they should make a pacman game with pinball physics

Was going to suggest they make a Pacman pinball, where you're hitting Pacman around the table, grabbing pellets.
Then I remembered they actually made that on GBA. Is that a good game?

...I mean, it was made by Bally. But tried to combine Pac-Man gameplay with pinball gameplay.

I agree with this. I guess Sonic is made to work only in 2D. Controlling pinball-like Sonic in 3D would be very complex, aiming is hard enough in 3D as is. Trademark Sonic things like spirals etc also don't work too well in 3D. That said, you can go Tony Hawk route and introduce similar things like ramps and so on. But regardless, Tony Hawk isn't meant to be a platformer.
The "geometric" look of old Sonic is also something that is not meant to be realistic. They could, of course, take a page from Mario's book and try to just create a cartoony 3D style. But Sonic already shot itself in the foot by placing him into the real world in Adventure.

        >3d games don’t have physics

I’ve said this before but monkey ball is basically just 3d sonic, or rather what 3d sonic should have been. Pinball physics platformer in 3d is basically just monkey ball, they even gave you a jump button in later games. The art styles are very similar as well.
I’ve never played it but now I wonder what super monkey ball adventure is like, I imagine it’s trying to take the monkey ball series and trying to do something more like Mario 64 or sonic adventure with it

        >Controlling piball-like Sonic in 3D would be very complex...
This is a good thing, it adds depth and nuance like how Spider-Man 2 and Ultimate Spider-Man had manual web swinging. This would be further improved by having not upper limit to Sonic's speed in the code allowing sufficiently skilled players to achieve Boost era speeds while maintaining full control.
        >Trademark Sonic things like spirals etc also don't work too well in 3D.
After having played many 3D Sonic fangames I have to disagree entirely. Round terrain and loops were exceedingly fun because you had to actively manage trajectory while the world outside the loop rolls past on either side of what you can see.

This is great because it explains it in a simple manner and shows how complex the physics really are. Alot of players don't see to realize that if you're good at the game you can literally go fast all the time and water levels are the best because you can make giant fricking leaps.

The imagery in the classic games does so much for the fricking lore too. Sonics world is actually interesting. Like who built those ruins in the background? Modern Sonic's world is just Earth basically.

they should make a pacman game with pinball physics

I guess Pac in Time is as close as there is.

Did any twittergay @ these to Morimoto yet?
He's been replying to random smucks like mad, I'd be pissed if he didn't look at this to fix nu-Sonic's 2D gameplay.

I think that there's a lot of problems that can come from just looking at this and ending it there. Sure, you figure out what SEGA themselves can't figure out, but pinball physics aren't the only thing that makes a game and you won't have something good if all you have is pinball physics and bouncing .webm's. I think games like Mania make a different mistake, being that instead of trying to evolve 2D Sonic even further and use pinball physics as a starting point, Mania just copies what already exists. Say, has anyone actually found the bosses in games like S3&K fun? Most of them are either laughably easy or really tedious. On the other hand, say what you want about Dimps games, their bosses were almost always fun in one way or another. Advance 2 and 3 in particular had some amazing fights that are really fun to master. Instead of trying to learn from that to make even better bosses, Mania just outright copies a lot of the classic bosses (which were not fun) and then makes some of them even more tedious, such as the new second phase for Red Eye or the Mean Bean Machine. This doesn't just apply to the bosses - the redesigned Hydrocity and Flying Battery are a mess.

most and foremost they need to make Sonic look vulnerable. his 90's attitude clashes with [current year] aesthetics and values

What are considered "modern" 2D Sonic games? I thought all 2D Sonic games had physics like the top half of the image

      >"modern" 2D Sonic games?
The bottom image is referring to modern sonic games in general. Modern 2D Sonic would be stuff like Generations on 3DS, The Rush games, and Sonic 4.

Sonic Rush was pretty good, though I couldn't get myself to beat it. Same story with Advance series, they all feel decent but they just lack something. You could tell they put a lot of effort into Genesis levels, something like Mushroom Hill is crazily complex. I can't say the same about later Sonics.

I beat Rush, Advance, and Pocket Adventure but I haven't played Advance 2 or 3 or Rush Adventure. The dumps games are ok but they're not soulful like the Mega Drive games are.

I'm not gonna recommend A2 due to the horrendous completeathon that's required to unlock Amy, but Advance 2's extra boss puts Doomsday Zone to shame.

Wished the Rush games had the same physics as the advance games, but turns out the programmers from Sonic Team and Dimps that did proto-boost Sonic weren't even around for Rush.

Journalists and zoomers hate that they can fail due to physics. They want every object to trigger a scripted event, and call the game janky if the moronic way they choose to interact with the object causes them inconvenience.

There is also the "they should be able to unlock everything in a single run". See Skyrim, you can be everything and do everything no matter what build you do.
