I love midtier/good PS2 action games.

I love midtier/good PS2 action games. I can't place my finger on why but particularly the japanese made ones have this sense of aesthetic, goofiness, and frankly uniqueness to them. It's back before the standard for action games kind of fall into templates where most stuff is a clone of something else. I'd like to collect and play some more so I am open to recommendations, and I don't care if it's a 6 or 7 outta 10 game, I weirdly enjoy playing them. My current collection so far is. (excluding KH, DW, SW, or AC games)

OP here. Bujingai and the PS2 Ragnar game are on my to get list.

Bujingai could be good but it isn't
The hack-n-slashing is decent, the level designs are bland at best, the story is absolutely batshit insane and barely told in-game, the requirements for the unlockables are absurd and the platforming in the final level sucks ass

Chaos Legion > Pansies Will Cry

Yeah, OP. Some of them can be straight up painful to play but they are still pretty unique and VERY memorable

PS2 passed the torch to the Wii in my opinion and after that all creativity in the industry just died out

The Bouncer is probably the best example of this. I acknowledge it's not great and kinda bad but I've grown to really enjoy it. All the face buttons on the controller have unique attacks, every so often you can pull off weirdly satisfying Matrix-esq combos together that look visually cool, three playable characters that you can pick and choose throughout the story, a huge move unlock list and stats you can upgrade. Yeah the lock on is absolute garbage and your party members get in the way most of the time (robbing you of BP) but I think this game has a lot of cool stuff going for it.

apparently chaos legion never gets re-released because its based on some book

Nah, there's a novelization but CL isn't based on any literature. It never got a rerelease because it sold poorly and got poor reviews. If you want the chaos legion experience, play DMC4 on Legendary Dark Knight mode.

6th gen was definitely the sweet spot between budgets and risk-taking. PS2 had such a massive install base that companies could afford to really experiment, and games only took about a year or two to make. There wasn't the mindset that there is now where every game needs to be a masterpiece or have a 5-year monetization roadmap to be worth greenlighting. A game could sell 100,000 copies and be deemed a success. That's why games from this era and prior are so great to revisit, and why I'm thankful there are more than can be played in one lifetime.

I tried to stream this and finish it, but i got to the part with the Grief demons and found out i needed to grind. So i did, for 2h only for the game to corrupt my save and loss all progress. Im still thinking will i finish it.

I was browsing the catalog, saw this PS2 cover of a game I LOVED. It was fun to play (as both characters) and it was EVEN BETTER to hear. The sfx and the OST rocks.
Thank you for making a thread drawing attention to Chaos Legion, OP.

Please tell me something i dont understand in the combat system, so you can either summon the guys to follow you and spam their attack or... just use your own 1 attack button to do same combo forever? What am i missing here? I think this is one of the worst games I've played - i liked Nano Breaker more than it.

        >so you can either summon the guys to follow you and spam their attack or... just use your own 1 attack button to do same combo forever? What am i missing here?
It's explicitly told and tutorialized. Like, wtf.
No, seriously, what the frick. You CANNOT play the game without the tutorial FORCING you to understand the game's combat mechanics.

        >I didn't grind, so I only could do 5 moves instead of 40.
        Your fault.

Check out Zone of the Enders 2 (first one is a bore), one of the best action games on the console for sure. Viewtiful Joe is also a classic; surprised to see it's not on your list. Also, although not Japanese, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is a fantastic beat 'em up, especially if you have a buddy to play ko-op.

VJ on PS2 is only worth it for Dante from the DMC series, otherwise everything is better on GC original. Just emulate on Dolphin if you dont have a cube or a wii
