kinda. That one has a severally nerfed version of Prevasion that you have to go out of your way to even unlock.

As the local iX2 apologist I also think the way of giving you infinite heals at the expense of score and there being no healing items drops in the game period was objectively very good design.

You feel the impact of that the most in hard mode, if you're not playing baby bitch assist mode that is.

I admit I beat hard mode with assist on first, but eventually I got the hard mode clear, probably the hardest shit in any Inti game so far. (I still havent beat the DLC fight with blade in iX1)

They went a bit too far with that logic. The game requires you to literally git gud in order to enjoy it and that logic repels all the casual players

iX2 helps Inti realize only very few people are autistic enough to eat their shit

I think they always knew the likes of iX2 and GV3 were extremely niche, they are autistic games from autistic devs for autistic players.
Im just happy they could make so many before having to take a break and make some licensed stuff again.
All I want from them now is a shmup. Then they can go back to pacman forever if they want.

Thinking about it, the series going on (possibly permanent) hiatus isn't the worst thing in my case because I've yet to master iX2 and GV3 and to a lesser extent even iX1. That's a fuck ton of replay value right there waiting for me if I'm itching to play the series again.

Yeah that's kinda the general consensus, still a fun game

I am one of the few people that quite enjoy the first game but I understand
prevasion is probably one of my least favourite crutches/easy modes I've seen in a video game though

So was Blaster Master Zero and all of those Mega Man games they made. But to be fair people do view licensed games based on a non-vidya IP differently compared to an outsourced side game/spin-off. I will say that that Love Live game does look pretty decent, never even consumed anything from its source material either.

I'd say BMZ was a different case because IIRC they actually paid to use the IP instead of being approached to make the game.

Considering the story goes on even in the middle of boss battles, it’s their own fault for focusing so much on it and then suddenly jettisoning 90% of it out the window with a massive timeskip.
That said, I’ll never not find it funny that Kirin’s whole adventure is basically shitting on Gunvolt and proving “the power of friendship” was the actual correct answer.

Do you get to play as gunvolt in 3?, or is he doomed to be that dog all the time?

You do, you can swap to him at any moment but he is essentially easy mode, but thankfully he then has his own mode where you only play as him, and the difficulty is not in dying but in not running out of time and destroying the planet

In the main game he's a temporary God mode tag-in tied to a meter. He does get his own separate mode called D-Nizer mode that's essentially a survival marathon of the entire game in one go with some mechanics altered and added. Also once you beat the main game you unlock a passive image pulse that let's you start the stage as him, which also ties into a secret secondary SS rank you can shoot for that involves beating the entire stage without ever swapping back to Kirin, pic related is how it looks.

      Anonymous

He's kinda like your Devil Trigger. Racking up combos with Kirin will give you more time to play as GV, and when your bar is filled up past 100% you can switch to him at any time. He has infinite jumps and his Flashfield acts more like Copen's. Getting hit will reduce his meter and force you back into playing as Kirin. He's kinda like a less restrictive version of how Zero worked in Mega Man X3.

Basically everything expect the 3DS versions are perfectly fine. One thing PC and the current gen Xbox and Playstation 5 versions of Luminous Avenger iX2 and Gunvolt 3 have over the Switch one is that they offer a 120fps mode, while Switch is locked at 60fps no matter what.
