I love the depressing tone this game has.

I love the depressing tone this game has. Kiryu does 10 years in jail and when he gets out literally everybody that he loves dies; Shinji, Reina, Kazama, Nishiki, Yumi. He becomes so dejected that he doesn't care if he's dragged off to jail again. I will always love the first Yakuza more than any other.

Some of the deaths are moronic though.
Kazama dies from a fricking grenade with his body intact, Haruka is completely unharmed.
Nishiki shoots a time bomb for no reason with Kiryuu and the others on the same fricking floor as him, but of course they're unharmed because ??? even though the rest of the floor is in ruins.
You've got your fair share of moronation in later games but those deaths really stuck out to me as some of the dumbest shit in the whole franchise, doesn't help that they were for the iconic characters too so every time they're mentioned you remember how stupid their deaths were.

This happens frustratingly often in this series

Kiryu can't kill no one, unless they are some grunts in a helicopter or car.

The plot of this game is absolutely moronic. It could have been resolved at any time with one phone call
    >*ring ring*
    >Hello, Kiryu? This is Kazama. Yumi had a baby while you were in prison and the dad is a corrupt politician working with the Tojo Clan. Yumi and I stole a bunch of his money and it's hidden in a bar at the top of the Millennium Tower. Go meet Yumi there and she'll tell you what to do next.

to be fair, cell phones were kind of new to a guy who was in prison since 1995(he's even confused when Date gives him one), so i assume Kazama didn't even know Kiryu had a phone

He didn't need to. He told Kiryu to go to Stardust. Presumably they have a landline there, or Kazuki has a cell phone. He also knew Shinji would be going there to meet Kiryu, and Shinji has one.

        >Fight Ryuji at the end and he's framed like the final boss after all the build up.
        >Big korean guy that was supposed to be dead shows up and reveals that he was actually the bad guy all along.
        >Fight him. Then some other guy shows up and reveals that he was just puppeting the big korean guy and reveals that he was actually the real bad guy.
        >He shoots people and whatever, then Ryuji gets up with a gun.
        >Ryuji then starts walking at him, magdumping him while the other guy backs up and magdumps back.
        >They're both literally walking toward/away from each other from about 5 feet away, dumping their clips into each other until Ryuji's endurance makes him the last one standing.

The final battle with Ryuji is peak "scenes women will never understand." It even has a woman right there in the scene, not understanding it.

I think the best part about it is that Kiryu is the first one to tell Sayama to frick off because he wants to settle this. This isn't something Kiryu would usually do, and this actually really cement this as a "scenes women will never understand" moment.

Why didn't Kazama just call Kiryu at Stardust from the funeral to explain what was going on? Even if he didn't have a phone, Shinji could have brought his cell phone.
Who were the guys killed in the bar where Kiryu finds Haruka, and who killed them? Why?
Why didn't Kazama offer to help pay for Nishiki's sister's surgery?
Why is everyone at the bar after Kazama dies? Yumi is there to blow up the money, but why now? She could have just done that right away, what was she waiting for? JIngu and Nishiki both show up there too, despite never having learned that the money was there

I don't think it would be fair to say Nishiki jobbed when its to Kiryu. He gave him a really good fight and was supposedly an equal to him, but Kiryu somehow always beats the odds.
In Kiwami 2, some homeless guy walks past Kiryu and sticks a little knife into him and it took him out. Kiryu in fight mode is when he's more or less unbeatable.

It's only depressing in concept. In execution, most of these characters didn't get enough screentime to truly matter. Y1 would be very different if it was written after 0 and I don't mean that as in a "they need to pander to 0 fans" way but rather that the events would have more weight and thought put behind them. Ultimately 1 is what it is because it was their first attempt so they tried to cram minigames and episodic shit into the main plot as much as possible. Also Jingu is fricking moronic.

I think pic related shows why the Haruka stuff and generally the Y1 writing is weaker than some of the later episodes. It feels empty.

Well the original games weren't meant to glorify the life, it was meant to show the godfather-esque transition from 80s with its pretensions towards honor to the full cutthroat money above all attitude of the 90s and 00s.

It'll be some new threat to the Great Wall of Muscle that drags Ichiban in because he's friends with Seonhee, Zhao, and Han. Sure, the Seiryu are gone, but the Goemijul and Liumang are going to be taking over that power vacuum. 8 also established that Hanawa's report essentially told the Daidoji that every single one of Ichiban and his friends are useful idiots and can be manipulated (In much kinder words since he didn't mean anything bad by it) so they are clearly going to come up as a major part of the story.

Another thing they have yet to address is the Triad situation since they're still wanting to take over parts of Japan and at least 3 established that Yokohama is where they do all their stuff out of. The Jingweon are also constantly causing issues for the Goemijul and it's not like they've stopped trying to grab Kamurocho so I expect a future game to deal with them too. They would have to bring Yuta back for the Triad stuff though. Kiryu being a side character also feels like a given, I can't see Ichiban not going to Okinawa at some point for advice or help in some way that's not Kiryu fighting specifically.
