I made it to level 3.
keep at it. don't give in to using the code
I 1cc the arcade contra it's really short, shouldnt take long
It's not short, it just makes the last 3 levels of the NES game into a single one.
>It's not short
What? Contra is like 9 mins long, compared to Hard Corps which is over 30min
...about 10 of which is literally that one crawling boss that's immortal 70% of the fight.
Man, Hard Corps was fun, but a good game it wasn't.
I tried playing using the spread shot and got really far. If you keep the spread shot from the waterfall level its makes level 4 a lot easier. I've been trying to finish retro games instead of playing a bit and moving on.
Good for you. You'll feel better over time and develop a much better understanding and appreciation of games. It's also worthwhile to pick random games and just play them through.
i can't make it to level three
Level 2 is one of the toughest levels in the game, keep at it.
the 2 unicorns at the end keep rushing at me, there's literally nothing i can do
There's your problem. Scroll the first one onto the screen first and then kill it before you walk closer to the gate to trigger the second one. Fighting both at the same time is a death wish.
Not really. Each consecutive level is proportionally harder, and the second loop is harder still, especially the last two levels. I'm talking about the arcade original, though. Never really beat the NES port.
>used the 30 lives code
>used the level select code
Yeah you could say I'm pretty good at beating retro games
You did not beat the game.
I like the Laser, am I fucked up?
>I like the Laser, am I fucked up?
No, you have good taste, unlike the drooling spreadtards
its because SS is incredibly ineffective vs the final levels homing-urchin pukin' maws and facehuggers IIRC - also the ability to cancel wasted shots can sometimes come in handy if the runner dudes spawn behind you
play two player and grief each other on the waterfall stage by forcing the screen to scroll up and killing the player at the bottom of the screen
that's the authentic way to play contra
lol that's how my cousin and I used to play back in the day. Good times
Based. Always got into fights with my friends this way. It always started by one mistake and snowballed into full on trying to kill your partner.
I got Nintendo banned at my cousin's house by doing this... I played with my younger cousins at family get together and did it a couple times... then the younger kids started doing it and getting in fights
>played it for the first time last year
>over the course of around a week was able to consistently get to level 7, but always ended up either choking there or on the final level
>eventually just says "screw it" and use the konami code
>of course it's a joke at that point and I'm able to beat the final level easily
>go to sleep
>wake up the next morning and instantly get straight out of bed without thinking and turn the game back on
>beat it twice in a row without the konami code just to prove to myself that I could
good ass game
Thoughts on the laser?
It's incredibly easy. Just get the spread gun and keep moving.
The second game on NES is a lot harder, but still very fair.
Can confirm. I can beat Contra without dying more than once or twice. Super C is a game I have yet to beat
I don't know what you're talking about, Super C is a lot easier than the first game. I love the game, it's my favourite, but it's a lot easier. Maybe you think that way because you played with the konami code and there being 20 less lives in 2 you got less far.
For instance the first game has a ton of traps like
>spike wall appears in your face
>floor crumbles under you, due to not sticking to the floor and being in mid air falling it's hard to even jump out of it
>that fucking truck which is basically impossible in SP if you have just the basic weapon
2 has none of that shit really
Maybe I just played the first one more, but back in the day I could clear Contra 1 without dying easily and Super C I only ever beat once in 2-player with a cousin's boyfriend who was already good at it.
Learn to lay on the ground, especially in the faux 3D levels. That's it.
Update today, I can get to Level 3 every time now but it's still damn hard, haven't beaten it yet. This is a great game though.
Personally I find if you pre-fire in upward diagonals and scroll the screen slowly when you find the turrets to only awaken one at a time it should be very manageable.
Did you know that the localized version doesn't have animated backgrounds?
Localized version is overall better than the Japanese version.
made it to the first boss
